I have trouble connecting to internet when connecting using pppoe-start, even though it says it's connected and the pppoe interface is there. I test the connection by sending a ping to a known IP address and got "destination unreachable".

Previously i use Ubuntu 10.10 , After installing BackTrack to hard disk, how do i configure a PPPoE / ADSL connection with username and password. i don't know where to find any config. application. In ubuntu i have network connections on taskbar so that i configured easily, but in Backtrack how to do that ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a netbook and a wifi router (TP-Link), I connected the ADSL modem to the router, then the router (output) to the ehternet in the desktop with U 9.10. I configured the router to dial the modem.
The router dials the modem, the modem connects, and I have wifi at home, the netbook (still with W7) connects to the wifi network. So far so good.
BUT now the Ubuntu in the desktop doesn't connect. No netwok. If I run sudo pppoeconf, after a scanning process it says that probably there's another pppoe proccess that is controlling the modem. I guess it tries to dial.
Later, when I install U 10.10 in the notebook I'll have to struggle with the wifi network..

i'm using kernel-generic-smp-2.6.33.4, i even rebuilt the rp-pppoe package but it's the same thing. same behaviour was also in the previous release using kernel 2.6.29.6 due the broken forcedeth in that version of kernel, but on ArchLinux using the same version of kernel works normally.
I have problem to access the Internet, with Ubuntu 10.04. In Windows I access the Internet in this way: Create a PPPoE Connection (with username and password), after this connect to a Wireless Network called WebSTAR (I have Wireless modem in my family PC), and connect to PPPoE Connection. After these steps the Internet works fine. .But I have same problems with Ubuntu. First I see the Network named "WebSTAR" but I can`t connect to it. And I try many times to join the Internet with "sudo pppoeconf" command in Terminal, but didn't work.

The provider here sometimes goes through some problems and the connection may disappear and return at any unexpected moment. In Windows there is a icon on system tray that dysplays such information and I know when the connection is gone. It also allows me to try to reconnect manually. Where do I find these information on Opensuse here do I manage to reconnect. In Windows it was also possible to set the connection to re-dial automatically when it was out. It was very useful if it failed in the middle of a download, the system reconnected and the download manager retried until download resumed. Is there some way to adjust opensuse to reconnect automatically when connection fails or some software that does it? Furthermore, is there a good download manager that works in Opensuse that pause, accelerates downloads and retries when connection fails?
I need to implement at my sister this kind of connection: She is connected on Local area network that has about 50-80 pc's, but for internet access she must start an pppoe connection. For now when she wants to use lan she must put her local address (ps: they dont have dhcp), for pppoe she uses dhcp. Problem is that on that way she can't access lan and internet at the same time. She must disconnect from lan and then start pppoe connection and vice versa. I'm intrested if it is possible to have lan access at the same time as internet access. some kind of tunel through lan up to isp. I was googling little and so PPPoE tunneling. Is it that what I need here?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have a routed and a PPPoE type internet connection, recently i tried a thing in terminal with the pppoeconf option since the network manager has problems with connectiong to the internet with a pppoe DLS connection, or anyway in my case it does not work. Ok i did the pppoeconf thing i inserted my pass and my user and left the program to do its thing, ok it all worked fine but then i restarted my system and suddenly the network manager did not want to recognize my network it hat as options some weird ipupdown options for connection and when i tried the pppoeconf thing again it did not work. what could i do to reactivate at least one way my connection, if i understood correctly the terminal type connecting and the network manager are two different things. now i am using my router and it should connect but the network manager still does not see the connection.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been dist hunting ever since I bought my new desktop in Sept 08. some live cd or even install cd work or don't-- but I have learned some workarounds i.e. pci=nomsi at boot for example. Problem I have now is I have wired DSL (modem only) and need to manually connect. I can install tkpppoe running ./go-gui command but everytime I do I can send out packets but not ever recieving (correct me if I have this backwards). in other words activity is showing upload but not on downloads and can't ping either ip or domain or browse. been trying to find out what's going on I think it may have to do with the eth0 should not pull up an IP at boot which seems to be 192.147.x.x or like that according to ifconfig -a Otherwords, when I covert my modem to a router every is fine but manually connecting with PPPoE software that's another story. I would go with the router mode but the Westell model I currently have sucks with it's firewall. I usually go with a software based firewall. call me old skool lol. Need some advice.. I miss my journey with linux Even though I have Vista Premium solid as a rock--- I miss the special customizations only nix can provide and better security.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
i'm using opensuse 11.3 and can't connect to the internet, my eth0 interface (which would be my modem i suppose) is found and when i "activate" it with ifup eth0, it gets stuck waiting for data (says so in ifstatus). If i try with knetworkmanager it is also stuck and doesn't connect to eth0. If i try to make it connect at boot, it doesn't work either.
I think the problem might be that in windows xp my modem has a "limited connection" but i can connect with my pppoe password anyway, but opensuse won't let me connect until it finds eth0 is working correctly which it never will because of how the internet company configures the modems i think. I don't know with which command i could "force" the pppoe connection even without a good connection to the modem, maybe that would work. But on the other hand, with other distros i can connect just fine so i don't know really.
i configured my laptop (running UBUNTU 10.04 LTS) for my broadband (bridge mode). I did that using PPPOE CONF command. Everything goes ok but only prob is i have to run this command and configure my net every time i restart my system. What i need is it should connect to the net whenever i use the PON DSL-PROVIDER and must turn off by using POFF..

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter being fed up of all the problems I have had with Windows, I have just installed Mandrake Linux and everything seems OK apart from the fact that I can't connect to the internet. I presume it's because I have not got the relevant driver (or have not configured it if it's there) My machine was previously running Windows and all the disks I have are for Windows.
I have looked in my manual and it says I have a K8NBP GRAND (I think that's the motherboard, you'll see that I don't really know a lot!!) The manual also says Gigabit Ethernet LAN : NVIDIA Gigabit MAC + VITESSE Gigabit PHY - Supports 10/100/1000Base- T Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet. When I was running Windows I just had a network cable running out of the back of the PC connected to one of the LAN sockets on my router. I am currently having to use my wife's laptop (which runs on yet another OS but at least it connects to the internet or I'd be really stuffed).
I suddenly cannot connect to the internet from work and at home with my laptop. Both ethernet and wireless won't work. I still get an IP address, and can also ping it, but cannot ping other addresses. What befuddles me that it happened today at work and at home, that it worked fine at both places before, and that I just connected to the internet yesterday at an airport. I have not installed any new programs, nor have we changed our internet provider etc. My girlfriend's laptop (Windows -- gnnn) still can connect to the internet without problems.
View 8 Replies View Relateda friend of mine recently wiped my computer (windows XP) and installed Linux. The internet provider is Comcast cable. I have not ever had a problem connecting w/ windows XP but now I can't connect to the internet.I've spent hours on the phone w/ IT at Comcast and they tell me that I have connection to their modem and I also have a valid IP number. They seem to think that it could be something as simple as a setting, somewhere in the program and advised me to contact Linux for a solution. I am anxious to use Linux as my friends rave about the performance and all the 'bells & whistles' so the speak.
I have since, reinstalled windows XP (because I need to use the internet a lot, but can't get connected to the internet with it either.Again Comcast shows that I have connection to their modem and I have a valid IP address, but still can not connect to the internet. They seem to think that since all other variables remain constant except for the installing of Linux that the problem lies somewhere in that install.
I have just finished installing Fedora 10 on my machine and I have it connected to the internet via ethernet cable. The problem is it wont connect at all for some reason.
I click on the green Activate button in network configuration to see if it does anything but I keep getting this AVC denial error. I don't even understand what the problem is:

The only other thing I messed around with is the DNS server; I put two DNS servers in those boxes, and I got those from the people in charge so it shouldn't be wrong.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen using Fedora in VMWare, sometimes I can connect to the internet and sometimes I cannot. I do nothing differently on different days. I restart the machine and / or shut the machine down at the end of the day. When the machine starts back up the next time, I might have an internet connection or I might not have an internet connection. The 2 computer symbol that appears in the top will also sometimes be displayed. If I have that icon and click on it, it will display connections I can use including a sys one. I have a bridged connection chosen in VMWare also. Furthermore, when I click on the System -> Administration -> Network Device Control, 'eth0' is listed and it is listed as 'active'.
Yesterday I could ping out to a specific ip address on our network ( 192.168.1.xxx ). Now, I cannot ping that same ip address. I receive an error 'Destination host unreachable'.
How can I make it so that I have the internet connection every time I start up the machine? What do I need to check as far as the internet connection goes and the network connection?
