View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

The computers I've tried SSHing from were running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, MacOS, and Solaris 10. None of them would connect. The ssh server is running the latest version of openssh-server (according to apt-get install). I'm assuming something in /etc/ssh/ got changed but I'm not sure.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a computer i'm trying to VNC to.
The problem is that when the computer starts up/reboots it doesn't "Unlock the system keyring"(I think that's what it said).
When I try and attempt to connect to the computer it asks for the VNC password(as per normal) but fails to connect after that.
The reason is that the Ubuntu computer prompts for the user's password to unlock the system(locally).
What I want is to be able to turn on the computer without having to worry about entering the password. I've had it running fine on 8.04 yet the newer version seems to be annoying :s
The system is set to automatically login on startup too.
I've tried this: "delete the keyring folder under /home/XXXX/.gnome2" then setup remote desktop again. But that hasn't worked either. I still have to enter the password to a keyring

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed MongoDB and I want init to start the database with the --journal flag. I'm quite rusty on how init works, but I know it involves the /etc/init and /etc/rc directories.I've found /lib/init/upstart-job and someone in the chat is suggesting that I just edit that bash script, but I can see it's involved with more than half the system service, so I'm a little hesitant to edit it. In fact, I'm pretty sure if I followed that advice I'd really screw up my system and then the person "helping" me would just stop responding.

I just did a clean install and ran system-config-network from command line to fix my IP settings. Everything works but when I reboot, my NIC is gone from #ifconfig -a
I have to login to the GUI and go to System --> Administration --> Network --> "Click on my NIC" --> check the box that says "Activate device when computer starts"
Once this box is checked, everything works fine. - I have turned off NetworkManager and just use the network service to manage my ip settings.
I was wondering if this "Activate device when computer starts" can be done through the command line without having to access the GUI?
how to modify (or get rid of) the sound (music) that is played when the computer starts ? (with ubuntu).

how can I make vncserver starts on boot?
Realvnc was installed by "apt-get install vnc-server" command.
There in NO start-stop script in /etc/init.d/ (is it ok? ), so I can't use update-rc.d. When placing
vncserver
or
/bin/bash -c "cd /root/ && vncserver :1" 2> /tmp/vncstart &
in rc.local it starts nothing but "vncpasswd //.vnc/passwd" (and YES, there is password in /root/.vnc/passwd)
Please, help!
Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,
because i am booting from the dvd. I dropped to the shell where i saw this message "Inappropriate ioct1 for device". What does all this mean.
I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

Anyways, I created an install CD for the newest Ubuntu, and the CD works. I used it to install Ubuntu, but when I went to reboot to complete the setup, it just went back to Windows normally. Then when I booted from the CD directly, bypassing Windows entirely, my monitor displayed "No sync" and refused to display anything until I turned off all power to the computer and restarted into Windows normally.
How can I make it so that it will boot to Ubuntu?
I was wondering how I can make Windows XP the first and default option on my Grub 2. I use Ubuntu 9.10 through a semi-dedicated partition on my second hard drive, if that helps. I use Grub 2 just cause I have a grub.cfg file, and here it is.
Code:

# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates

If I am using LXDE or another non-Gnome desktop and want to use Nautilus as the file viewer it needs to be launched with the --no-desktop option (so nautilus does not load it's desktop image under the other DE).
I know there is a way to make it so whenever nautilus is launched it will not load the desktop (even if you do not pass the --no-desktop argument) but I do not recall how I did this last time! I believe it was a gconf value. Anyone know what this setting is/how I can accomplish what I am looking to do?
I was making a download option in a script but I cant seem to get the command right

As I checked some online backup solutions I have found information that all of this which I checked have only clients for Win or Mac. But I'm looking for solution with Linux client. As I have read some info on one of the Googled page Linux probably is ready for being an online backup solution as is.So my idea is to create automatic (in the background) backup of my files (photos and docs) with my outside hosting server. I have unlimited shared hosting server with ftp access. Is there any option to built such solution to make backup synchronisation between my Linux comp and shared hosting? What should I get to know to start with such option?

I downloaded kernel 2.6.30 for my project. But I want to see the all symbol and debugging information. So, I try to use option "-g" with make file I don't know how...
I just know the make kernel "make all"
If I want to use "-g" option for vmlinuz with whole symbol for debugging, how can I put that "-g" option into the "make"
Do I have to modify the "Makefile" ? or "only command is possible like make -g something...."
How I can compling the kernel with -g option....

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!
Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

I can make a connection to the vpn server, the connection starts, but nothing happens! My IP address remains the same as previous! There is nothing added to my Knetworkmanager, I'm a beginner I should use a pcf file for my vpn connection. I use it properly, I'm sure because the connection starts and an icon is added to my panel and remains until I disconnect.
I checked it via ifconfig -a, the last part (which is for vpn) is:
