Debian Installation :: Install Live To A 4 GB Flash Drive?
Apr 12, 2011I am trying to install Debian Live to a 4 GB flash drive. I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!

Oct 24, 2015I am trying to install Debian onto an IBM ThinkPad 240X. The 240X will only boot from either an internal IDE hard-drive, or an external floppy-drive. For now, I have decided to ignore the option of using the floppy drive. I have other computers to support the process, an IBM ThinkPad T43p (Pentium M) as well as my primary laptop, a ThinkPad X200s (Core2 Duo). I have tried installing the hard-drive to be used into the T43p, then booting the Debian NetInstall from a USB thumb-drive, installing as usual, then transferring the hard-drive into the 240X. This does not completely work; GRUB and LILO will load, but the computer freezes very early (almost immediately) in the boot process.
Please note, I am trying this on a CF card. The 240X has an IDE-CF adapter, and my X200s has a USB-CF reader.So, I want to try to load the actual Debian Net Install on the 240X. Ideally, it will happen something like this; I will partition the hard-drive into these 2 partitions:
sda1: the Debian Net Installer
sda2: an empty partition waiting to have Debian installed onto it URL...
but the part I do not understand is how to get GRUB or LILO installed onto the CF card. I am wary of running commands such as "grub-install" as I do not want to mess up my GRUB install on the computers this command would be run from. If I run a command such as this, I would want it to ingore everything about the computer it is being run from, and only modify files or install onto the CF card. I would not want it to acknowledge the computer it is being run from as far as available installs, architecture, etc.

I've recently tried to installed Debian 8. The problem is that the partition menu gives me these 3 options:
1. Configure iSCSI volumes
2. Undo changes to partitions
3. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk
There are no options for defining partitions or any hard drive during installation. After searching the internet i found that the problem because the solid state disk SSD cache. How I install a Debian 8 with computer which has a hard disk drive and a solid state disk cache.

May 9, 2011I have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.
I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.
On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?
The computer specs are:

I would like to include current source packages on the same dive so if I don't have internet access at time of install, can can still install what I need.I know with Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can get this but how can I do this with Debian?

May 8, 2011If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
Ubuntu Installation :: Booting 11.04 From Live Usb - System Does Not See Hard Drive
May 21, 2011I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.
Debian Installation :: Computer Hangs After Install On External Hard Drive With Flashing
Apr 4, 2016I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410
I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.
It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...

May 8, 2011I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.

An actual hard disk install of full featured Linux to a portable USB Hard Drive. I want to be able to plug in the USB HHD and go Linux. (Why you might ask? Fair enough. The laptop is my wife's computer and she says absolutely no to Linux.

May 12, 2010i just burnt a debian lenny 504 live disk. i don't think there's a way to install it to hard drive. i just did a google search and it appears that the latest debian lenny 504 cannot be installed to hard drive with the live cd. from what i have read, i need to get a "netinstall" iso (this is new territory for me). can anyone supply me with a link for an iso with a hash verification? i would be most grateful. the disk i had previously must be corrupted because the install quits at 5%.

Oct 28, 2015I'm trying to create a persistent live Jessie system on my 8GB USB drive.
If that matters, I'm currently on an Arch Linux system, and I partly followed what's on the relative wiki (Pages Create a new MBR for a USB stick, Manually create a USB flash installation and Install Syslinux), plus a CrunchBang post explaining how to make a persistent live USB out of any Jessie-deriving distro (like their BunsenLabs Hydrogen).
The problem is, even if Debian boots up more than fine, the system isn't persistent at all.
Here's what I did (I know some passages are redundant, but still...):
Downloaded the Cinnamon flavor of Jessie via torrentErased the old MBR

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install/boot From Live Cd Or Flash Drive
Aug 17, 2010I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.
cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)
EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...
OpenSUSE Network :: WD Live Cannot See USB Hard Drive On 11.3
Oct 4, 2010I just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

Jun 24, 2010For some reason, Ubuntu 10.4 LTS cannot boot normally, so I have reverted to a live CD, no concern, I can just reinstall, what I am concerned with is the fact that I get my music. I load up the live CD, and I am able to access my hard drive, but I as I found my music folder, I cannot copy and past and/or move ANY folders into a flash drive. It says I do not have permission.

Sep 18, 2015I have got a 1TB USB hard drive, which I partitioned to be 500GB NTFS and on the other half I installed Debian 8.1.0. During graphical install I selected to install the bootloader not to the MBR but also to the external drive. After completing the installation I wanted to boot into Debian, but it just started Windows, which is installed on my internal. Even after choosing the USB drive in the boot menu, Windows booted. I later installed the bootloader to my internal, then I could boot into both Debian and Windows, but only if my hard drive was plugged in.

Feb 20, 2016I have a 2TB external Hard drive that nonetheless is being used for booting Debian off of. I have downloaded the "debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso" and have extracted it to my external hard drive. The letter assigned to this drive is "I". When I shut it down and enter the boot settings, it asks me for a name and a path for a new boot option. I have tried many different paths including:

I renamed the original Debian download (debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso) to "debian" so I didn't have to type the long file name into the path. When I type in "I:debian.iso" as the path and restart it pops up with a grub prompt, in my mind that tells me that some part of the debian.iso file is corrupted.
Specs:
Dual Core i5-3317U, 1.7 GHz, Turbo boosted
8GB RAM
1TB Internal Memory
64-bit OS and processor
Windows 8.1 Default OS

May 1, 2010Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Feb 20, 2010I've got a computer where Comodo Time Machine totally wiped out the hard drive..Now when I try to boot up it says I have a registry problem..K, I thought I might be able to save my files, etc., by installing Ubuntu 9.04 to recover them..I put in the disk and Ubuntu booted up fine..I first tried to run Ubuntu without any changes to the computer..It keepsscrolling, fast at first then slows down and it says things like 1238.50734 sr 1:0:0:0:[sr0] Add.Sense:No seek complete or the number and beside it buffer I/O error on device sr0 logical block..The numbers started out in the 600's with basically the same thing but with logical block 321537..I tried to do an install, and it did the same thing..Does anybody know what this is and is there a fix or am I just spit out of luck and my hard drive is nrecoverable..I just did the check disk for errors and it found errors in 2 files.

I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

Ubuntu :: Copy Files From Hard Drive With Live CD?
Mar 14, 2011I'm mostly a linux-idiot but I tried to get an update for a laptop that was running xubuntu. Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?
