Ubuntu :: How To Configure The Built In Tablet Driver
May 22, 2010
I installed Ubuntu today, and to my great pleasure i found that my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet worked as perfectly as when the windows driver is freshly installed. Unfortunately, i installed no driver, and therefore can find no way to configure my tablet.
What i need configured is the tablet proportion (i have two screens, so the mouse moves too fast in the X direction compared to the Y direction) and what the pen buttons do in different programs. The wrong button is currently right click.

There has been a lot of effort invested in getting external USB connected anything to work well during the connect then disconnect processing. It seems that there are troubles with OEM serial digitizers like those built-in for a tablet-PC. The built-in OEM devices do not have the same sort of connection events to trigger device creation and configuration.
Does anyone know how to make all of the find-hardware then create configuration processing visible? While I find several postings that describe "... edit xorg.conf ..." but then those edits don't want to work with the recent evolution in Xorg and X11-server configuration that deprecates (abandons?) xorg.conf. Does anyone understand what is going on with Xorg and X11-config to help me get my tablet working? Has anyone used an external USB tablet, then adapted those configuration details to get an OEM tablet working? I know that every tablet is different, but if the external device connect-creates-config process works best, it seems there might be value here.

I've got this Medion graphics tablet that I somehow managed to get working with on Karmic, however when I updated to Lucid Lynx, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the damn thing reconfigured to work. To be honest, I don't even remember how I did it last time, and all of the stuff I've read so far regarding compiling just give me an error:
./xf86Wacom.c:545: error: too few arguments to function 'InitValuatorAxisStruct'
Quick info:

EDIT NOW ON KARMIC KOALA.

I have a wacom graphire3 tablet and two monitors. The tablet is workin properly with out of the box drivers.
As well as the dual monitors configured as twinview through Nvidia X server. But the tablet is mapped for the two screens, then I searched the forums for a proper configuration and it it tells me to edit the xorg.conf file for twinview horizontal but, it don't make any difference. I've "sudo gedit" edited the xorg.conf and nothing happens. Nothing, the tablet is working properly, the system is stable and it's still mapped for two screens.
What can I do? The xorg.conf also isn't listing all my hardware, I can't see the confs for my mouse. I'm on karmic koala.

I m on ubuntu 10.04 and have a Trust tb 4200 tablet.. and having problems with my trust tablet runing on ubuntu.. i pluged in the tablet and to my amaze it started working right away until i pressed the pen on the tablet.. i cant seem to move the mouse curser anymore unless i touch the pen on the tablet. (wich acts as a click) so i thought that i may be missing the drivers.. i checked thes forum and there was a post to install the aptek drivers which i did (but still worked the same) and i found out thet there was no 10-aiptek.fdi (in "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/") so i created one and copied one from a post.. in [url]...3&postcount=50 but still cant move the courser without touching.. its like if it did no diference at all.. i also changed the values in the 10-aiptek.fdi with no changes.. the size of the tablet is just the size of the screen so i am using the full tablet.. and no buttons work...
I think the drivers are not workin.. in the synaptic it shows as intalled...

I have noticed they sell digital writing tablets that have the ability to show the pen strokes both on the tablet's display and on the computer's monitor at the same time, and I think they are called LCD digital tablets and they serve as both a second computer monitor AND a writing tablet combined in one, such as the Wacom Cintiq, and must be connected both by USB as well as with a VGA/DVI port, and you have the ability to open up a drawing application directly from the tablet such as Paint where you can draw or write on the tablet's display. And you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. Then you save the results to a JPEG file, for example.
But I do not want a digtal tablet quite as elaborate as that. I am looking for something similar to the credit card terminals used in stores where you can sign your name directly on the display after swiping your credit card, and you can see what you are writing as you write. Then your signature shows up on a paper receipt later. Do they make digital tablets like that for the home user, and if they do, would they have to hook up to the VGA/DVI port on your video card? What are they called and where can I get one?
I've searched several online stores but they do not say if you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. I already have a Wacom tablet in Linux but you can not see what you are writing on the tablet. I have to keep looking up at my computer's monitor to see what I am writing and proficiency is reduced as a result. And again, I do not want a tablet as elaborate as I described in my first paragraph. I want something simplier, such as the type used at a credit card terminal.

I'm trying to add a webcam and it get's registered nicely. The problem is that after a reboot it registers as card 0, my internal card gets registered as card 1, and I lose all sound.
arecord -l without webcam:
Code:
card 0: default [PnP Audio Device ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[code]....
C-Media is the built-in soundcard and Philips is the webcam.why the built-in is registered as an usb-device but it is and external sources confirm that this is correct. According to the alsa project wiki the correct way to give two devices using the same module (such as two usb-devices) a specific index is to add something along the following in the main alsa configuration file.
Code:
options snd-usb-audio index=1,2 vid=0x0ccd,0x0d8c pid=0x0028,0x000c
As I use Debian Squeeze 64-bit with the odd package from sid and multimedia repository enabled I found that the correct file to add this in is /etc/modprobe.conf. I therefore added this:
Code:
options snd-usb-audio index=0,1 vid=0d8c,0471 pid=0201,0333
This corresponds to my hardwares' VID and PID. When I reboot I and do arecord -l I get:
Code:
arecord: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
As an alternative I tried to add this snippet to /etc/modprobe.d/sound instead but at boot I get the message that "vid 0d8c" is an invalid parameter. Well, it's not. It adds upp with the output from lsusb and the external source linked to above. Do I need to add that arecord -l tells me I have no soundcard?

I want to get this pen tablet (not tablet computer) to work (for drawing in kolorpaint / krita / gimp etc)
Omnipen OP-906 (ancient mid-90's device). It came with floppy with drivers for Windows 3.11 and old Mac Plugs into ttyS0 (com1. It has "tablet mode" and "mouse mode". It is meant to always start in "tablet mode", but if I give it a small power interruption (take out the AC plug from the wall halfway and quickly plug it back in), it sometimes kicks into "mouse mode". The original driver is supposed to be able to switch the modes

I read over the X11 acceleration in this forum but I'm not having issues with acceleration - running slackware 13 with built in ATI AGP stuff in kernel. Glxgears is putting out what I would expect for a 9600 pro (2500 FPS in the little window). I haven't needed you guys for a very long time but I just formatted Ubuntu (was getting on my nerves) and installed slack 12 on my hp netbook and 13 on my old desktop without a hitch - except this
I NEED BIG DESKTOP! I've searched, I've read, I've wondered! What's the normal setup in xorg.conf for bigdesktop WITHOUT the ATI driver (I ran the driver after building a custom kernel and the installer crashed with "Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version" - I think I should of renamed my kernel path and setup differently or something)? Is BigDesktop ONLY supported with the driver? I know now that the driver wont work for my system - How do I enable bigdesktop with the open source driver I built in?

Is there a way to programmatically determine whether a particular driver support is built-in rather than a loadable module? I'd be grateful if somebody would share how. I have written a shell script using the RTC (real time clock). I can check whether the rtc-cmos kernel module exists and load the module accordingly as needed, but I don't know how to determine when the driver is built-in. Of course, if the driver is built-in then the module does not exist.
I seem to recall there is a method to query the kernel config file (/proc/config.gz), through which I probably could grep for the CONFIG_RTC_DRV_CMOS parameter. I also can check whether /proc/driver/rtc exists. If that file exists then either the driver is built-in or the module was loaded.I realize the rtc-cmos driver is built-in with the standard Debian kernel build, but I still would like a way to query where the driver is supported. Is there a straightforward or direct method to query the kernel whether a particular driver is built-in?

I've posted here before (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66322) about problems arising from my attempts to get an nVidia driver to work with my custom kernel. Now those problems are all fixed, and I'm back to where I was: the built kernel boots fine, but the nVidia driver fails.
The custom kernel is as near to the stock one as I can make it, I'm just trying to find a working build process at present, before trying to build a later-version kernel.
I used sgfxi with "-! 40" to build the nVidia driver for my custom kernel; it reported that everything was fine.
With stock kernel - 2.6.32-5-amd64 ...

My daughter just broke her laptop screen. I can order another LCD - no problem, but until then she wants to use an external monitor. With Windows, this used to be no big deal, because I would hook up a monitor, hit a key combo on the keyboard, and everything would come up on the other monitor.I know how to do this using the GUI, but unfortunately, I can only see about a 2 inch strip at the top of her computer. I can see the gnome menu bar, and when I go into the Nvidia configuration, I can't make out anything below the tops of the two monitors it detects. (I was able to get it to detect both displays, but I can't see to press the "configure" button.)What I need to do, is configure the new monitor from the command line using the two inches of visible monitor that I have at the top of her broken LCD.

I'm trying to configure my network card using the b43 driver. I'm running 10.04.2 on the kernel version 2.6.35-25-generic-pae.
Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home wireless network using the b43 driver without a problem. The only issue is that it doesn't automatically connect. I have to use the following command in order to get it to work:
Code:
After typing my password, I wait for 10 seconds and am automatically connected. My question is, how do I configure my system to do this for me permanently (or at least automatically) so I don't have to type it every time I log on?

After struggling with a bad LP cable I have finally proven that the cable, printer and port all work. I booted in to another OS and was able to finally print. Now, I'm trying to get server 10.4 to recognize the printer and then I want to configure CUPs so I can run this machine as a headless print server, among other things.
Apache is running as I managed to get nagios to run and I can pull it up from another PC via a browser.
sshd is running as I'm logged in from another PC via ssh.
Problem number 1 is how do I install a driver for an NEC Superscript 870 printer? As it is lpstat returnes with :
karl@zeus:/etc/cups$ lpstat -t
scheduler is not running
no system default destination
Once I am able to print then I need to print to the server from other hosts on the network.

which linux distro should be used on a tablet pc. Some of them may seem unrelated, but they are not. I am looking to buy a very thin, very lightweight tablet pc, just like the ipad. However, I can not get the Ipad itself, because it does not have a USB port, and I must have at least one USB port on the tablet.
1. Which linux distro would you install on a tablet pc, (such as the ipad or archos 9) and why? I would like to be able to run a windows OS, simply because that is what I am accustomed to. But alas, I can not. The perfect tablet for me was canceled for this very reason. The HP "Slate". As was the Microsoft brand "Courier" tablet. They were both going to run some lighter weight version of Windows 7, but even that drained the battery so fast that HP ended up canceling the product. So I have to come up with another good OS, that is very lightweight. I really like the look of Kubuntu. Is there any reason I shouldn't install Kubuntu on my tablet PC?
2. Is there a linux mobile? You know how they have windows, mobile, and apple has their little mobile mac OS? Is there a linux mobile type of GUI OS that Would be beneficial to a tablet? Or is linux so conservative on resources, that I could install a full linux OS on a tablet PC such as the joo joo or ipad?
3. Would the system requirements of Kubuntu/Ubunutu/any other distro be easier on a tablet PC's resources than some of the other available OS's for tablets? Do I even have that part right? I am assuming that I can get a full OS on a tablet if I just use a linux distro. But it has to have all the goods. Such as...everything. All the stuff that you would come to expect from a good, full OS. Not some hacked off, scaled down version made to just barely work, so you lose a lot of functionality. 3-D games excluded, of course. I am talking about good touch screen support, good wireless network support, Bluetooth, 3G, webcam, the works.
4. Do you think that apps from Google's android OS would work on Ubuntu/Kubuntu? It is linux based, supposedly. So therefore maybe some of the apps might work?
5. Why are there so many versions of Kubuntu? For example: Right now, 9.1 is available. But they are working on 10.01. So uh... what are you missing out on by just keeping kubuntu 9 and not upgrading to kubuntu 10? I am used to windows, where any updates are free through "Windows Update". So can you just update from kubuntu 9 to kubuntu 10 without having to wipe your hard drive and install a new OS? How does all that work? How does kubuntu/ubuntu differ when it comes to the update process? I don't want to be behind and miss out on new functionality, but at the same time I don't want to have to wipe my hard drive and install the latest version of the distro every year and a half or two years. Can't you just continually update like with windows? I don't think that you can, cause all the linux distros that I have tried, have all said something like "This distribution will be supported until 9/9/99" or something like that. That is a fake date, but you get the idea. They have an expiration date, and if you want all the latest and greatest goodies, then you need to update to the newest version of the distro. I just don't understand how the update process works with linux, at all.
6. And a last, seemingly unrelated question. Do the Android phones do the whole jailbreak thing? Can they become like little wireless routers like the iphone can? This may also be a reason to use google's android OS on my tablet.
