I just decided to try out Debian live cd having been on Ubuntu 8.04 for so long. My internet connection is through router and modem/dsl pppoe. Problem... pppoe package isn't in synaptec so I cant use pppoeconf. HoW to get on internet please? Tried both static and DHCP ip.

After looking for the modem it gives me the following message:"Sorry, I scanned 1 interface, but the Access Concentrator of you provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also another pppoe process which controls the modem."pppoeconf detected the interface successfully (eth0, I have only one interface), but doesn't work. It does, however, work with my router connecting without any issues.

View 1 Replies View RelatedCurrently I use openSUSE but the 6 months release cycle is starting to bug me a bit so yesterday I have tried Debian Testing daily snapshot created on 20-11-2010, using KDE desktop (I am a KDE fun). All goes well until I try to make a pppoe using KDE's module network manager.
I created the pppoe connection with user and password but I got 2 problems:
- After I have created the connection it doesn't appear along with "Auto eth0" above the button manage connections.
- The pppoe connection is not established (both password and username are correct).
I know that I could use pppoeconf or ceni for that matter, but I am new to debian as I where new to openSUSE 4 years ago and I am still learning, so please don't tell to use them I just want to know if there's a way to use network manager from kde 4.4.5 to establish a pppoe connection (you could name it the GUI way, no worries I like using the console as well). Under openSUSE I have a program called qinternet that helps me with pppoe connection is there something similar under Debian?
I have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).
So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).

I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files�47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.
Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.
Is there stability advantages to installing the mint-meta-debian package from the repo below??? I have read that LMDE is safer than running Testing because there is less chance for breakage with LMDE. Less risky overall. Is that true?

I recently tossed Ubuntu for Debian Unstable for my personal machines and I'm having trouble building Emerald into a package. I've already configured and installed the package (using the usual ./configure, make, make install) but I wanted to make a deb for future use (for myself and for others). However every time I try to run dpkg-build I get the following error message.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a netbook and a wifi router (TP-Link), I connected the ADSL modem to the router, then the router (output) to the ehternet in the desktop with U 9.10. I configured the router to dial the modem.
The router dials the modem, the modem connects, and I have wifi at home, the netbook (still with W7) connects to the wifi network. So far so good.
BUT now the Ubuntu in the desktop doesn't connect. No netwok. If I run sudo pppoeconf, after a scanning process it says that probably there's another pppoe proccess that is controlling the modem. I guess it tries to dial.
Later, when I install U 10.10 in the notebook I'll have to struggle with the wifi network..

I installed openSUSE a couple of weeks ago but didn't use it until 2 days ago. It was the latest version when I installed it.To my surprise there wasn't a gcc or pppoe installed. Or at least there wasn't a command line begging with ppp.I tried to install them both with rpms. I think I got them both, just they don't work very well. In particular rp-pppoe doesn't work at all. It says that there's no modem on eth0, which is very true there's only a eth cable. gcc seems to work but I'm not sure I installed all the dependencies.I can't use yast because of lack of internet. I have to reboot to windows and download rpms.Can you give me a work around? At least for the pppoe then it might fix itself. Can I have some EXACT links to rpms or another solution?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe Ubuntu version I want to install is Server 10.04 LTS 64-bit. My new machine does not have a CD-ROM drive, so I had to install Ubuntu via USB flash drive.
After following Ubuntu official website instruction and use "Universal USB Installer" to "burn" iso images into USB drive, I could boot Ubuntu via USB smoothly.
However, after going to the installation menu, hitting ESC key twice to enter the command prompt screen, then typing "install modules=ppp-udeb" and going through the installation process, the installer just didn't try to probe my pppoe connection and there is nowhere to set pppoe config. Also my NIC cable had already connected to the pppoe device.
i configured net and LAN setting for it but i cannot make them work together using pppoe....how do i dailup both together and work properly..!!
in windows xp i use to untick use default gateway to make them work simultaneuosly but there is no option like that in ubuntu..!!
I got a new ISP, and it uses PPPoE. Let's say it's over eth1. After I connect there is a ppp0 -or similar interface. My question is what kind of firewall policy should I use on eth1? (block all, allow ppoe passthrough only or should I just do nothing?)

My adsl modem is in bridge mode . I can connect to internet via pppoe . pppoeconf recognise the pppoe in eth0 and setup a connection and i can use it .. Now , the Problem :
How can I setup a pppoe connection using pppoeconf so that it uses wireless ? I set the wireless mode to bridge in modem settings . But , after that , the access point stopped appearing in "aps in range" in network manager and i can't connect to it . pppoeconf also doesn't recognise wlan0 as a valid pppoe link . but dat is normal since i don't think it can check if wlan0 is pppoe without wlan0 being connected to the modem's wireless network .
SO , HOW CAN I CONNECT TO INTERNET WITH MODEM IN BRIDGE MODE AND CONNECTING VIA THE WIRELESS INTERFACE OF THE MODEM ??

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn a Fedora 11 machine, I configured ppp0 on eth0 and ppp1 on eth1, each one is connected to a modem, I also defined ppp0 as the default gateway.. Should I do anything else to load balance the 2 connections or will ppp1 take some of the load by default? Should I add any other routing rules? If yes then please tell me what should I add, keeping in mind that for each pppoe connection both the pppoe address and the remote address are not static so I actually needed some scripting to change the default gateway each time the remote pppoe address changes.
