General :: Installed Windows 7 & Lost Access To Earlier CentOS

Jul 19, 2011

Now I cannot access to my earlier CentOS partition.I need to access it without loosing anything on it. I tried with EasyBCD at Windows but it didn't help. Also tried to get files using an Ubuntu live CD but there that partition shows as LVM.What else I can do to boot CentOS again?

General :: Ubuntu 11.04 Installed Alongside Windows 7 Resized Partition / Cannot Access

Apr 29, 2011

I have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??

I've been scouring the forums for something helpful but I can't find anything that is a comparable circumstance.I can still access Ubuntu through my flashdrive.

Ubuntu :: Installed, Lost Windows Install?

May 5, 2010

Tonight I decided I would install Ubuntu on my laptop, which also has windows 7 installed on it.I have two hard drives in the laptop, one 160GB in the "primary" bay and a 320GB in the "secondary" bay. My partioning got a bit screwed up when in installed windows (mostly because of laziness on my part) and the Ubuntu install just made the mess even bigger. The way it was setup before the Ubuntu install was this:Windows has a 55GB partition on the 320GB drive (yeah for some reason i am booting from the secondary drive, hence the quotes). This partition is bootable.

Following the windows partition is a 255GB storage partion, NTFSThere was 37GB of unused space at the beginning of the 160GB driveThere is a 122GB storage partition, NTFSBoth dives have a 49MB dell utility partition, FATAs you can probably tell, I really butchered the partitioning when installing windows.I took the 37GB partition on the first disk and split it into a 33GB partition for Ubuntu and a 4ish GB partition for the swapfile. After Ubuntu was installed it worked fine, but I cannot see the windows install in GRUB.This brings me to my question: How can I make GRUB see my windows install that is on a separate hard drive than the Ubuntu install?I know I could resolve the issue by wiping everything and doing it properly, but I really dont want to have to do this if there is an easy fix that will let me boot windows again. All of the windows files and whatnot are still there because I can see them from inside Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Because Recently "re-installed Windows

Mar 30, 2011

about 6 months ago I installed Ubuntu because my Windows XP had been partially corrupted and was screwing up. One month ago I formated the drive XP was on and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on it; I couldn't dual boot so I looked online, found EasyBCD 2.0, installed it, and from what I can tell, I need GRUB on my Ubuntu side to be able to boot it, before this I didn't even know what GRUB was.

General :: Partition Lost After Win7 Installed

Jul 28, 2011

I have a PC, with 1 HD of 500GB and the following partitions:
Windows XP - NTFS 50 GB
Windows 7 - NTFS 350 GB
Linux Ubuntu - 98 GB
Linux swap - 2GB

The last OS that I have installed was Windows 7, and each time, when I started up my PC, I saw GRUB first, and after choosing the option to load windows, the Windows loader giving me 2 options, one for Windows 7 and one for Windows XP. I didn't like to see first GRUB and after that the windows loader, it was redundant, but everything was working well. One day, I decided to mix the windows 7 and the windows XP partitions (deleting the windows XP and resizing windows 7). I tried to do that with the Windows 7 utility included in the control panel but I couldn't. It said that I couldn't delete the active partition or something like that. It was not possible to delete the partition in which WinXP was stored.

Then, I decided to boot with Ubuntu and use the partitioning tool that comes with it to delete the WinXP partition. It was possible to delete the partition, and I also putted the option "bootable" on the 350GB Windows 7 partition. After that, I rebooted and it was not possible to load windows. Then I tried changing in GRUB the entry for Windows, because I thought if I could put the correct partition to load from, it wouldn't be more problems. I tried several times but I couldn't load windows, so I putted the Windows 7 DVD and I started the installation process, waiting to see an option saying that there was already a system in the partition of 350GB, and allowing me to fix the mbr in that partition.

My surprise was when I choose the partition of 350GB and the installation process began. I was afraid of to lose my data then I decided to reset the computer! And now, all my 350GB disk is gone! I can't see the partition when I enter with Ubuntu. I'm really worried about this, because the computer detects the 350GB partition as empty, and I don't know what to do! I turned off the computer and now I am using another to write this. I have all my files and important information in that partition! and It seems it's lost. I hope it's still possible to restore the partition. Actually I don't care if I have to install again my operating systems but I need my information!

CentOS 5 :: Can't Access Internet From Windows XP Clients / Enable This?

Jan 3, 2011

I am stepping into Linux world ...and I have chosen CentOS.
I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a dedicated IBM server successfully. My server has two network cards. I have configured eth0 for lease line internet connection with a live IP (113.xxx.xxx.xxx) and eth1 for local LAN with a static IP (192.168.0.1).

Now,
1. DHCP is working fine and I can access the server from my Windows XP clients.
2. I can access the server with SSH client PuTTY from home ( with the live IP ) and from the local LAN (with static IP 192.168.0.1)
3. I can access my shared server directory 'public' from my XP clients
4. Internet is working on sever and I have updated the server with yum update.

But, I cannot access internet from my XP clients machines.

I read "The Definitive Guide to CentOS" and tweaked the config files in different ways but it did not help. now after two sleepless nights I am here as my last hope.

I admit, I am not aware of every linux terms and commands, but I am getting into it. code...

General :: Lost Windows Partition After Gparted Wiped Old One

Mar 21, 2011

I realise that this is not a pure Linux Q, but I am hoping for tolerance and even help! After removing the partitions (/,/home) that held an older Linux installation, gparted showed the original Windows XP partition followed by the new unallocated space. On rebooting, there was a Grub rescue error (text not noted, sorry). A live install running gparted shows a totally empty disk!

The removed OS was booted via Grub2 and I imagine that it is choking when there is no secondary(?) file to be found since it was vaped. I also imagine that this is a fairly straight-forward matter, something like replacing the MBR but I am so far from Windows these days that I am unsure how to progress with rescuing the partition. The machine has no floppy - that's how I would have initially booted it way back when. Is this something that I can do either through a Linux live distro or via a Windows CD?

Server :: Unable To Access Samba Share On CentOS 5.4 From Windows XP Or Vista

Jan 23, 2010

I can't be the first one with this problem. What am I missing?

I have setup Samba servers in the past, just none under SELinux. The last one I configured was a couple years ago, so I wouldn't doubt I'm a bit rusty.

---- Environment summary:
Clean server install of CentOS 5.4 includes SELinux
- lets call this 'server'
- updated samba to 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1

Client1 - Windows XP sp4 - WINS configuration uses 'server' noted above
Client2 - Windows Vista - WINS configuration uses 'server' noted above

---- What works / what doesn't ------
Clients can see the server (XP and vista) in network neighborhood.
The following does not work from windows (xp or vista)
net view
net view \server
net view \server-ip
net view \servershare

This does work on the server
smbclient -L \server
smbclient -L \server --user validuser
smbclient -L \client1 --user validuser

---- What I have configured and tried (config/output below) --------
firewall ports for samba are open
SELinux enforcing or permissive
file context is set on share
samba booleans are set
