OpenSUSE Multimedia :: When Boot Up, (runlevel 3), Sound Is There Via The Mic/line-in Jack, But As Soon As KDE Starts, The Sound Cuts?

Jun 24, 2011

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack« - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound After Leaving And Returning Runlevel 5?

Jan 19, 2010

Every time I leave runlevel 5 (shutdown, reboot, init 3 or whatever) and then return to runlevel 5, I lose sound and have to delete and then re-edit sound card config in Yast Sound module to restore it.When returning to GUI environment, the sound card appears OK in Yast but I get no sound from any of my multimedia apps - Amarok, VLC, Firefox all go quiet. Strangely, it still plays the KDE intro jingle when KDE starts up.To restore sound I click delete in Yast and I'm prompted with the following KDE dialogue:

Removed Sound Devices
KDE detected one or more internal sound devices were removed.
Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Via Vt1708s Azalia No Sound When Starting Jack Sound Server?

Jun 7, 2011

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.

I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.

I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.

Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?

Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = Connection refused

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Randomly Cuts Out

Jun 15, 2010

This is one of two niggles I've had in migrating to ubuntu, which I must say is (otherwise) absolutely fab.

Problem 1 is an 18 month old "legacy" ATI card, which refuses to be fixed.

Problem 2 (I suspect) is more solvable.

When listening to music, (either from ..... or rhythmbox) after an indeterminate period of time, (it varies substantially from around 5 mins - 1 hour) the sound cuts out without warning. Videos continue to play, but in silence. This silence affects the browser as a whole (chromium). A workaround for this has been to simply restart the program, but this is becoming quite annoying. Sometimes issuing

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Cuts Out Until I Reboot / What To Do?

Aug 19, 2010

I've recently upgraded to 10.04, and never had any problems in 9.10, but now, sometimes when Banshee attempts to play a sound file, it will kill my sound output until I reboot. Haven't been able to get anywhere by fiddling with ALSAmixer or the like, and everything is just fine on reboot, but the files don't always cause problems, and they were all fine back in 9.10. Has anyone else encountered this? I've been unable to find any other references to this problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Cuts To About Half Volume?

Jul 11, 2010

When the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound To Usb Audio Device Cuts Out After A Few Minutes?

Mar 27, 2010

i am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack Control - Feedback Crescendos Then Cuts Out

Jun 12, 2010

So I've used Jack Control for sometime now to control my recording suite that I use (Ardour, Rakarak, and Hydrogen Drum Machine) recently however, when I start the Jack control, as soon as I connect input to output in the connections window, it's like it has internal feedback. The feedback crescendos, then cuts out. after that (let's say I have my Fender plugged into the sound card) if I strike a string there it comes out muddy distorted with an awful echo (some what like what echo would sound like on blown speakers). I have checked all the settings, everything is as it was before when it worked fine... dunno... is Lucid possessed?

Earlier, I found that there is no sound on my headphone's jack where as the normal sound output from my laptops's speakers is OK. I fiddled with the available mixers but couldnt get anything. There are no errors or anything in the messages window. And I checked to see if it was connected to the correct interface. I have a mac mini and I run ppc lucid lynx. The system does detect my hardware, and its not muted. All I want to do is use MusE. Is there maybe anyway to run MusE without jack?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NO SOUND After JACK Install?

Sep 28, 2010

I am trying to set my computer up to do sound sequencing. I want to plug my MIDI keyboard in and record with a sequencer. Running 10.04, was following a tutorial on installing JACK, and my audio stopped working. Since then, I've gone through all guides I can find, some advising an upgrade of ALSA, some saying to use OCC. I've tried both, but nothing seems to work.

I suspect it may have something to do with libjack0. I could not install jackd because it claimed libjack0 to be the wrong version, and for some reason I couldn't upgrade. So I uninstalled libjack0, then installed jackd, which automatically included the version of libjack0 it wanted. After that, I could get the JACK server running, but the computer had no sound.

I will post whatever logs or information necessary to troubleshoot, but I don't know exactly how or what to post. If you need logs, please tell me how to get them.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound Through Headphone Jack

Dec 4, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro 320 running Ubuntu 10.10. I can get sound through the onboard speakers but when I plug headphones into the jack, the onboard speakers mute (correct behaviour), but no sound comes from the headphones (incorrect behaviour). The headphones do work with other sound sources.I have made sure all the alsa drivers are up to date and correct and the system is seeing the sound card OK according to aplay -l:

The alsamixer run from the command line or Gnome shows "Master", "PCM", "Beep" and "Capture" all normal with nothing muted. The alsa-base.conf file has the following as the last line as per various posts that seem to have a fix for this problem:options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro position_fix=0 enable=yes.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cannot Capture Sound From Line In Input In 11.4 (no Pulseadio)?

May 18, 2011

I have been searching for an answer through most of the recent posts about sound issues but have not been able to find a solution. I am currently unable to capture sound from the "Line" input on my sound card. I do have sound and is working correctly for all applications and I do have P/A disabled (I'm not a huge fan of the sound quality with P/A enabled). I have checked and re-checked many settings but to no avail have not been able to capture sound. I'm sure I may be missing something or have not done something in order for this to work. I was using openSUSE 11.4 on a different pc and had no problems, unfortunately this is a different pc with a different sound card which is on-board so I am not entirely familiar with it yet.

It is a C-media CMI9880 which shows up as a Intel HDA (ICH6) and appears to be configured correctly.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get Sound From M-Audio Firewire Solo (using FFADO And JACK)?

Jul 20, 2010

I'm a complete Linux newbie - only installed it yesterday, and have spent hours trying to get my M-Audio Firewire Solo sound card to work. I can hear nothing at all. I know nothing of Linux, but am willing to learn. While I learn though, it would be nice to listen to a little Hall & Oates. I've got to the stage where the error messages I'm receiving don't bring up any results on Google. Here's what things look like (watch out, big pic):

Those sample rate errors appear in the terminal when I start ffado-mixer. I'm running JACK with everything set as I think it's supposed to be, except that 'Realtime' is unchecked. If I start JACK running with 'Realtime' checked, it tries to launch and fails, saying "JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime scheduling. After applying these changes, please re-login in order for them to take effect". I don't know what more it wants me to do - i've already added

@audio ´┐Ż rtprio 100
@audio - nice -10
@audio ´┐Ż memlock unlimited

to /etc/security/limits.conf, and selected the 2.6.31-11-rt kernel on GRUB bootup. I'm a member of 'audio' and 'disk' groups like'm supposed to be. Have I not got the connections right in JACK? Have I got some sample rate settings wrong somewhere?I'm not even bothered about low latency with the realtime kernel right now, I just want to hear some sound

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Wineasio/JACK - Assign More Inputs Than Sound Card Actually Has?

Feb 10, 2011

I am running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 and have been using wineasio to connect Reaper to JACK successfully for a while now. However, I am now experimenting with using multiple soundcards in JACK (via alsa_in). My main card is an M-audio delta 44 (4 inputs) and I want to route the inputs from my onboard soundcard into Reaper using JACK. No problem so far.. This all works with alsa_in. But the problem is I can't get reaper to start with more than 4 in/out.

With wineasio, there is an environment variable "ASIO_INPUTS=" and "ASIO_OUTPUTS=" which allows you to set the number of in/out... Which I already used to bump it up to 4 when the default was 2. But when I try to set the inputs to 8, for example, Reaper still only recognizes that there are 4 inputs in its configuration.

The problem here is I need more than 4 separate input tracks going into Reaper simultaneously. It would also be nice to just have some "virtual" in/out ports to route things around in more ways. Another option I have considered is the "Rearoute" drivers in Reaper, however I'm not sure if that will play well with JACK. I'll have to test it tonight and see. I guess if it doesn't connect to JACK, it may be theoretically possible to run JACK simultaneously with the Rearoute driver with Reaper, and then actually use alsa_in on the same card to bridge it to JACK (in addition to using alsa_in for the onboard soundcard inputs as well)... But if this even works, I'm not sure if the latency will be worse ...

Does anybody have any insights on this? Am I doing something wrong or overlooking something? Is this just a limitation of wine or wineasio that it cannot assign more inputs than the primary sound card physically has? Would "virtual ports" help me at all in this endeavor?
