I am having some problems installing Fedora 15 64-bit. I use the install DVD. I have an AMD Phenom and a NVidia 8600GTS. When I install using the normal method, my screen freezes somewhere in the settings screen for choosing the computer name. If I use the basic video driver for installing I have no problem. However after everything is installed, and Fedora starts, Gnome says that it failed to start and some features are not available.
I found some information at [URL] that I tried. However after installing kmod-nvidia and rebooting I no longer see any graphical display. A lot of text is on the screen without any error, but no x-windows appears. What can I do to install Fedora correctly and have a good working system? Is the 32-bit version easier to get it working? How can you recover from a system that does not start? What I could do to recover from it.

It's sort of a pain to find any support on this because GIMP comes pre-installed. For whatever reason it didn't install properly on install, and being lazy and a newbie, didn't bother to research the initial install's error it produced upon attempting to execute it, and instead found another package and installed it.For whatever reason it's still not loading. If it was any other application I'd probably just search for an alternative, but seeing as this is GIMP there isn't really...(there's Krita but GNOME's my favourite WM and I dislike using KDE applications[I'm quite superficial], and I'd probably be using an image editor a lot so yeah).

This is an error I got from VLC Media Player:
Streaming / Transcoding failed:
It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder:
MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution. This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue.
It said not to contact VideoLAN, but instead the Distro so...here I am. Was there a file I should download in order to fix this? If there is one, where do I place it or run it to stop this error?

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

Newbie here. I'm thinking about going from Ubuntu to Slackware and I just saw on Wikipedia that there is a number of projects that maintain GNOME binaries especially for Slack. So that made me wonder, why is that needed? What if I download a bare version of Slack and then build the standard GNOME version from source? Would that produce problems?

Recently I've read an interview at Distrowatch, where a topic was the compatibility of Slackware and Zenwalk packages. My understanding was that now they should both be used in both systems.
As Slackware doesn't feature a complete GNOME distribution, my curiosity was about the ability of Zenwalk's GNOME packages play a role there. If so, the second question is how intrusive those packages are considering Slackware 13.1.

I'm happy to announce Linvo 2009.1 rc6. It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It can open all types of file formats. It's a LiveCD, which means that you can test it without installing and after this optionally install it - it has a nice easy graphical installer.
It's the first Slackware-based LiveCD distribution with GNOME by default. It includes NetworkManager and initng in place of sysvinit. It also features accessibility tools. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. However, after this, the speed of the application is limited by the speed of your connection, of course. Check out the "Applications" section on the website.
Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. It also contains src2pkg and sbopkg in case you want to compile something from source or existing SlackBuild Depfinder is included to find dependencies of packages. Click here for a guide on how to use those. I also managed to put development tools in there, like GCC, G++, svn, cvs, so on... This is a release candidate, and despite that it's OK for using. It has a bit more things to do until the release (like language selection on the boot menu), but I decided that it's important to put it here for testing.

I'm interested in seeing what others are doing w.r.t. fonts in a standard Slack install. The 2 main apps I use are Firefox and Thunderbird and both look fairly poor out of the box. Previously I've used a combination of gtk-qt-engine and gnome-appearance-properties ( with a gsb install ) but this doesn't always do the 'right thing'.

You might be asking why would I want to this? I will tell you why. My wife. She has grown up using Windows. The jump from Windows XP to 7 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for her. I just had to show her where things changed to for about 10-20 minutes and that was that.
I did a trial run with Ubuntu for about a month using Gnome and not her cup of tea. So now I did a search on the Internet and came up with a Gnome solution here is the link:
http://aminesoft.wordpress.com/2009/...ike-windows-7/
And a KDE link:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show...content=104232
But both websites are oriented towards Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I am just wondering if this will work with Slackware???
My wife likes a speedy system almost as much as I do. She also like the Search field when you click on the Start menu in Windows 7, the taskbar at the bottom, the big red X in right hand corner of the windows.
I just hope I can go this route and change it to look like Windows 7. I will be very happy and so will my wife of course.

I have configured the remote installation of Fedora 13 with kickstart with nfs installation method. All work ok until I boot the Fedora 13 client system.
Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.
First, I thought that I had an error on my NFS configuration but I was wrong. I opened tty with ALT+F4 on the Fedora 13 client and I sew this error:

I attempted to install from source. Following the instructions on the gnome-do website verbatim, I received several errors. Gnome-do was installed (in Gnome menu), but would not run. Realizing I was over my head and was out of time, I ran "sudo make uninstall", restarted my machine for good measure, then installed gnome-do from my software manager. It still won't run. Running gnome-do from terminal gives the same error as when I attempted to install from source:
Unhandled Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Could not read add-in description

I used purged gnome-do and plugins, restarted, and reinstalled, but am experiencing the same problem.

I just installed opensuse 11.4 64 bit. Compiz and everything was working fine on my ati card (mobility 2600) with the default radeon drivers. I added the gnome 3 stable repo, updated fine. But when I rebooted I get booted into the fallback with no 3d effects and it says "gnome 3 failed to load" What gives? The drivers were working fine with full acceleration. I know gnome 3 works on this card, I tested it on the fedora live cd just fine.

System: Ubuntu 9.10, upgraded from previous versions
Architecture:64 bit
Filesystem:EXT4
DE:Gnome
Occurance of the problem: After using GParted to move unallocated space to a ntfs-filesystem. Yep. I did it again. No oops this time, for I have no clue why this error appeared and why I cant get to my desktop. No recent updates that couldve borked the system.Lately I have had to work quite a bit with some Windows-only programs, and I found myself out of harddisk space pretty soon, as for the last year or two, I worked almost exclusively with Ubuntu and only had a minimally sized partition set up for Windows. I needed room. No problem, I thought, I will start up GParted, move some of the unallocated space to the NTFS partition and be done with it. I have performed tasks like that before, so no problem should occur.
After rebooting I got to the grub menu. All options were there. Looks nice. Except for the fact that Windows did not want to start, some MSDK (sorry, did not write down the name) file or whatever was missing. (I heard this is a Vista problem and the file connected to the error does not even exist on any XP system). Worse than XP not starting was the error message I got from my login screen.
"The configuration defaults for gnome-power-manager have not been loaded. Please contact your administrator."
So I did. I talked to myself and had to admit to the user that I did not have a solution at hand. User upset, administrator too. (They are no longer talking to each other.) Login is accepted, but after that nothing. Just a black screen with a mouse-pointer that can be moved around. Nada mas. Before getting to the login screen, there was something else that drew my attention, but again, I did not know what it meant. The error-message:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 is udevd [527]: NAME: "%k" is superfluous and breaks kernel supplied names, please move it from /etc/udev/rules.d/51-hso-udev.rules:124

SuperGrub. It allowed me to boot, but thats it. No further steps taken, if only because SuperGrub does not support the EXT4 filesystem (yet?).I have heard people were able to get to their desktop after receiving this error by using a root account they had previously created. I dont have one, so that would not work. So, I did the three finger salute, stopped the gdm from the terminal, moved gconfd to somewhere else, hoping a new file would be created and the problem would be solved with that, but no. Restarted gdm, it worked but the problem remained.
Ok. Perhaps a reinstall of the GDM might work, I thought. Well, it might, but the problem is I have no internet connection and the usual way I connect my laptop is through phone-tethering. Not having a desktop will not allow me to make a connection. So, sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-power-manager did not work as an active connection is required. Also I dont know if that is going to solve the problem. So now I am in the dark. I have booted up a live CD, mounted my HD partition in order to check my /root/.Xauthority, but I could not even find the file.
I refuse to believe there is a serious problem with my Ubuntu install. As far as I can see, there is a problem with some config-files but the system itself looks OK. Reinstalling is preferably not an option, as I love my install and have been working with it for a long time now, with lots of user data on it as well. Also, I have not seperated /HOME, which makes a reinstall a bit of a drag. I am certain there is an easy fix somewhere, someway, but I would need some advice from someone more knowledgable than I am. The only thing I could think of is to find a way to reinstall gnome-power-manager without an active connection. I can download the .deb file with some other device than my laptop but I would not know how to add that to /etc/apt/sources.list. Also, I kind of doubt that the problem lies within a faulty power-manager.
