I am having 2 Hard Disk 1 is having RHEL 5 Installed And 2nd is having Windows XP, now i want to dual boot my PC with the help of this two Hard Disk? Can i Dual Boot with RHEL & Win XP having Installed in 2 different HD? what is the Procedure?
View 4 RepliesI'm having installation issues with linux. I'm trying to set up a dual boot with vista and linux. I prepared my computer by backing up my files and partitioning my hard drive, leaving 20GB for linux. I downloaded Linux Mint 7, and booted from USB (using the universal USB installer from pendrivelinux.com). All good, entered into linux and installed by following the prompts (selecting use largest unallocated partition to point linux to the partition). At this stage the screen cleared to just leave me with the desktop background.
I patiently waited for it to reboot which never happened. So I waited for 20mins or so, then shut the computer down because I couldn't think of what else to do. When I restarted (without using the livecd/usb) it just went straight to vista. I did a bit of reading and found it might have been something to do with vista taking over grub, and some of the tutorials suggested downloading EasyBCD. So I did that, here's the summary:

Now when I turn my computer on, I get options for vista and linux. Vista works fine, but if I select Linux Mint 7 I get an error that reads "cannot load from harddisk, insert systemdisk and press any key".
I have installed on my computer Fedora 10, now I want to install opensuse and create a dual boot environment and I want to have them both on the same hard disk. how to carry on with this task?

My system has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on /sda1 and originally a 10.04 on /sdb1-3, now upgraded to 11.04. The Ubuntu system works fine (teething troubles with nvidia drivers on upgrade but fixed now), and the Windows system shows up in the grub menu, but when it's selected, I just get `GRUB Hard Disk Error' and nothing else. Windows installed properly, and booted successfully until I installed Ubuntu in the first place. I can still access the files on that drive from within Ubuntu.
I've tried fixboot in the Win Recovery Console, which sounded like it did something, but didn't fix the problem. This problem isn't new to grub2, by the way - I just haven't needed Windows in a year.
I have a dual boot System with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix and Windows XP SP3 on an Asus eeePC 1000HE. I had some troubles with updating kernels etc. and I ended up with following problem:

Some partitions don't show a file system because they are luks-encrypted.
As I mentioned earlier, I am able to mount sda1. I think the problem is that the Partition Boot Sector is corrupted, even though I am not sure if the ntfs partition is damaged at all or if GRUB is the problem.
As I said I had problems with a kernel update and therefore had to reinstall GRUB. I think, but I am not sure, that I accidentally installed GRUB on sda1 (the windows partition) instead of on sda. After I installed GRUB on sda again, I was able to boot linux and fixed sda1 with testdisk. Before, sda1 showed as four partitions (sda1p1, ... , sda1p4). I was not able to mount sda1 till I fixed it with testdisk. testdisk says the Boot Sector of sda1 is OK, so does ntfsfix.
Finally, an extract from my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

The Windows XP entry is added by myself. I don't know much about grub, so there might be the error.
I tried to keep it as short as possible (this is only the end of the story), I hope I didn't forget anything important. Please ask if there is something not clear.
I am in Tanzania with this netbook, so it is not possible to boot Windows CD and fix the windows partition with it, also I don't have a very fast Internet connection.
Is there a way to fix this without a Windows CD? Maybe it is just a dumb mistake in the menu.lst?
i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 2 IDE drives, Windows XP is on the Master drive & Fedora 12 is on a partition the other drive. I purposely installed the Linux boot loader on the same drive as Fedora because want to use NTLDR as the primary boot loader. According to a guide I found [URL], I should be able to copy the Linux boot sector to a file & put that copy on the Windows drive & then modify boot.ini, so I am prompted to with an OS choice a startup.
The problem is the command the guide gives to copy the Linux boot sector (dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=bootsect.lnx size=512 count=1) has outdated syntax and does not work. What syntax would make this command work in Fedora 12? Another guide I found ([URL]-vista-already) suggested using: Grub4Dos & modifying boot.ini. This method almost worked until grub gave an error that there was no kernel loaded. What would I type into the grub prompt to load the kernel? How would I automate the loading of the kernel, so I don't have to specify the kernel each time?

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.

I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.5 system that had 2 primary partitions (2nd is setup as LVM with multiple LVM partitions) and then installed Windows 7 as Dual Boot.
However, Windows 7 has installed a 200MB system partition which is GPT/EFI as partition 3 and the Win7 OS as a Primary Partition.
I have a heap of space undefined after this fourth primary partition.
However, as 4 primary partitions have been used, I can no longer create an extended partition to utilise this.
As such I would like to know what is the best and safest way to proceed, and if possible step by steps instructions for the best option eg:
1. Delete the Windows 7 System Partition and create the extended partition (I expect this will prevent Windows from booting)
2. Use something like partition magic to change the Win 7 OS Partition 4 to an extended partition (Not sure if this will work)
3. Make changes to the overall system including both Linux and Windows so that it will use GPT only (I have
had no experience with GPT so this is a bit scary)
4. Other?
I just started working with Linux over the weekend. I do have a working dual booting system but it's not configured exactly how I want it to be. Currently Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu are on the same hard drive but different partitions. The Windows boot screen comes up and I can select Windows or Ubuntu fine. Grub comes up when I select Ubuntu and I can successfully select any choice in the menu and it will run properly.
Everything works great now so you may wonder why I even want to keep tinkering, well, it's not working how I want it to. This is what I want it to do. I want Windows 7 on disk 0 and Ubuntu on disk 1. I want each OS to have it's own hard drive. I want Grub to be the only boot loader that comes up with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. I want to skip the window's OS selection screen all together. I can modify Grub, I've already done some of that on my work computer.
I've been installing from windows. Should I use a CD instead? Would that accomplish my goals without doing anything special?
I have an old unuseable computer at home that became useless after a hard disk failure. I don't want to spend money on buying a new PATA IDE HDD for it, so I was wondering if I can use a PXE boot server on my notebook (using a virtual machine with Linux) and boot a Linux on the old machine with PXE without using Hard Disk. It is possible? Do I will need to make some extra configuration or use some specific enviroment do do this?

I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -
After completing the installation of Fedora-FEL edition, I cant boot from my hard disk. "No bootable device found " error appears.

I tried to restore grub using "setup (...)" command.but same error repeats.
Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .
But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...
Running above command in grub terminal boots my hard disk ("hd1" is my "unbootable disk")
I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.
I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components.My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
I wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a novice in Linux but due to my academic requirement I had to install Linux (Fedora 8). I have 2 hard disk's (80GB & 20GB), on the first HD which is 80GB I have Windows XP and the other one I partitioned and installed Linux. Now the first problem is that, whenever I start my PC I get a error which says "GRUB hard disk error", however when I restart the machine it's fine and gives me the boot options.
Secondly, the HD containing windows was affected by virus so I had to format & reinstall XP. Strangely after that I am not getting any boot options and it's like windows is the only 1 OS running. But on windows the partition on which Linux is installed in intact. So I assume something is deleted maybe the Linux boot file.
Its basically an old SATA Hard Drive with a Windows XP partition I was trying to sell.When my computer does the BIOS checks, it doesn't pass the SMART test (but I can boot it anyway), although I can't boot Linux in any way with this Hard Disk connected (I even tried Live CD distros, like Parted Magic).I can boot the XP partition from inside the disk, although I guess its pretty close to not being able to. Is there any way to "fix" this Hard Drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu on my PC. I have found a hard disk with XP on it and put it in the PC because I wanted to make a dual boot configuration. I've already modified menu.lst. The problem is that when I choose from grub menu to start XP, it shows 'Starting up ...' and nothing happens. If I choose to boot ubuntu (sda), it boots ok. Well this happens if in BIOS boot priority is given to ubuntu' hard disk. If it's given to hard disk with XP on it (sdb), it loads normally (from its own mbr) but obviously there's no dual boot option.
I added this at the end of menu.lst:

How can I make an operating dual boot configuration?
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted.The hard disk with the problem is:

I installed an OS on the second hard-disk/partition3 (/dev/sdb3; OS was FreeBSD). Added the entry and when i boot: nothing. I choose the OS from grub's menu, the list of choices vanishes, the background image stays, and there it hangs. It hangs until i hit: ctrl+alt+backspace. I have thought: to hell with it, and installed Debian/Lenny. Same problem (OH!).
I also installed the boot-loader to the second disk (/dev/sdb), hit F11 after the BIOS-screen and chosen the second hard-disk to boot from: a similar problem. It hangs, and the keyboard is "dead". I am clueless what to check for (i checked the general culprits, but with UUID its all a bit of a mess. I would say it looks good, but wouldn't bet on it) Anyone ever heard of something like that? Without error message its not easy to use the amazing Google. I do a bit of grub-troubleshooting, usually it works, but usually i get error-messages.
