Aug 14, 2010I am new to Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 few days back. The problem I am having is not able to connect to internet. Mine is direct cable connection using CAT5 cable terminted to my ethernet card. and I connect to the net using a dial-up connection. I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. The only thing I could figure out is that I have to do some configuration on pppoe (am i right?)Are there any commands I have to enter or anything like we used to do in windows?

I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.
I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)

Apr 20, 2010I want to configure Internet connection in my linux os but don't know how to do it. In Windows XP the method is quite simple but in linux I know know what to do about, It has been very challenging for me to do it but don't knw how ot do it.This file I have to type at run "RASPPPOE.inf" to get list of available Internet providers.
In windows I do it in this way-
1.First go to My network places ->View network connection->Local area network->Properties->Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)->Install->protocol->Microsoft TCP/IP version 6(select)->Have disk->(then browse to get RASPPPOE.inf file from PPPOE folder)->click OK->select PPP over Ethernet protocol->Click OK->>continue anyway(two times if asked)-> Apply->OK.
2.Then got to run ->Type raspppoe (Enter)->one window will open->select the LAN card (where internet cable is connected)->Click on Query available services->Select Internet provider name and->Click on Create dial up connection.-> Then dial up will be created on Desktop where I enter my username and password to start internet.

Sep 22, 2010When I boot up my machine (running CentOS 5.5), I have no internet connection. ifconig doesn't show that eth0 is present. Going into my Network Gui from the administration tools, it says that eth0 is not active. I can't activate it from the GUI.But...If I sudo dhclient -d eth0, the process runs for a little bit, and all of the sudden my internet connection is there.
There must be some sort setting that I need to change to avoid doing this everytime I start the machine. Its odd, because I have an identical machine right next to it that doesn't have this problem.

Feb 28, 2011I have an HP laptop with a wireless connection to my BT router. This works fine,but when I switch to ubuntu I cannot get on line it simply does not recognize the the connection.A friend suggested disabling the internal card and using a usb dongle this works fine on windows but again is not recognized by ubuntu.I do have an Ethernet cable connection which is fine in the office but no good when elsewhere in the house. Any one with experience of this problem?

From what I can tell, this is supported by this version of linux. I have the adaptor enabled, my image settings as bridged, and the wimax enabled in the removable devices (connected). Dec 24, 2010I would like some help setting up using a wireless connection. I can connect using wired connection, and I have no trouble browsing. I have a strong wireless connection as well; however, when I try to browse I get a server not found error. I did download the necessary drivers. Before that, I didn't have a wireless connection. I was able to connect on this pc before the install, and all other devices still connect using wireless. I have a linksys router.
The one thing that stands out at me is the ip address that it says the wireless connection is using. It says it is 10.42.43.1
I feel like that might be problematic because I'm pretty sure my router only accepts connections with values that are between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.200.

Aug 26, 2010I am unable to connect to the Internet using a wired connection. I was able to use the wired network yesterday. But I had problems with the flash player, so had to reinstall Ubuntu again. I am able to connect to Internet using wireless connection. But I need to connect to the wired connection. I am using Ubuntu 10. In my IPv4 settings, it is automatically set to DHCP, using which, I was earlier able to connect. But now it doesn't seem to be happening.
But there are other entries on the syslog that were recent.

Feb 4, 2010I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

Jul 27, 2010I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
