Ubuntu :: Can't Access Because Recently "re-installed Windows
Mar 30, 2011
about 6 months ago I installed Ubuntu because my Windows XP had been partially corrupted and was screwing up. One month ago I formated the drive XP was on and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on it; I couldn't dual boot so I looked online, found EasyBCD 2.0, installed it, and from what I can tell, I need GRUB on my Ubuntu side to be able to boot it, before this I didn't even know what GRUB was.

Is there a way to see the packages that I have recently installed? I'm trying to remove a program and I'm not sure what the names of the packages that came with it are.

Using Ubuntu Lucid with Gnome desktop.I was just playing around trying to find a media player I liked and installed Bangarang via the Software Centre. This took an absolute age and now I realise why - it has basically installed the entire KDE environment and associated lib packages as well.I have found /var/ log/ dpkg.log shows what has been installed and of course I can wade through that to make a list of all the packages and uninstall them all via Synaptic. But that will take a long time to do.
Is there anyway to somehow automate rolling back any package changes since a certain time?I've checked the man for dpkg and I can't see any mention of anything like this.

Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.

Old windows user finally real tired of them.. Kudos to Fedora 13 as the only popular Linux OS available for us frugal folk that embraced proprietary hardware on my old pukey hp pavilion laptop dv4000 wi fi card.Sad to report massive issues after allowing some 330+ updates to possibly infect this great OS. I'm currently running this 'Live" so I'm staying brief. My strategy will be to not allow any updating until I'm sure they are trusted and or needed, as this is the chosen OS, and I pledge to be moe involved as I try to figure out where or why this initial install went way south

I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??
I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

I had windows 7 and centos 5.5 dual boot earlier working fine.Today I had to format the windows partition and reinstall windows 7. Now I cannot access to my earlier CentOS partition.I need to access it without loosing anything on it. I tried with EasyBCD at Windows but it didn't help. Also tried to get files using an Ubuntu live CD but there that partition shows as LVM.What else I can do to boot CentOS again?

I switched to Chrome half a year back because Firefox had become sluggish on my Linux box (both Ubuntu and OpenSuse). 6 months later and the problem remains - anyone know what is going on and any tips to improve? I still need to use Firefox occasionally for Firebug.

One of my objections is the "recently installed" list at the top of the menu (I use the CLASSIC one-column style as opposed to the box version with multiple "tabs"). I often install 5-10 or more applications at one time and do NOT want a long list of programs popping up. Is there any way to at least clear this list? Disabling it would be even better, if anyone can tell me how to do that. While I have other aesthetic complaints, I have seen at least partial solutions to some of my other ones but this one I haven't seen anywhere.I have read it only stays there for a few days, but it is still annoying to have that long list. Also, if I ever set a friend up with our favorite OS they would have a list of around 50 programs sitting there and that looks really cluttered.

Ive been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems. Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

I am dual booting OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows 7 both 64bit on my PC. I've got VMware workstation installed on both. I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.

At the moment I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. My password has recently become unrecognizable. My password has never been changed and it has always worked up until now. I cannot put my computer to sleep or hibernate because my password for login will not be recognized. I cannot perform and downloads, system updates, or administrative changes because my password is not recognized. How can I go about fixing this issue?
I am completely new to this so I really do need step by step help here. If the last paragraph made your mind explode, I'll put it into laymen:
My administrative password that I have always used is all of a sudden not recognized. And no, I did not have CAPS on the entire time.

I've recently had to reinstall Ubuntu and start fresh 'cos I messed thing up luckily enough I had a pen drive handy to transfer my important docs, but man it was a pain to get all the docs back in there right places - I don't fancy much doing it again! What I'm looking for is some software that'll back-up my home folder, yet I'm having a real difficult time finding something suitable. I'm looking for something that may:
Auto schedule backups Retain file permissions Options for excluding particular file extensions i.e. .avi, .mp3 etc Is there any software that'll do the job?

I have just built 2 Ubuntu Desktop machines with a 2TB drive in each.
The machines are to sit on a Windows network one as media storage the other to as backup for the first.
I have shared a folder on each machine and all the shares can be accessed from the other Ubuntu machine and from the windows machines.
I have installed another 2TB hard drive in each machine and formatted as ext4 file system.
I then created a folder on each machines new hard drive and shared as usual. The shared folders can be seen on the network but cannot be accessed by network machines.
The error is "Unable to Mount location" "Failed to mount Windows Share"

I'm having trouble mounting my mac partition of my HD on the linux side while it's running on Parallels(a VM for mac). I've tried using the GUI and the terminal with no success... Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing. I've tried to follow other forums about it, but the stuff out there is out dated, I mean like 2006-2007... I'm running Snow Leopard osx 10.6.4. It shows "Failed to receive share list from server" when I click on the mac partition in the network GUI, to try and veiw the files. When I try to mount through terminal, it says "No such file or directory."

I am reasonably literate, but grew up with DOS and Windows. I tried ubuntu before and found it ok but never persevered.
I have just installed 11.3 32-bit and I cannot access the web. I first tried using a usb wireless (Belkin F5D7050 - Ver. 3) it seems to be recognised and functioning but no web access. I can ping that's all. Can't access internet repositories either.
I then tried a wired connection. Again it seems to be recognised and I can ping successfully but no web access or repositories.

My monitor recently stopped working(H/W problem)..after getting it repaired, the ubuntu system is acting weird in the sense that after running for some time,it sort of freezes and does not allow to open any new applications. On trying to open new application, the mouse curosr goes to busy mode and a new tab on task bar is displayed showing(starting 'App'),but after some 10-15 sec,the bar is gone, mouse cursor back to its idle mode and the application is never opened.REstarting the system takes it back to proper state, but after sometime-same prob..I cant open any application, not even system monitor to see whether cpu is being utilized to max.
Also,i have noticed one more thing on starting the system,i transferred 1 file(CUT FILE) from linux partition to windows partition and it got transferred successfully. After sometime, when the above prob came,i rebooted the system to see that the file is again present in Linux partition(And also windows parttion).THis is even after cutting the file and not copying.
