I have this one AVI file legally downloaded from Veoh, which, however, I cannot playback. If I try to play it back under Totem 2.26.5, (GStreamer 0.10.25), I can see the video, I get no obvious error messages, but I get no sound no matter what I set the volume to: other files I get sound. Under Properties, I see for the Audio codec: Dolby Digital (AC-3). I am running Fedora 11 with all the updates.
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to play a video across the network (watch the "Live View" of a Network Camera) using my Linux/Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop. The video plays fine from Windows and Mac using any browser with Quicktime plugin. My Linux/Ubuntu seems to have a Quicktime plugin called Totem, which shows up in Plug-ins tab as QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6 Totem 2.32.0 (using GStreamer 0.10.30) When Firefox tries to open the videostream using Totem, no video is played just there's an unfunctioning play button and a blank video screen. My own suggestion to this problem is to use another side application such as VLC player inside Firefox. But it seems VLC is unusable in this case because the network video's requires HTTP authentication and I cannot enter that authentication info from VLC itself.

Using the software manager I've installed the extra plugins package for Totem, and enabled the Coherence DLNA/UPNP plugin. I can see the device (Humax Freeview HD recorder) in the MediaServers list, and can browse through the programmes I've recorded on it. However, trying to play any of the has no effect, the main part of the window still shows the "clapperboard" graphic.
I noticed that the "recent files" filenames that were appearing on the Movie menu didn't match the ones that were listed in the sidebar - they're of the form e.g. 313.TS rather than the original descriptive name with a .ts extension. Running Totem from a shell prompt, I can see the following console output: request to play: Man on Earth_20110622_0508.ts 013311314 http://192.168.254.1:9000/web/media/313.TS I tried entering that URL into Firefox, and it started downloading okay; according to the LiveHTTPHeaders addon the response headers are

Why can't Totem play the file? Some other codec needed for video/ts files that I've not got installed? (it hasn't prompted me to install any extra packages) Does it just not like the fact the file extension is upper case? Or something else entirely?
On a separate machine, also running Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the VideoLan client; VLC can browse to the files and play them without any problem. So why can't Totem?
My 785G motherboard comes with an integrated sound card. In the manual I see there is an option to install Dolby Software to make 2-channel stereo sources play to 4, 5.1, and 7.1. Is there any equivalent Dolby or other software for OpenSuse 11.2?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI decided to break free from the horrible life of a windows vista user. I like my new debian (Wheezy) installation and everything worked fine so far. Now I stumbled upon a huge problem. When I want startup and login into my gnome installation the first application I open gets to play sound and others after that just don't work. I looked endlessly on google but in my understanding the problem is within the ALSA driver.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the alternative installation CD; the installation was just the command line system. On top of this I have installed xorg and awesome window manager. The only problem I am having is with sound; I am unable to hear sound played through both browser-based Flash and locally stored files.
Is there something that I have to do before I can use sound? Edit: I have solved the original problem however I would like to know if I can remove pulseaudio as it seems that I am only using alsa.
The volume icon is off.No sound. Other multimedia players are ok.

But, unfortunately when I tried to play movies on both default applications (Banshee and Totem) in Open Suse Gnome 11.3, I've got the message to search for XVID MPEG-4 decoder. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a USB dongle to watch tv (Asus U3100 mini) that supports DVB-T. I live in portugal and DVB-T here uses MPEG4 h246 codec. Until now the only app I can have image and sound is VLC. However with VLC I can't schedule recordings and other features that totem + gnome-dvb-daemon has (or mythtv, also no sound with it). I have all related gstreamer plugins, ffmpeg, x264 libs and I've tried to install everything related with mpeg and aac. i don't know what I'm missing here, Video with totem is also a little jerky compared to VLC and xine.

no sound on playing .flv files, the volume control greyout. however vlc can play them without sound problem. videos also works without problem on sound.
I'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.
I just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 32bit GNOME on my notebook and everything runs fine...yet
But there is an issue with the sound playback on mp4's and quicktime (apple trailers) that I was not able to fix.
I added the Packman 11.3 repo via Yast -> Software Repositories -> Add... -> Community Repositories
Then I used zypper to get the related gstreamer-plugins ffmpeg faad vlc w32codec-all libmp4v2...
So far the media playback seem good, except the issue of "no sound with gstreamer related media players on quicktime and mp4"...
I set all available/related/installed packages to "Packman" (Yast -> Software Management), did zypper refresh + zypper up but I am simply not able to get sound from gstreamer...It works fine in VLC though!
Some google and forum research showed that it's an issue that has occurred over the recent years but I could not found a proper working solution.
If I run totem from the terminal I get the following output (plus a windows asking for permission to search for the required codec 'MPEG-4 AAC Decoder'...but it is not able to find one!):

The last Message is interesting "All missing plugins are blacklisted..." hmmm I did not blacklist any plugins...where can you see these blacklist? Is that the point, the plugin is there but blacklisted?
I installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. I recently upgraded to F14_x64 with success (aside from having to muck with Flash to make it work). Here's the problem: A certain subset of my .m4a /AAC files will not play in Rythmbox. Note that some of them work just fine. As for the ones that do not play, Rythmbox throws the error "This file is invalid and cannot be played". However, VLC can play the error-prone files just fine. The rest of my MP3/M4a collection works fine in Rythmbox. Not that is should matter, but all of the aforementioned files were obtained via iTunes (no DRM, though, and once again, they work fine in alternate players.)

I'm a new-bee when it comes to configuring lenny at admin level, however with the help from the forum I was able to get my SONY Vaio VGN cs 190 configured successfully. I've gnome-core installed and here is my concern. I've Windows running on the same machine. I've a realtek sound card with Dolby SoundRoom. It works beautifully in Windows, as I've Dolby Control Center application to control the amount of bass I need. I also have a logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speaker system. Even though, it's a 2.1, it produces amazing sound. If I disable Dolby using Dolby Control Center, I fail to listen wonderful sounds whether I'm playing music or movies in Windows.
I'm not quite pleased with my experience of movies or music with Lenny as there is no Dolby Control Center application to control it. I've tried several suggestions, but none was fruitful. I've even tried Wine, but I'm not happy with it. If I can get this Dolby Control Center to work, I can completely take off Windows from my Laptop, which is my ideal goal.
Basically my portable computer's speakers have "Dolby Home Theater - Virtual Surround Sound" written on them. Now I figure there has to be some software (in Windows) that controls the whole thing. Is there something similar that in Ubuntu?
