General :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Network - Broadcom BCM4311

Aug 28, 2010

I was told by an experienced Linux user/IT professional that older Broadcom wireless cards had embedded code preventing access through non-Windows OS's. I was told that there were drivers that were basically "hacks" for skirting this issue. I've tried two different drivers and neither seems to be doing the trick. My current driver is the "Broadcom STA wireless driver".

Symptoms

Recognizes my network and others
Says it's connected
Won't load any web pages
Frequently asks for authentication
I've authenticated using my network password and my router's security key

Here's what the terminal says about my wireless card:

05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Device [1468:0422]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: wl
Kernel modules: wl, ssb

General :: Kubuntu 11.04 And Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless Not Working?

May 18, 2011

Yet another Linux newbie with wireless problems I'm afraid. I saw some postings that appear very similar but I don't have any Linux experience and don'h to make uncontrolled changes to the environment without expert advice. Background: I have an old laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000) with Vista installed and a troubled history (overheating motherboard failure), so I put it on the shelf and replaced it with a new Windows 7 laptop (Dell Studio 1555). But I have been intrigued by the Ubuntu reviews and thought I would dig out the old laptop and install Kubuntu 11.04 (replacing the 2 Vista partitions with a single Kubuntu partition).

Kubuntu installation was easy and I am impressed by the Kubuntu interface, but I soon noticed that it was not detecting my wireless router, which works fine for everything else (Dell, Sony Bravia TV and also an internet radio). The wired connection is okay (using it now) so I guessed the problem was Kubuntu notognising the Broadcom BCM4311.The network interface tool shows the wired connection but the Wireless tab is greyed out.I also installed Wicd Network Manager but that just confirmed what I knew.I noticed other threads have asked for the lspci and lsusb details so here they are:

Fedora Networking :: Wireless With Inspiron 1501 Bcm4311 Rev01 / Trying To Connect To A Hidden Wireless Network?

May 5, 2009

I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: BCM4311 Unable To Make Connection - But Can See Network?

Apr 23, 2011

I think I've read every post here about the Broadcom and connection.I thought I tried everything.Turns out (read Chapter35.Using NetworkManager) using Connection Manager (K Network Manager) you can not use, what I wanted to use, 'all users, use connection' or said another way, the wifi would be activated and connected Before the user 'logs in'. Well, as I said, it turns out that if you are using gnome, this will work with NetMgr, but NOT in KDE. If you want to use 'system connect' then you have to use 'traditional' if in YaST2. Oh well, at least 'i'm' connected.... (i'm the only user, so not a big deal right now, but would like to get it working...)

CentOS 5 Hardware :: WLAN - No Luck (BCM4311 / BCM 2050) - Network Or NetworkManager Sees Any Of Wireless Networks

Sep 8, 2009

After reading and trying tons of tutorials and several OS reinstalls, I'm stuck trying to load wireless on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Before you say search forums! I hurry to tell I did. No solution seems to work. WLAN chipset - Broadcom's BCM4311 / BCM 2050. 1st scenario - native CentOS 5.3 drivers Although CentOS recognize WLAN card and displays it's name correctly, neither network or NetworkManager sees any of wireless networks.

2nd scenario - Broadcom's drivers Most know Broadcom has released Linux drivers. I had some more luck with them than in 1st scenario although problems occur. After successfully compiling Kernel module, wireless networks are discovered and can be successfully connected but no pages load. It seems like DNS is not resolving at all and page loading timeouts instantly. Tested on TKIP-encrypted network.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Networks And Unable To Configure Network

Jul 27, 2010

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.

Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network

However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.

Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 Unable To Connect To Wireless Network?

Jul 16, 2011

I installed 11.04 ubuntu 2 days ago. I have had thousands issues trying to connect to my wireless network router dlink di524. My wireless card is a dlink dwl g122 ver c1. I can't connect to the network no matter what configuration I try.

- first time i tried to connect i had static ip settled on my router so I tried to configure Network manager from GUI. I couldn't connect; it kept trying to connect forever. so I completely removed from terminal NM (using guides on internet) e installed wicd: same problem. Tried to configure manually network/interfaces file. Didn't work. Reset router and set dhcp . Tried everything again first with NM and then wicd. Didn't solve. Reinstalled ubuntu, fearing I messed up with some configuration files and reset again router. No solution

Tried pinguy os, zorin e linux mint . Nope Borrowed a network card from a friend after reading dlink dwl g122 could have some issues with linux. Tried this realtek card : same problems as above. Finally I tried again after the fifth reinstallation of ubuntu. Both NM and wicd keep saying wrong password. Changed different password. Password is fine of course (i'm using it now with win) So I Reset router password to none. Now it says: "acquiring ip address" and keep saying that forever. So i tried the last attempt: I tried to connect from zorin5 live to the same wifi network.. Ok so I happily reinstalled everything again (zorin5). first access after installation: same problems as above

Now I'm using win7 on the same wifi network, router, and same card (cards) and everything works fine at first attempt.

Ubuntu :: WPA/WP2 Wireless Connection - Unable To Connect To My Network

Oct 5, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv5. My laptop has a Broadcom 4312 wireless adapter. The driver for the adapter was installed by Ubuntu as a proprietary driver. The wireless light is on and I can see the available networks, but I am unable to connect to my network. The correct authorization is set(WPA/WPA2) and I have entered the passphrase correctly.

I am able to connect to the wireless network successfully from my Windows login(that is how I confirmed that the passphrase is accurate). The network shows that it is trying to connect, but the wireless authentication dialog(asking for the passphrase) keeps popping up. Incidentally, the same thing happened when I tried openSuSe and Fedora on a spare laptop. The windows systems can connect, but not the Linux systems.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Network At Work

Jul 14, 2011

Currently I'm having trouble connecting to the guest wireless network at my work. I've read through a couple threads that seem similar to my problem. I tried going through the terminal window and following the instructions that was offered to others. I'm just wondering if my hardware is different, if I need drivers, if my permissions aren't correct.

1. I recently received a Sony Vaio laptop model # VGN-FE770G from a friend, and I'm enjoying running Ubuntu.

2. I followed another thread that suggested to change some lines in /etc/network/interfaces, but I don't have permission to edit this file. I don't really have the need to set up multiple users on my laptop, so how can I change my permissions to root? (Or is it a good idea even?) Should I log in as root?

3. How can I set my laptop up to be flexible with network selections, using hardware: (built-in camera and microphone for example), and useful applications?

I ran "ifconfig -a" and this is what I got.
