General :: Unable To Access Windows Shares Or Printer Over Network
Dec 19, 2009I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".

Jul 19, 2011I had windows 7 and centos 5.5 dual boot earlier working fine.Today I had to format the windows partition and reinstall windows 7. Now I cannot access to my earlier CentOS partition.I need to access it without loosing anything on it. I tried with EasyBCD at Windows but it didn't help.Also tried to get files using an Ubuntu live CD but there that partition shows as LVM.What else I can do to boot CentOS again?

Apr 29, 2011I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??
I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

Aug 12, 2010Want to access a printer attached to a windows 7 server. What I did was the following: 1. Installed samba-common, samba-client & samba-winbind. 2. Included Samba & Samba Client as Trusted Services in the Firewall with system-config-firewall. 3. SELinux is Disabled (in System Default Enforcing Mode). 4. Shared the printer in the Windows 7 server. Other Windows hosts in the LAN can print successfully.
In system-config-printer, I selected Add Printer -> Windows Printer via SAMBA -> Browse... The SMB Browser successfully found the Share and the Host, but won't show the printer. Am I missing something here? The samba wiki mentions that I also need to change some windows registries in this page: [URL].... Do I really need to do this? I don't want to needlessly mess with windows registry
SUSE / Novell :: Access Denied When Printing From Windows Machine To Shared Printer
Nov 25, 2008I have a OpenSUSE 11 machine set up as a domain controller. I have set my printer up to be shared to Windows machines logging into the domain. I was able to install the printer to my Windows machines. When you go to the printers folder in Windows, it shows the printer but says "access denied" instead of the usual "ready". If I print to the shared printer the job will go through. I am thinking it is an authentication issue because if I log into Windows machine as "root" and let it build a profile, the printer doesn't show the "access denied" message. How do I allow other users to have access to the printer?

Sep 18, 2009I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

Aug 4, 2009I have a linux domain (FEDORA CORE 1) and two laptop's which are part of my domain with windows xp pro service pack 2.I have given two ip's to both the laptop's being primary as global and secondary as local.I have configured printer in one laptop and shared.Till last week i was accessing that shared printer from my other laptop and every thing was working fine.Last week i formatted one laptop,(which dose not have shared printer) from then onwards i am not able to access my other laptop. I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines.And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via hostname, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why.

General :: Set Printer Options When Printing From System To Windows?
Jun 17, 2011We want to print PDFs from a Linux server to a HP LaserJet 1320 PCL 6 which is attached to a Windows print server.
The command we use is
lp -d LaserJet sicl_rcpdebtnt_5.pdf
Problem is, the printout comes with the top 10% of the page not printed. i.e. the printing starts from about 10% of the PDF. The header and top information is not printed.
We tried the scaling option:
lp -o scaling=75 -d LaserJet sicl_rcpdebtnt_5.pdf
But that also has no effect. Only the characters become smaller but still the same problem is there.
What can we do to print the entire PDF in ONE page. When we open the PDF in Windows and print it we have to say Fit to printer margins for the printer's page scaling property.
How to set this in command line Linux?

Oct 14, 2010I have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and my basement computer running Windows 7. I want to be able to access files on on both computers from either. I also want to be able to print from my laptop to the printer attached to the basement computer. I finally got printing working. Then I tackled the filesharing. I finally get filesharing working and now, I can't get printing working again, even though I've gone back to the version of smb.conf that I had when I was able to print. So here is what I've got.

When I look at my printer properties in Ubuntu I see the status: Idle - Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times) Cups Error Log When I look at the Printer Error Log, I see: (partial) Printer log extract.txt I can ping the IP address of the windows box 192.168.0.5, but when I try to ping the name owner-pc it fails. This would lead me to beleive that the there is a name resolution problem.

Feb 9, 2010I've not been able to find a solution on the forums, so thought I'd post. My DELL PC came with Vista installed and I then added Ubuntu. This seemed to work fine although I didn't really use Ubuntu too much. Then last week I decide to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 12. I selected the replace existing Linux option during the install process.
After installation, Grub displayed 2 options: Fedora and Other. Fedora was fine, other didn't boot. After readinf around I added another option for vista, but this results in the following error:
