May 29, 2011I decided to break free from the horrible life of a windows vista user. I like my new debian (Wheezy) installation and everything worked fine so far. Now I stumbled upon a huge problem. When I want startup and login into my gnome installation the first application I open gets to play sound and others after that just don't work. I looked endlessly on google but in my understanding the problem is within the ALSA driver.
Some specs :
OS version : Debian 7 (Wheezy)
Laptop brand : Packerd Bell Easynote LJ-65
Kernel installed : 2.6.38-2-686 (Standard one in wheezy)

Each time I boot, I have to grant root privileges and type in a shell: iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys key dhclient wlan0 Isn't there a file(or location) that I can modify to automatically grant root privileges and execute these commands when debian starts? Something like autoexec.bat in windows.

Feb 5, 2010I have this one AVI file legally downloaded from Veoh, which, however, I cannot playback. If I try to play it back under Totem 2.26.5, (GStreamer 0.10.25), I can see the video, I get no obvious error messages, but I get no sound no matter what I set the volume to: other files I get sound. Under Properties, I see for the Audio codec: Dolby Digital (AC-3). I am running Fedora 11 with all the updates.

Aug 18, 2011I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the alternative installation CD; the installation was just the command line system. On top of this I have installed xorg and awesome window manager. The only problem I am having is with sound; I am unable to hear sound played through both browser-based Flash and locally stored files.
Is there something that I have to do before I can use sound? Edit: I have solved the original problem however I would like to know if I can remove pulseaudio as it seems that I am only using alsa.
Ubuntu :: Computer Starts Then Shuts Down All By Itself?
Oct 3, 2010After using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

Fedora Networking :: Activate Device When Computer Starts
Jul 28, 2010I just did a clean install and ran system-config-network from command line to fix my IP settings. Everything works but when I reboot, my NIC is gone from #ifconfig -a
I have to login to the GUI and go to System --> Administration --> Network --> "Click on my NIC" --> check the box that says "Activate device when computer starts"
Once this box is checked, everything works fine. - I have turned off NetworkManager and just use the network service to manage my ip settings.
I was wondering if this "Activate device when computer starts" can be done through the command line without having to access the GUI?
Ubuntu :: Computer Randomly Starts Refusing SSH Connections?
Jul 20, 2010The ssh server is running Xubuntu 9.04. It was working before. Then I tried SSHing today and it gave me a connection refused. The computers I've tried SSHing from were running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, MacOS, and Solaris 10. None of them would connect. The ssh server is running the latest version of openssh-server (according to apt-get install). I'm assuming something in /etc/ssh/ got changed but I'm not sure.

Nov 11, 2010I've got a computer i'm trying to VNC to.
The problem is that when the computer starts up/reboots it doesn't "Unlock the system keyring"(I think that's what it said).
When I try and attempt to connect to the computer it asks for the VNC password(as per normal) but fails to connect after that.
The reason is that the Ubuntu computer prompts for the user's password to unlock the system(locally).
What I want is to be able to turn on the computer without having to worry about entering the password. I've had it running fine on 8.04 yet the newer version seems to be annoying :s
The system is set to automatically login on startup too.
I've tried this: "delete the keyring folder under /home/XXXX/.gnome2" then setup remote desktop again. But that hasn't worked either. I still have to enter the password to a keyring

General :: Sound Has Totally Gone On Dell Latitude Computer
Apr 7, 2011A friend lent me their Ubuntu book but I can't understand it and could not find anything about the sound suddenly going from the speaker on Monday night. I went to Sony Ericsson's site to check something on my account and loud music suddenly started blaring out so I pressed the Fn button and End which muted it. However, I forgot to take it off before closing down for the night and as of Tuesday morning I have no sound. Would me leaving mute on all night have screwed something up or has it just suddenly gone? I am so upset as I cannot afford to get another laptop as not working and this is my last resort since my original Compaq one died.
I appreciate any "Helpful" solutions. Not in techy but layman's terms please as I won't understand. Also if you do reply, I am in the UK and also don't get notifications so I am not being rude if I can't get back to you quickly. I will be going to bed now.

My speaker system is Logitech X-530 I have located the problem to center-speaker, but the snap-sound only disappear if I mute the center, not lower the input, in the GNOME ALSA Mixer. I have tried to disconnect the antenna to the analoge-TV-tuner. Has anyoe a similar problem, and a trick to fix it? I don't know if it's related to any recent update of the system?
