I have been trying to change to mdm from the default lightdm display manager. I have downloaded and installed mdm (apt-get install mdm) but when I run dpkg-reconfigure mdm nothing happens. As I understand it, I should get a menu that lets me choose which display manager to use.
I also installed lirc so I could get my IR remote working again, but when I run dpkg-reconfigure lirc nothing happens. I am supposed to get a menu with various options to choose from.
I have tried dpkg-reconfigure debconf and this gives me the menu with different options to choose, like it should when trying dpkg-reconfigure lirc or dpkg-reconfigure mdm. I tried using dpkg-reconfigure debconf to choose different settings, such as gnome, or editor, but they don't work either.
I need a video driver for SIS M760GX for an ACER Aspire 5000 laptop.
Everywhere I've looked it says to run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Supposedly, this is supposed to open a window where I can change settings. However it does nothing and just returns me to the prompt.
I did the following command while I had my partition mounted and was not able to restart until i pulled the power. sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic. Everything seems to be working okay now but before I start getting into 10.04 i wanna make sure i just didn't screw anything up.

I want to install gcc on my Pyramid linux which is debian based. I downloaded gcc.deb. When I want to install this file, it gives me "dpkg command not found" error! I also get this error when I want to install other .deb files using dpkg command " dpkg -i finename.deb. I did some research and it seams that I should install package on my system, but package file is .deb file and I can't install .deb file! What should I do to solve the problem??? Should I install any thing on my system to install .deb files??

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started with a Pentium4 system with a FX5500 AGP card and now have a i3 with integrated Intel video (Auburndale). The new motherboard is ASUS P7H55-M PRO. The monitor is a Acer AL1916 (LCD) with only VGA input. I have been using the nVidia oprietary drivers installed the "Debian way" (Cf using a Debian stable stock kernel.I first renamed xorg.conf so X would start without one. Once gdm starts, the monitor says the input is not supported. So I tried reusing the old xorg.conf file, changing the "nvidia" to "i810". X then fails to start and shows an error of no screens found.Everything is fine in text mode; only X is not working.I have to get this fixed very quick or I might not get to use Linux at work anymore.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
After I got the OS up and running (v9.10), I was prompted to download and install some updates. The download is complete, but when I try to install the updates, I receive the following message. What should I do?

I installed the software Ubuntu Tweak yesterday and I was satisfied of how it worked. today, surfing the internet I was hoping to find a solution to a couple of problems that I have: the computer sometimes get stuck when opening videos or photos - I can't see streaming TV. when the internet browser was asking me to install plug-in in order to show the videos I tried to install them but errors occurred.
so I followed the instruction in [URL] (many of these things didn't work and the terminal was showing error messages...) now after rebooting I have got the unity 2D I think (which is fine as I can't notice great differences) but I can't install the updates from Ubuntu Tweak the error message is: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. how can I fix it and get my video codecds?

I'm trying to build Qt using dpkg-buildpackage. Briefly, the problem I have consists in that using dpkg-buildpackage I get a linking error, that I don't get if I run configure and make directly, without the mediation of dpkg-buildpackage. One of the issues that we have is that, using dpkg-buildpackage, the configure command is not capable of finding the .qmake.cache file, so, the environment variables set in the configure script and saved in that file are not read, which causes that the apropiate linking parameters are not used. I guess that the problem is caused by a difference in the environment of execution of the configure command. I don't know in which way the dpkg-buildpackage is changing the environment so that it makes fail the building process.
I run 'make deb-x11' to start building process using dpkg-buildpackage: This is the main Makefile:
X11_DEB = gvr-qt-x11-lgpl_$(X11_VERSION)_i386.deb
...
