I just installed opensuse 11.4 64 bit. Compiz and everything was working fine on my ati card (mobility 2600) with the default radeon drivers. I added the gnome 3 stable repo, updated fine. But when I rebooted I get booted into the fallback with no 3d effects and it says "gnome 3 failed to load" What gives? The drivers were working fine with full acceleration. I know gnome 3 works on this card, I tested it on the fedora live cd just fine.

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

OAFIID Gnone panel crashesSince I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, my computer spends 5+ minutes starting up. Of that, 2 minutes or so are spent getting to log-in, which is longer than Ubuntu 10.04 took. After I log-in, it takes up to 5 minutes just to load up.I am not entirely sure what is causing this. Almost every time I start up, all the panel applets crash (e.g. "The panel encountered a problem while loadingOAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet").
The panels that reliably fail to load are: the clock, indicator applet, indicator applet session, and fast_user_switch, though the latter is not an applet I have added to the panel.Deleting and reloading the applets, changing their location etc. does not change the problem.I know this problem has been much commented on in the forums. I have tried all the following solutions:
-- Resizing the panel
--sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo aptitude reinstall gnome-applets

I've done a quick google search and didn't really find anything that I understood. I DID find a reference to the bug on launchpad, but supposedly it was fixed as of version 2.1 and I'm running the latest version I could find which I believe is 2.9 so I'm a bit lost.
Any help would be great, if you need more info, just tell me how to get it and i shall do so as I really am missing gnomenu. If it makes any difference, I'm on ubuntu 11.04 64bit running in classic mode

After a fresh install of Lucid I found this error on my screen "the panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_NetstatusApplet" do you want to delete it?" I kept pressing no and having a completely worthless system. The programs were all opening in the left corner with no controls to move or close them.

I'm having a weird issue with Lucid. On startup the power/user switcher applet doesn't load correctly, instead I see the me menu applet twice. I don't think I'm explaining this very well, so here's a screenshot.

After killing gnome-panel, this corrects itself.

Unfortunately GNOME 3 failed to start properly and started in the fallback mode. This most likely means your system (graphics hardware or driver) is not capable of delivering the full GNOME 3 experience.

I have an error icon in my Gnome panel that will not go away. It appeared after running an apt-get command (explained below). Everything is working fine, but I cannot get the error icon to go away. Surely there must be some file somewhere storing the state that is making this reappear. The icon occurred after the following: I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Yesterday, I decided to add the Medibuntu repository to my apt sources based on the instructions at [URL] -- i.e., I ran the command:
sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list [URL] && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
In the terminal window, I saw the following error message amidst the other output:
W: GPG error: [URL] lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783
However, everything appears to have worked fine. The Medibuntu repository has been added to my sources, the keyring has been added, and I am able to install packages from the repository using apt-get without any errors.
Nonetheless, an error icon appeared in the Gnome panel after running the above command-line, and it will not go away. If I move the mouse pointer over it, the following text displays:
An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Unknown Error: '<type 'exceptions.SystemError'>' (E:Opening configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic - ifstream::ifstream (13:Permission denied))' This usually mean that your installed packages have unmet dependencies
The file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic it mentions is present and is readable (at least as root). Running Package Manager works fine with no errors. I've tried running
sudo apt-get check
and it runs fine without any errors. Likewise,
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get upgrade
run fine with no errors. But the error icon remains.
If I log out of Gnome and log back in, the error icon returns. If I reboot, the error icon returns as soon as I log back into a Gnome session. How to I get rid of this?

I installed a suse 11.3 on my acer laptop and it worked just fine for two days.I was able to use internet as well though wi-fi driver i still had to figure out. This morning when i started it, it gave me an error like this:- Failed to load grub Error 18 now from what i understand is the solution is to downsize the harddisk partition used by the linux root to somewhat 10gb.Mine is about 40gb.
So i thought why not re-install the os again. But even after changing the bios setting to boot from cd-rom and putting in the suse dvd still its not booting from dvd and continously giving this error Error 18:Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS and then it comes to a command prompt like this grub>

I recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. I am able to log into and use LXDE desktop, but at the GUI login when I try to log into gnome-shell or Open Box, the log in fails. With Open Box I just get a black screen. When trying gnome, I get error "Failed to load session "gnome." When trying KDE Plasma I get music and then black screen on which I can control the mouse cursor.
Attached is my hardware info and xsession error file. I am using a Samsung SyncMaster 175v monitor. Version 10.10 worked well, with not issues, and was fully updated. I followed the upgrade directions, I believe.

I need the steps to troubleshoot this:
If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.

I recently brought home an old Compaq server from work. I was told that it works fine. When I brought it home, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 server from a cd. While it's trying to install, I get the message "Installation step failed. An installation step failed. You can try to run the following item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Load installer components from CD." I turned off the computer and tried it again several times. Each time the same message appears.

after I installed graphical ATI drivers for my Ubuntu distribution version 10.10 running on a Acer laptop, it told me to restart and since then I cannot boot GNOME. Whenever I start the laptop, I just get a command prompt with username and password. I can browse through my files using changedir and other commands. After logging in I typed 'startx' and it gave me alot of errors:
Quote:
Fatal server error: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI : 0@0 : 20 : 4) found
(EE) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI : 0@0 : 20 : 4) found
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
[code]....
So I really regret downloading these drivers, is there any way to roll back to the old Ubuntu supported video drivers?
