I've installed F10-live.iso onto a usb key but am having problems with the non-privileged user I created. When I login as kurt, I do not have access to my home directory on the hard drive. I tried [root@localhost home] #chmod kurt kurt (after cd-ing to the correct spot), but still cannot access my files there. I can do so as Live System User, but not as me.

What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. View 10 Replies View RelatedI have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.
I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.
On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?
The computer specs are:
Processor: AMD phenom II X2 555
Motherboard: Asus M4A88TD V-EVO
Memory: G-Skill Ripjaws 4GB Dual channel
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 200GB
If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.
I tried to use Grub to boot the Fedora 14 Live CD from its ISO image (SHA256 verified) on the hard drive. I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an old EIDE hard drive that used to be used for a dual-boot WinXP and Linux (not sure what version - either RH9 or FC1), and I'd like to pull some data off it. That computer died, and I reformatted the Windows partition, but left the Linux portion alone. My current Linux (FC10 + XP) computer uses a SATA hard drive, and I'd like to get the data from the old drive to the new one. I've connected the hard drive normally, jumpered as a slave drive. Linux now boots normally, but I can't access the older hard drive. I tried the techniques in the following thread: [url] and commented there (with more info), but I thought I would be more likely to get a response by starting a new thread.
Here's a summary of what happened: ran "fdisk -l": the command saw both hard drives ran "tail -f /var/log/messages" and got the following: Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3 FS on sdb8, internal journal Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost kernel: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Jul 30 16:00:44 localhost hald: mounted /dev/sdb8 on behalf of uid 500 sdb8 was a FAT partition I had set up for moving files back and forth between XP and Linux (none of the other partitions were reported). ran "vgscan", which only returned one volume group When I ran FC10's Local Volume Management tool, it sees the hard drive and its partitions, but reports them as "Uninitialized Entities".
This probably isn't the best way to go about this, but I am pretty nooby. I took the hard drive with Ubuntu install and made it the second SATA drive, and then put a new SATA drive in as the first and installed Fedora on it.Now I want to access my files from the Ubuntu drive and put them on the new drive but when I try to access it, I can look at some files but the majority of them (like my music and a lot of my documents) it says that I don't have permission.Is there some way I can get to these files? View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning fedora14 on a dell latitude-d600 laptop and I'm trying to access a 500gb sata external hard drive that is connected via usb. The laptop can see the drive as '500 GB Hard Disk: 524 MB Filesystem' and it's clearly mounted under the '/media' directory. However, when I attempt to read the files on it, I am only able to see the 524mb section of the drive. The external hard drive is an ext3 file system (running fedora13) and I believe it's encrypted.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm using my F11 box primarily for browsing. And I have freakishly low RAM (256). All was good up until recently. Now Im experiencing a lot of HD access with a lot of grinding and HD light flashing at different intervals when going online. I've searched but found no mention of viruses that would do this. I would typically associate this with a lot of downloading, as with software update. However I've disabled this program (since the box was in a stable state for my intended purpose and I did not want to invite new maintenance).
Any ideas what could cause this? It can become so intensive that the mouse is practically disabled and any attempts to close a window take upwards of 15 minutes. I frequently receive the Firefox message that the application has become unresponsive, do I wish to kill the program or wait.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've recently tried installing Fedora 14 on a HP z600 workstation, but I'm running into major stability issues.
I can successfully boot fedora 14 from the live-cd and can perform basic tasks from the terminal and within gnome. However, I sometimes experience hard-crashes when I am browsing the web with firefox. In fact, I can pretty consistently cause this by downloading a relatively large file (~100MB) with firefox. Interestingly though, I don't experience any problems when doing the same with curl.
Furthermore, I run into the same issues when I install fedora 14. Worse, the system seems corrupted when it recovers after rebooting... sometimes failing to make it to the login screen.
I'm suspicious of the network driver, but also of the memory. I have performed the memory test included on the live-cd, but it reports no issues. This may be so, but from previous experience with computers, I don't trust memory tests to detect all memory issues.
Ubuntu is similarly problematic; vista appears fine, with limited testing.
*Hard-crash: system locks up for 5 or so seconds, followed by a black screen, and then reboots. There are no error messages displayed.
EDIT: As a point of reference, Fedora 11 seems to be a stable for me.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

Basically, I tried using the F10 live CD to setup Software RAID 1 between 1 hard drives for redundancy (I know its not hardware raid but budget is tight) with the following table;

I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions

I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have

The disk I obtained from a seller runs fine in live mode (no installation) on my Windows XP. I liked what I saw. However, when trying to run cd live on my Linux PC it won't run. Linux pc currently has Kubundu 9.1 installed. Previous to that I had Mint 8 installed, but again Fedora 12 cd would not run. After getting an initial Fedora startup screen, I next receive a bunch of text, ending with a text screen of about 30 lines with "OK" in green to right of each line. At bottom is blinking cursor. That ends my machine's live running of cd.
Obviously, if I can not get cd to run live on linux pc, I'm not going to be able to install. (I should add that ubuntu, kubuntu, mint 8 and pclinuxos all ran successfully live on machine and three of them were installed successfully.) Perhaps, Fedora is at war with Ubuntu et al.
Is there a way to install grub2 from a linux live cd when linux isn't installed on any of the partitions? I'm setting up a multiboot partition for someone and I don't want to install linux anywhere on the computer since hard drive space is running short.

I've only got one hard drive so I can't simply unmount and repartition from gparted, I've lost all of my random linux live cds, and can't find a spare blank optical disc. Is there a way to boot from directly from the iso or from a flash drive or something?
