I've installed the Ubuntu 10.04 Server onto a PPC G4 Mac just for the experience of setting up a server. During the installation process Ubuntu couldn't auto-configure my DHCP Network. I'm using the airport card on a wireless network. How can I manually configure the network once Ubuntu is installed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor strange reasons I was stuck without an Internet connection for about 2 hours. I couldn't establish a connection, even local network only via DHCP. This was on Natty. After 30mins passed, I rebooted to Maverick only to get the same results. With nothing else to do, one hour after, I booted into Windows XP to play Dragon Wars 2. Lo and behold! I had Internet connection. At first I thought it was a technical problem with my ISP. So I rebooted hurriedly to Natty and after several minutes of trying to coax Network Manager for a damn fre*kin* connection it still couldn't.
Back again to XP, I couldn't believe that I wasn't experiencing some kind of on/off signal from my ISP. It wasn't just a coincidence that I could connect on XP and not on Natty. The connection was fine! And I've reason to believe for the past 2 hours, my ISP wasn't the culprit. .. this time it was on my end.Now - on Natty - I manually configured the connection (Instead of DHCP) to be greeted with the familiar Connection Established prompt from notify-OSD.
I have installed openSUSE KDE 11.3 on my notebook. Everything looks great, but I can't connect on internet. It looks like dhcp don't work. Wireless works fine, only auto eth0 don't work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

Problem: I run WPA2 Personal encryption on all my wireless devices. At work we use Cisco WAPs and I can connect flawlessly, simply by entering the password. At home I use Apple's Timemachine, which is basically an Airport Extreme A/B/G/N router.
I go to Network Manager and choose "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network". I enter in the SSID of my home wireless, choose WPA2 Personal, and enter in the password. After ~1 minute Network Manager spits back a window requesting the WEP key.... But I'm not running WEP. This is extremely frustrating. I delete the network and try again... same behaviour. My assumption is that this may be isolated to Airport Extreme network devices but I'd really love to find a fix. Just FYI: I have a MacBook Pro and a system running Vista that connect without a hitch.
my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.
I am a web designer and don't know anything about servers. My server service provider use Linux environment and sometime it would be much easier for me to have a local server to test my websites. So I have install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 to one of my computer. Half way installation, the system tell me something like couldn't configure the DHCP, I have checked that my router has enabled DHCP servers (D-Link 615). After installation and logon, I use sudo pppoeconf command and try to set the network.
But it said something like no PPPoE access. I know I am very dull, and maybe get ban from this forum because I have not read the instruction, it will be great if you can point me to the right page. All I want to do is have something like a web space + MySQL and support PHP to work with.

Currently, the interface seems to be set up correctly in the YaST network settings thing, labeled as wlan0, and it doesn't have the 'Not Connected' indicator after it.
EDIT: iwconfig doesn't list wlan0; it just lists eth0 and lo0, saying neither have a wireless extension
I am just trying to get SSH working between 2 local machines on OpensSuse 11.4 boxes. I have the SSHD daemon running, the firewall is configured to allow SSH to pass, and I am using SSH's password authentication. However, my machines cannot see each other. Anytime I try to SSH, I get "Could not resolve hostname<hostname>: Name or service not known."
Of course, that leads me to believe I need an entry in my /etc/hosts file. However, I use DHCP, and therefore have a dynamic IP address. Therefore, my hosts names will only be good until the next IP renewal. How in the world do I configure SSH with a DHCP assigned address?

Previously work normal. Started from some time ago, after reboot the server, the network card cannot be automatically started. Need to go into YAST's wired network which will activate the network card. Having checked 'chkconfig', the 'network' is on. Where can I check if they is any error log about auto enabling the network card?

I tried wifi but couldn't figure out how (I'm a n00b) but now I have ethernet and can't figure out how to make it work. So my question is, how do I connect to my Ethernet with ubuntu server, I could if I had graphical, but I can't get that until I have Internet. I didn't configure network during install, so how do I do it now?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu server on an older 05-06 Desktop (IBM) and when I get to the Configuration part it stops right around 95% and the prompt reads that configuration failed do to the fact that my unit is running a non DHCP Network or my machine is two slow. Now it does only have 1 gig in it right now so I'm thinking that might be the problem also. But if it is a DHCP issue how can I install UBUNTU or is it even possible?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a WET54g bridge that I am trying to get connected to a wireless network that only allows DHCP. The idea behind it is that I would like to connect the Cat6 out of the bridge to a switch allowing multiple wired computers to connect to the wireless network. The bridge will easily connect to the network once I put the WEP key in, however, there is a kink after that. When I connect the Cat6 to my computer and request an IP for that computer, it self assigns. This tells me that it is not talking to the wireless network through the bridge.
I can not find which IP address the bridge was assigned so that I can talk to it. The sub net is 255.255.240.0 which leaves quite a few possibilities. I know that the bridge is, however talking to the wireless network because the light is steady on the front of it which indicates just that. One other thing to stack on is that I know that there is a "splash page" which comes up when any computer connects. You click on the agreement and then you are allowed onto the network. How can I get my computer to talk through the bridge to the wireless network?

Wireless card worked out of the box and i could detect wireless network and connect to it. But i have a problem that, my wireless connection is not able to get IP address from the DHCP server. Please help me out what can i do to get this working. I am using WEP security and authentication is open system.
I have windows 7 beta installed on the same machine and on that wireless network works fine so i am sure that there is no problem with the wirless network. I am using DIR-300 router from D-LINK. I tried to see packet log on wireshark and there i see that there is no reply to the DHCP discover message. Actually i don't see any RX packets at all. Which is not normal as there is traffic on the network.
Does anyone know if you switch networks Where you have your servers hosted on a Non-DHCP Network, and you switch your IP addresses, then do you have to switch change/assign your new gateway address? I'm not sure if its manually assigned? How do you do it? Also what about nameserver resolving?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get and old PCI wireless card to work on Ubuntu 10.04. The card is a Zonet 1602. It was not recognized automatically.
I have been able to get it to work using ndiswrapper except that when the computer is started it does not automatically connect to the network. I can click on the network icon and select my network from a list and it will connect, including properly authenticating the network key.
I have worked through a lot of information on the web but much of it seems to apply to earlier versions of Ubuntu and some if it does not match what I'm seeing in 10.04.
There is a built in Ethernet controller on the mother board but I have disabled it in the BIOS.
I'm trying to configure my network card using the b43 driver. I'm running 10.04.2 on the kernel version 2.6.35-25-generic-pae.
Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home wireless network using the b43 driver without a problem. The only issue is that it doesn't automatically connect. I have to use the following command in order to get it to work:

After typing my password, I wait for 10 seconds and am automatically connected. My question is, how do I configure my system to do this for me permanently (or at least automatically) so I don't have to type it every time I log on?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe have several new DELL STUDIO-XPS machines pre-packaged with Win7 onto which we intend to load 10.3 the 2.6.22.5-31-default kernel as a dual boot.
The first test machine however is showing reluctance to reveal its NIC under SuSE. The card in question is a Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet with driver version 12.4.0.3 under Windows.
The error message I recieve under SuSE is "Unable to configure network card because kernel device is not present".
ifconfig confirms this showing only the loopback device.
The tg3.ko driver seems to be OK (although I am not sure how to interogate this file for its vesion?). It is listed under /sbin/lsmod and I have attempted a rmmod followed by an insmod but thsi seems to have no effect.
Talk on the net suggests Windows will not 'let go' of the card on a dual boot machine but this seems unlikely and I have attempted the various power down options without success.
I am using Redhat enterprize linux and using ethernet card Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. I tried to configure my network card. But unable to activate it as message appears "No such device found" I am using Dell inspiron laptop.

I recently purchased a Dell Vostro v130 which came with Win 7 pre-loaded. I've been using it for a few weeks with no problems, but now I'd like to install ubuntu studio. I made it through the the partitioning part but now I'm getting a networking error: "Network autoconfiguration failed. Your network is probably not using the DHCP protocol. Alternatively, the DHCP server may be slow or some network hardware is not working properly."
I've been using the wireless connection in win 7 without any problem so I don't know why I'm having a problem now.
I'm attempting to run a DHCP server on my home network to enable PXE booting for ethernet clients, but I'm having quite a few issues getting it all up and running. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong, but I keep encountering errors in syslog as follows:

Networking is not exactly my strong suit, but I would like to get this up and running if at all possible.
I'm using a D-Link Xtreme N PCI express wireless adapter (DWA-556). It shows up in the network manager.
However it does not get an ip address from the DHCP server. Below is what I get in the messages log:
I am trying to configure a wireless connection from YAST under the Network Settings tool.It doesn't seem to do anything. My USB wifi device is detected in YAST > Hardware and I am using the module it says Hardware is using. It doesn't seem to save the module under YAST> Network Settings> Network Card Setup. Is this tool broken or useless? It seems setting up WiFi should be easier than this. YAST should work shouldn't it?
