I use d-link to share network with my other PCs.PC is connected to D-link via Ethernet and I can't understand what should be written in /etc/network/interfaces to have Internet.I tried to add option "auto eth0" to /etc/network/interfaces butshould I alsough include? Or how can I reconfigure it manually.
Currently I use openSUSE but the 6 months release cycle is starting to bug me a bit so yesterday I have tried Debian Testing daily snapshot created on 20-11-2010, using KDE desktop (I am a KDE fun). All goes well until I try to make a pppoe using KDE's module network manager.
I created the pppoe connection with user and password but I got 2 problems: - After I have created the connection it doesn't appear along with "Auto eth0" above the button manage connections. - The pppoe connection is not established (both password and username are correct).
I know that I could use pppoeconf or ceni for that matter, but I am new to debian as I where new to openSUSE 4 years ago and I am still learning, so please don't tell to use them I just want to know if there's a way to use network manager from kde 4.4.5 to establish a pppoe connection (you could name it the GUI way, no worries I like using the console as well). Under openSUSE I have a program called qinternet that helps me with pppoe connection is there something similar under Debian?
I started with a Pentium4 system with a FX5500 AGP card and now have a i3 with integrated Intel video (Auburndale). The new motherboard is ASUS P7H55-M PRO. The monitor is a Acer AL1916 (LCD) with only VGA input. I have been using the nVidia oprietary drivers installed the "Debian way" (Cf using a Debian stable stock kernel.I first renamed xorg.conf so X would start without one. Once gdm starts, the monitor says the input is not supported. So I tried reusing the old xorg.conf file, changing the "nvidia" to "i810". X then fails to start and shows an error of no screens found.Everything is fine in text mode; only X is not working.I have to get this fixed very quick or I might not get to use Linux at work anymore.
I've replaced the Motherboard on a working Debian Lenny system but GDM does t come up: the grey screen merely displays with a wristwatch in the middle.I can find no messages. Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and Xorg -configure don't help.
I have a fresh install of Jessie, and am having issues with debconf.
I have been trying to change to mdm from the default lightdm display manager. I have downloaded and installed mdm (apt-get install mdm) but when I run dpkg-reconfigure mdm nothing happens. As I understand it, I should get a menu that lets me choose which display manager to use.
I also installed lirc so I could get my IR remote working again, but when I run dpkg-reconfigure lirc nothing happens. I am supposed to get a menu with various options to choose from.
I have tried dpkg-reconfigure debconf and this gives me the menu with different options to choose, like it should when trying dpkg-reconfigure lirc or dpkg-reconfigure mdm. I tried using dpkg-reconfigure debconf to choose different settings, such as gnome, or editor, but they don't work either.
I recently attempted to change my ip with terminal using "ifconfig etho <input address>" but failed to annotate the previous address. I restarted the network after appending the network document at "/etc/network/interfaces" and restarted the network "/etc/init.d/network restart". Checking through I found the the IP address was what I changed it too yet the problem was attempting to revert it back.Going through a cycle of editing the network document and restart the network has ended in failure and I am curious if there is a way to reset the configuration for eth0 without reinstallation.
Don't know what I did but while moving the cursor around fast, suddenly my desktop reverted to the default openSUSE 11.3 background (circles) from a custom jpeg image and all the icons disappeared. Rebooting did not solve the situation. Never had this happen before in over twenty years. Is there a way to restore the previous desktop or do I need to reconfigure everything?
i have tried to reconfigure evolution to send and receive e-mail,i am using verizon,i must have put in the wrong information, everything gets stuck in the out box, after trying many times i can not get back to the welcome to evolution to where i can reconfigure it back to where i can get it to work to send and receive and not stuckn the out box, getting a little frustrated,
I've found that I need to use pppoeconf, but it doesn't work. I have default Debian kernel with PPPOE module. After looking for the modem it gives me the following message:"Sorry, I scanned 1 interface, but the Access Concentrator of you provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also another pppoe process which controls the modem."pppoeconf detected the interface successfully (eth0, I have only one interface), but doesn't work. It does, however, work with my router connecting without any issues.
I just decided to try out Debian live cd having been on Ubuntu 8.04 for so long. My internet connection is through router and modem/dsl pppoe. Problem... pppoe package isn't in synaptec so I cant use pppoeconf. HoW to get on internet please? Tried both static and DHCP ip.
I am using a broadband internet connection. Currently I am using pon and poff commands to start and stop the internet connection respectively. But for these commands to execute I should switch to the root user. I want even a normal user to be able to start or stop the connection. How can I do this?
I have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).
So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).
I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
I finally managed to install pppoe and pppoeconf. When I type command 'pppoeconf' , it invokes some window and I put username, passwd etc. But my net connection won't start. I have posting the output of various commands related to networking.ifconfig
Previously i use Ubuntu 10.10 , After installing BackTrack to hard disk, how do i configure a PPPoE / ADSL connection with username and password. i don't know where to find any config. application. In ubuntu i have network connections on taskbar so that i configured easily, but in Backtrack how to do that ?
PPPOE connection Timed Out-i have downloaded the rp-pppoe utility and installed for PPPOE connection. As per the instruction given with the utility i followed that .i have given pppoe-setup and given all the parameters required like service name , username ,password, firewall as none ,dsn as server an all the option .finally i got the message as congratulation you have successfully setup the pppoe connection.you can use pppoe-start and pppoe-status.
I have trouble connecting to internet when connecting using pppoe-start, even though it says it's connected and the pppoe interface is there. I test the connection by sending a ping to a known IP address and got "destination unreachable".
how to setup PPPoE on ubuntu or even fedora which requires only username and pass to login.
as for pppoeconf.. it gives me error some modconf not found.
I currently have 10.04 installed and would like to update it after getting the internet working .
I won't be able to connect to internet in ubuntu so don't tell me methods which will require me to access internet IN ubuntu. If some downloading from windows is required it's good.
I have a Compaq Presario CQ61, instaled Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 on it.
It works great except the PPPoE connection in Ubuntu, when i dial in Windows my download speed reach up to 91 Mb, rebooted in Ubuntu, downloaded same file from the same server with a speed of maximum 3 Mb, cheked in Windows again 80 - 90 Mb constant. I can't figure what slow's the internet connection in Ubuntu.
(NO iptables configured, NO HTB, CBQ ...etc configured) .
EDIT: I don't have any modem or router. I am using PPPoE directly from my PC. I didn't mentioned that I instaled Ubuntu two times but didn't figured out what was causing the problem, so I instaled Fedora 12 (64), this works fine and the speed reached 85 Mb. I instaled latest Ubuntu 10.4 on the same Laptop, the problem is not solved, the speed reaches up to 3Mb, when in Windows or Fedora reaches up to 95 Mb (yesterday).
I am trying to configure a computer to make it as DHCP server.Well, my current connection is PPPOE.So, I should assign one interface to connect as PPPOE, and the other will be broadcast DHCP server. What configuration shall I apply to the dhcp.conf file?
I was able to connect to internet using PPPoE until I configured Samba network and set the machine as its server; does this two related? Is it possible there's a conflicting configuration, say DNS server config for example?
i want to create the wireless pppoe wireless network but it just dont show any help for pppoe connections.i tried with network manager but it works only for eth0 (not for ethl)

I have a samba server I had manually configured pam to use winbind in 8.04 I'm pretty sure that when I did that I broke pam. I had not choice at the time but in 10.04 there is a winbind pam module. How can I rewrite the pam configuration to use the default pam winbind configuration?
When I put sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg into terminal then hit the return key it asks for my password which I put in, it then seems to do nothing it doesn't open the xserver page to make any changes.
