Ubuntu :: Disable Built In Mic In Dell Latitude E6400

Apr 22, 2010

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my Dell Latitude E6400. Everything works great except that I cannot disable the built in microphone. I have even disabled from the BIOS but the mic continues working, this is really annoying as I do lots of calling from this computer for my work.

I have played around with the alsamixer and the sound preferences but I haven't been able to disable it or at least lower its volume.

My headset is plugged in to the mic jack and it works fine. The problem is that both the headset and the internal mic are working at the same time.

Fedora Hardware :: External Monitor Not Detected - Dell Laptop - Monitor

Aug 17, 2011

My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.

My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

Code:

How can I get my laptop to recognize that the external monitor is even connected? Let me know if I can be more specific or provide additional details.

OpenSUSE Install :: Windoze Driver From Dell's Site Dell Inspiron 5160?

May 24, 2010

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.

The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom BCM4312 Dell Studio - Built In Wireless Card - 'disabled' And No Longer Works

Jun 10, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).

All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.

The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g

I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?

The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

General :: Toshiba Tecra M2S With NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 Driving Dell External Monitor Quits Working

Mar 29, 2010

I've been trying to get it to work on my laptop off and on for several years now, experimenting first with Redhat (version 6.1, I think) and now trying with Ubuntu 9.04. I've done a full install using the entire hard drive (no dual boot). So I'm trying it for real this time. I'm having a problem with my video drivers. The video is ok (not great) and I don't seem to have any options to adjust it.

When I go into system > preferences > display, I see monitor "unknown", set at 1024x768 with a 75 Hz refresh. If I click on "detect monitors" nothing happens. It says under system > administration > hardware drivers that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've got two options:

For the first part of boot, I have access, but then when it comes up into Ubuntu, the big monitor (a Dell 2500, I think, plugged into the stock Toshiba docking station via DVI) quits working, and all I have is a dim picture (dark, like something's sapping power from it) on the laptop display.....

Slackware :: BigDesktop ATI AGP WITHOUT Driver (just Kernel Mod Built In)

Jan 23, 2010

I read over the X11 acceleration in this forum but I'm not having issues with acceleration - running slackware 13 with built in ATI AGP stuff in kernel. Glxgears is putting out what I would expect for a 9600 pro (2500 FPS in the little window). I haven't needed you guys for a very long time but I just formatted Ubuntu (was getting on my nerves) and installed slack 12 on my hp netbook and 13 on my old desktop without a hitch - except this

I NEED BIG DESKTOP! I've searched, I've read, I've wondered! What's the normal setup in xorg.conf for bigdesktop WITHOUT the ATI driver (I ran the driver after building a custom kernel and the installer crashed with "Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version" - I think I should of renamed my kernel path and setup differently or something)? Is BigDesktop ONLY supported with the driver? I know now that the driver wont work for my system - How do I enable bigdesktop with the open source driver I built in?

Debian Configuration :: Kernel Driver Support: Built-in Or Loadable?

Jun 26, 2010

Is there a way to programmatically determine whether a particular driver support is built-in rather than a loadable module? I'd be grateful if somebody would share how. I have written a shell script using the RTC (real time clock). I can check whether the rtc-cmos kernel module exists and load the module accordingly as needed, but I don't know how to determine when the driver is built-in. Of course, if the driver is built-in then the module does not exist.

I seem to recall there is a method to query the kernel config file (/proc/config.gz), through which I probably could grep for the CONFIG_RTC_DRV_CMOS parameter. I also can check whether /proc/driver/rtc exists. If that file exists then either the driver is built-in or the module was loaded.I realize the rtc-cmos driver is built-in with the standard Debian kernel build, but I still would like a way to query where the driver is supported. Is there a straightforward or direct method to query the kernel whether a particular driver is built-in?

Debian Configuration :: NVidia Driver Fails With Built Kernel?

Jul 30, 2011

I've posted here before (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66322) about problems arising from my attempts to get an nVidia driver to work with my custom kernel. Now those problems are all fixed, and I'm back to where I was: the built kernel boots fine, but the nVidia driver fails.

The custom kernel is as near to the stock one as I can make it, I'm just trying to find a working build process at present, before trying to build a later-version kernel.

I used sgfxi with "-! 40" to build the nVidia driver for my custom kernel; it reported that everything was fine.
