General :: Special Versions Of GNOME Maintained For Slackware / Why Is So?

Apr 22, 2011

Newbie here. I'm thinking about going from Ubuntu to Slackware and I just saw on Wikipedia that there is a number of projects that maintain GNOME binaries especially for Slack. So that made me wonder, why is that needed? What if I download a bare version of Slack and then build the standard GNOME version from source? Would that produce problems?

Slackware :: Is Slocate (secure Locate) Still Maintained?

Feb 13, 2011

Google searches for "secure locate Kevin Lindsay" and "secure locate source" do not show any signs of ongoing maintenance, but do bring up a few security advisories related, afaict, to memory corruption. If it's a Google problem, sorry in advance to the maintainer.

General :: Special Characters Don't Appear In GNOME

Jan 21, 2011

I am trying to make specifically Norwegian characters appear properly. Right now they look like this:

[URL]

Characters like turns the same. This is a font that I downloaded called PT Sans. The letters I want are included, they just don't appear right in the GNOME environment, it seems. They work just fine in other applications, such as OOo Writer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

Aug 2, 2010

I was looking for what rehash command does and found this:

The rehash command re-computes the internal hash table of the contents of directories listed in the path environmental variable to account for new commands added.

I never knew about any internal hash tables. Why and how are they maintained?

Slackware :: Make Special Keys Run Commands Without X?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm installing Slackware 13.1 on a Samsung N150 netbook and am stuck trying to make the special keys do their normal functions when using a virtual terminal, that is not under X. Under X + Xfce it can be done via Menu->Settings->Keyboard->"Application Shortcuts".

In essence the question is how to make a special key (example Fn+Up to increase screen brightness) run a command in the background.

Changed title and text to make clear that the command should not run in a virtual terminal but while the display is being used for a virtual terminal, that is after Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example.

Slackware :: 12.2 Deletes All /dev/fd?u* Floppy Special Files On Boot?

Nov 15, 2009

Slackware 12.2 has the unkind habit of deleting all the /dev/fd?u* floppy special files upon boot-up. I have to make another directory (I use /floppy) to contain these files so I don't have to keep copying them from an earlier distribution (12.1) Now, for example, to format a 1743 kilobyte floppy, I do fdformat /floppy/fd0u1743 mformat a:If I copy these special files to /dev (where they belong) then some part of Slackware Linux 12.2 deletes the special files when I power down and power up the machine.Slackware 12.1 and earlier leave floppy special files severely alone upon shutdown/startup.I cannot seem to "grep" a reference to /dev/fd anywhere in /etc/rc.d or its subdirectories. Why is Slackware 12.2 deleting them?

Slackware :: Using Old Versions Of Slackware?

Nov 21, 2010

I am using 2 distibutions of Slackware. On first partition it is Slackware 13.1, second partition Slackware 12.1. Why?? I have old ati mobility radeon X1350. This card is not supported in newer versions of kernel and Xorg-server that have Slack13.1. I am using only ati open drivers with MESA 2.7.9 with experimental 3D support. But this is not so good for gaming, sometimes I play RTCW multiplayer and OpenArena.

I installed Slackware 12.1 with kernel 2.6.24.5 on second partition. I use fglrx 8.5 and I have full 3D rendering now. My graphic card need this or older kernel to full 3D support. Every software and packages that I was using in Slack 13.1, I am using in Slack 12.1 now in older versions. My question:

What do you experienced slackers think about it? I have now outdated system with everything what I need, but only differences are older versions of packages and 3D rendering card.

Ubuntu :: Difference Between LTS Versions And Other Versions?

Jun 30, 2011

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.

So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS

Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.

Slackware :: Use Of Zenwalk GNOME Packages As GNOME Distribution

Jul 26, 2010

Recently I've read an interview at Distrowatch, where a topic was the compatibility of Slackware and Zenwalk packages. My understanding was that now they should both be used in both systems.

As Slackware doesn't feature a complete GNOME distribution, my curiosity was about the ability of Zenwalk's GNOME packages play a role there. If so, the second question is how intrusive those packages are considering Slackware 13.1.

Slackware :: Linvo 2009.1rc6 - Slackware-based LiveCD With GNOME

Jan 6, 2010

I'm happy to announce Linvo 2009.1 rc6. It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It can open all types of file formats. It's a LiveCD, which means that you can test it without installing and after this optionally install it - it has a nice easy graphical installer.

It's the first Slackware-based LiveCD distribution with GNOME by default. It includes NetworkManager and initng in place of sysvinit. It also features accessibility tools. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. However, after this, the speed of the application is limited by the speed of your connection, of course. Check out the "Applications" section on the website.

Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. It also contains src2pkg and sbopkg in case you want to compile something from source or existing SlackBuild Depfinder is included to find dependencies of packages. Click here for a guide on how to use those. I also managed to put development tools in there, like GCC, G++, svn, cvs, so on... This is a release candidate, and despite that it's OK for using. It has a bit more things to do until the release (like language selection on the boot menu), but I decided that it's important to put it here for testing.

General :: Where Are Special Key Mapping Saved

Aug 12, 2010

I've found several how-to's, but the "problem" is that all the ones I've found up to now involve using xmodmap. I'm not radically opposed to that, but, with debian, for some reason, I don't need it. I don't have a Xmodmap file, and yet, the special keys have their "names", instead of NoSymbol (on xev). Anyone knows where the settings are, whenever one does not use xmodmap? To make things weirder I've tried to create a Xmodmap to use with arch from debian, but it get the names all wrong, for some reason. (I used xmodmap -pke > .Xmodmap). I guess that whatever debian does, it has nothing to do with xmodmap then.

But I think it may not be possible. Besides not using xmodmap, on debian I have the correct keyboard layout set without having any command (well, at least not on my openbox startup script... it could be somewhere along all those "deeper" startup scripts, on /etc/rc.#/, I guess... I'm going to check there now), while on arch I have a "setxkbmap" on my openbox startup script.

General :: KDE - File Names With Special Characters ?

Feb 20, 2010

I am running gentoo openbox(rox file manager and desktop) I installed Digikam and Amarok. But I have problems with files which include special character in their names(such as ,, ,ğ... ) The files are shown with strange and weird characters in the file dialogs of Digikam and Amarok.

I don't have this problem in other applications. I can create files with special character included. I think some settings do not agree with KDE4. How can I solve this problem? Does anyone have an idea? I also installed KDE systemsettings program but could not find a relevant config option for character encoding.
