I have a samba server I had manually configured pam to use winbind in 8.04 I'm pretty sure that when I did that I broke pam. I had not choice at the time but in 10.04 there is a winbind pam module. How can I rewrite the pam configuration to use the default pam winbind configuration?

I just upgraded my Ubuntu V10.4 LTS to Ubuntu 11. After that, I lost my external monitor and I cannot find those usual "preferences", "Administration" navigational menus on top of the screen.
Stumbled into Multiple Monitors under System, but it didn't detect the second monitor. However, the 2nd monitor was active and with system startup messages displayed there during reboot. But as soon as the desktop appear, that 2nd monitor lost its signal.

I recently attempted to change my ip with terminal using "ifconfig etho <input address>" but failed to annotate the previous address. I restarted the network after appending the network document at "/etc/network/interfaces" and restarted the network "/etc/init.d/network restart". Checking through I found the the IP address was what I changed it too yet the problem was attempting to revert it back.Going through a cycle of editing the network document and restart the network has ended in failure and I am curious if there is a way to reset the configuration for eth0 without reinstallation.

I need a video driver for SIS M760GX for an ACER Aspire 5000 laptop.
Everywhere I've looked it says to run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Supposedly, this is supposed to open a window where I can change settings. However it does nothing and just returns me to the prompt.

I copy all music to a single location (~/music) which makes it easier to backup and manage. However, Rhythmbox looks for music both here, and under the purchased music folder, which means that any music I have purchased gets listed twice - once from my music folder, and once from the purchased music folder.I have tried using gconf-editor to change apps/rhythmbox/library_locations to only include my music folder, however when next I restart Rhythmbox, the setting reverts to also including the purchased music folder. Is there a way of preventing this from happening?I only want "~/music" listed for library locations - I do not wish to include "~/.local/share/ubuntuone/Purchased%20from%20Ubuntu%20One".

I started with a Pentium4 system with a FX5500 AGP card and now have a i3 with integrated Intel video (Auburndale). The new motherboard is ASUS P7H55-M PRO. The monitor is a Acer AL1916 (LCD) with only VGA input. I have been using the nVidia oprietary drivers installed the "Debian way" (Cf using a Debian stable stock kernel.I first renamed xorg.conf so X would start without one. Once gdm starts, the monitor says the input is not supported. So I tried reusing the old xorg.conf file, changing the "nvidia" to "i810". X then fails to start and shows an error of no screens found.Everything is fine in text mode; only X is not working.I have to get this fixed very quick or I might not get to use Linux at work anymore.

Don't know what I did but while moving the cursor around fast, suddenly my desktop reverted to the default openSUSE 11.3 background (circles) from a custom jpeg image and all the icons disappeared. Rebooting did not solve the situation. Never had this happen before in over twenty years. Is there a way to restore the previous desktop or do I need to reconfigure everything?

I have a fresh install of Jessie, and am having issues with debconf.
I have been trying to change to mdm from the default lightdm display manager. I have downloaded and installed mdm (apt-get install mdm) but when I run dpkg-reconfigure mdm nothing happens. As I understand it, I should get a menu that lets me choose which display manager to use.
I also installed lirc so I could get my IR remote working again, but when I run dpkg-reconfigure lirc nothing happens. I am supposed to get a menu with various options to choose from.
I have tried dpkg-reconfigure debconf and this gives me the menu with different options to choose, like it should when trying dpkg-reconfigure lirc or dpkg-reconfigure mdm. I tried using dpkg-reconfigure debconf to choose different settings, such as gnome, or editor, but they don't work either.

I've given it the old college try for a couple years, starting with openSUSE 11.1 without success. I'm up to 11.4 now with no change or relief. My openSUSE box with NVIDIA proprietary driver and the default refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz, has an annoying beat frequency with... something, somewhere, causing an annoying ghostly flicker on my trusty 1280x1024 LCD display. I can run both openSUSE and Windows XP on this hardware and they both have the same annoying flicker at those settings. However, in Windows XP, all I have to do is select a 70Hz refresh, resulting in settings of 74.6KHz/70 Hz, and the annoying flicker is cured... for Windows only, of course. I have tried to change these settings in openSUSE to no affect. In 11.4, I find that the advice is to create modelines using CVT and edit xorg.conf, but despite rigid adherence to instructions, there's no change. The monitor continues to see refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz and the annoying flicker persists.
I hate to rag on openSUSE since it does so many things well, but there's a number of adjustments I'd like to make, especially the vertical refresh, that simply won't change, even when following documented or testamented procedures. Concentrating on the vertical refresh for now, is there anything that really works?

I've brought a friend over to linux from windows. He has some how deleted his "Wired Etho" connection. He said his computer would not shut down(Mint Linux 9), so he unplugged it. You guessed it right after restarting no internet. After checking under "Network Connection" his wired connection is gone. My question is? How to reconfigure a "Wired Etho" connection? He has a dsl connection running a Linksys router(sorry I don't know the model number). I have only talked with him on the phone, so I have not personally checked the system out. I just finished working on it this past sunday and everything was fine.

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.
