I have newly installed Ubuntu 10.04 lts. Everytime when I am boot my system, Ubuntu try to check my harddisk. I am stopping that by pressing "c" key.Why it is so? anything problem with my hard disk or I need to disable anything for avoiding it for everytime?

View 13 Replies View RelatedOn my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 IDE drives, Windows XP is on the Master drive & Fedora 12 is on a partition the other drive. I purposely installed the Linux boot loader on the same drive as Fedora because want to use NTLDR as the primary boot loader. According to a guide I found [URL], I should be able to copy the Linux boot sector to a file & put that copy on the Windows drive & then modify boot.ini, so I am prompted to with an OS choice a startup.
The problem is the command the guide gives to copy the Linux boot sector (dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=bootsect.lnx size=512 count=1) has outdated syntax and does not work. What syntax would make this command work in Fedora 12? Another guide I found ([URL]-vista-already) suggested using: Grub4Dos & modifying boot.ini. This method almost worked until grub gave an error that there was no kernel loaded. What would I type into the grub prompt to load the kernel? How would I automate the loading of the kernel, so I don't have to specify the kernel each time?

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

Every time I try to boot into Ubuntu, it never goes any further than Checking battery state. Once it gets there it pauses for about 2 minutes then goes to and doesn't go any further. I can still press CTRL+ALT+F(1-6) to get to a command line, but I'm kinda n00bish when it comes to the command line.

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
Sometimes when Ubuntu starts, it appears a screen with "Scanning disk in progress. It may take some time". But after it reaches 70% it completely stops, so I have to do a hard restart . Can I just switch off this automate? It doesn't help only makes problems. And slows down booting.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi am currently running palimpsest (system -> administration -> disk utility) and letting it "check" an unmounted filesystem.
i know its just running fsck.ext3 on this drive... the drive is formatted ext3, and is used on a hardware media player (WDTV Live Plus) in another room... i just moved it in here to avoid copying recorded HD shows over the LAN.
anyway, i was informed at boot with this drive connected that it needed to be checked, after booting it is mounted, but says it has errors and needs to be checked. it is checking, i would assume messages from fsck.ext3 would be logged to /var/log/fsck/checkfs, but i have never been interested in this type of thing before... usually when my drives start to get errors, its time to replace them... this one im sure is caused by being unmounted incorrectly by the stupid WDTV Live Plus...it locks up sometimes, lol...
i dunno, this is a big drive. just wish there was some "status update" other than a whirling indicator... im tailing the log file i mentioned above, but so far it just has "Nothing has been logged yet." (which i take as a really good thing at this point.
EDIT: at the very end of the filesystem check, i got a message about the filesystem being clean with no errors. id still like more of an indication than "whirling indicator thingy"...guess ill go back to CLI for checking filesystems. lol

I'm trying to setup my test nagios to check the disk space of another linux box. I've got it setup and checking. But to my surprise, it was checking the nagios server's local disk space instead of the remote linux.
Here is my services.cfg.

My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.
The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.
On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.
When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.
I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.
I have two questions:
- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?
- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?
You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.
I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
