Ubuntu :: Root Permissions For Failed NAS Drive Linked Via USB And Live CD

I own a Lacie Network Space (1) which has recently given up the ghost - I looked into getting data recovered from it and it turns out it would cost around 500quid!! After doing some research I've found out that the drive runs linux - SO, I have bought myself a HDD cradle, Downloaded an Ubuntu Live CD, taken the drive out of the network space and mounted it in Ubuntu via USB. All good up til now, I've managed to get the majority of my data off except one folder - my music folder. It has quite a deep file structure (which maybe the issue) but essentially the permissions for the top folder have a padlock and a small cross - this doesn't allow me to even read the files to copy them off. I've now tried the 'chown' command: sudo chown ubuntu /media/ 999GBfilessystem/ openshare/audio

My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?

when you attache a pen drive with windows you can drag from the pen drive to the desk top, and visa versa. with Linux logged in as normal user I can drag files from pen drive to Desktop but not the other way around. my pen drive is TITANIUM and at /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/TITANIUM so I have to use
cp /home/user/Desktop/file /media/TITANIUM as root
If I log in as root I can drag files from pen drive to desktop and also from Desktop to pen drive. is there an easy way to give permissions for normal user. I had a look a groups and it has scanner, printer etc listed ,can I amend groups somehow to enable same permissions for pen drive access as root?

I tried two times to make an new partition (after the FAT partition on it) on my external hard drive with YaST>Partitioner.Fist I had tried ext3 now I have ext2 on it.Both times the partition (or the corresponding folder in /media) was only writeable to the superuser/root but not to a normal user (readable to the normal user). Root is the owner.The FAT-Partition on the same external drive is owned by the normal user who was logged in as I plugged the USB-cable in.I can unmount both partitions als normal user in natilus.1. Can I start nautilus as root to change the permissions?2. What have I done wrong? Should I use an SuSE Live-CD or an CD with an special partitioning-program instead?ng X20) openSuse 11.1 and Gnome 2.24.1 (mostly, 1 account is using KDE) and Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-01.1-pae. "/home" is on an separated partition (as part of an extended partition). I have also 2 NTFS partitions for Windows XP (System and Data), and a FAT, a root (/) and a swarp partition.

My wife's XP has crashed and I need to save files. I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. I can see the root user in the user list, but when I try to switch I can't access it. How I can do it to back up my wife's files. I have Kubuntu 8 and KDE 4.1.

I've got a shared (Windows/multiuser Linux) laptop, and I've got installed World of Warcraft and some steam games in Windows. With steam games, there is (almost) no problems. I've installed steam in Linux, and soft linked the 'steamapps' directory (per-game compatibility is another issue). With WoW, the problem is different. I would like to have almost (but not) all files. Under World of Warcraft, every file and directory must be linked except the Interface directory and WTF/config.wtf file (so every user can play with their own settings and addons). How can I have a mix of linked and not linked files without linking every file? If I link manually every file/dir, when updating from Linux other users and Windows Wow is not updated; when updating from Windows, new files remains "unlinked".

I am trying to replace an old, smaller, and dying laptop hard drive with a newer one, using a USB external drive. I first tried cloning disk to disk with Clonezilla, but it failed after cloning my root, swap, and /home directories it froze when it tried to reinstall grub. After 2x trying, I switched to dd, which I have never really used (I am fairly new to Linux in general). The actual command I used was:

All seemed ok and after approximately 2 hours my 80GB drive had been cloned onto my new 250GB, with dd giving what appeared to be a satisfactory closure summary. I tried to mount and access the drive from my external USB enclosure but could not view it, though the data is there, I believe, as the size and bytes show... The error that Dolphin is giving me is:

I am assuming that my issue has something to do with grub, and maybe specific UUIDs that don't match (?) but I'm not really certain. I have both Grub Legacy 0.9x and the newer Grub 2 installed (Sabayon is already moving over) but I still boot with Legacy, not with the new 2, as I don't know how to switch, and am not sure if I should yet. I thought that dd copied bit for bit, and I added the noerrorï just to try to get it all transferred, so I don't know what went wrong exactly, though something seems wrong with grub and the bootloader, I guess...

Accidentally I changed the ownership of all the directories under / to my own instead of root:root. Now I am unable to use sudo and many bad things are happening. Is there a way to revert the changes or change the permissions again to root:root or make sudo work ?

Im having a serious issue with booting ubuntu 10.04, the issue being it wont boot up at all, after working so well for so long (i suspect some recent dodgy system updates are responsible) so I decided to just reinstall ubuntu from scratch again but wanted to retrieve some important files from my root device. So I am running the live desktop and I can see my previous filesystems under places but cannot mount or open my original root device where the files I want to recover are located, I receive this error msg:"Unable to mount 77 GB Filesystem.

An old machine in our office, running Ubuntu 6.06 all of a sudden will not boot up. I get the following info during boot:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok Booting the kernel
mount: Mounting /root/sda1 /root failed: No such device
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: No such file or directory

I haven't changed anything on the system as far as I'm aware, and I ran some HD diagnostics and everything seems fine. however when I try to mount the drive with the following command:
sudo mount -t ext3 -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt
I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/sda1, missing code
page or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in
syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
I ran fdisk -l and it says the partition type is Linux. The output after running dmesg | tail :

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 on a live boot right now so I can move from files from a hard drive on a computer that won't boot. This is my work computer, which contains about three years worth of accounting and inventory information that I absolutely must recover from the drive. The computer runs one SATA drive, and has no ports for additional drives. Otherwise I have two USB drives connected and an IDE connected through a USB adapter. (The SATA drive will not work through the adapter for some reason). I have absolutely no access to another computer with SATA support.
All the drives mount on 7.04, and I can view the files on the SATA drive - which leads me to believe the drive isn't completely dead. So i'm hoping to move the files I need over to one of the USB drives.
However, i'm getting flags when I move files. -Without- installing Linux, is there a way for me to grant myself permissions to move/copy/delete files on my hard drives? Otherwise, is there a simple way (that won't compromise the data on the drive) for me to re-do the partitions the SATA drive so I can install linux?

Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.
Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.
I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.
No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.
P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4

I have broken my MBR and can now only enter 9.10 with the ubuntu start up cd.when i boot through he ubuntu live cd.I can see my mounted drive with all my files however i do not have the permissions to open or copy some of my files( music, films, pics) . id like to do this so i can transfer all my files to an external HDD and reformat start all over again.error when trying to open files.You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of.

i have this problem and i may need professional help; it appears smb4k made my /etc/sudoers file writable (according to log), hence, any sudo command will coerce this error:
Code: ubuntu@ubuntu~$ sudo any sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting i wanted to boot into recovery console and chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers, but it's a live system - it doesn't have a recovery mode. A bit of an oddity that I've recently run into with my storage folder in my system; it's a newly installed drive that I've set to mount at /storage. When I first tried to use it, programs that I used that attempted to write to it tossed Access Denied errors at me in their own way. Checking the permissions (at the Terminal, ls -l / | grep storage) showed that /storage was set to 'rwxrwxr--'--Owner and Group were given full read/write/execute, but Others could only read. However, my logon to my system is a member of group root. Why, then, with the above bits set, would I not be able to write to it? Changing Others permissions to rwx (and presumably rw would have worked out for me since I don't leave anything executable there) allowed me to write to it, but I don't understand why that would have been necessary. So far as I'm aware, the prior drive that was in my system--mounted at the same location--did not need this treatment.

We have G5 PPC with Mac OS 10.xx (panther?). I need files from it, but we don't have the passwords for the machine, and have no disks with which to recover data or reinstall the OS. So, I used an Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 disk and mounted the drives, but when I try and open the target dir, I get permission problems.

How would I change the permissions for a specific program(xsane)? For some reason Xsane only works now if I run as root. It was working fine before the latest kernel update, now I get "cannot start scanner: invalid argument" unless I run the program as root. Also images that are scanned are nor accessible unless I am root

I use netbeanse as a development suite, but to edit/save file correctly it should run with root permissions. When I do run file or debug them, it launches firefox, but due netbeans have been opened by root user, it tries to open firefox as root also, and it seems to be something that should not do. Either I now upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala and sudo firefox does not work anymore, giving me no errors even from CLI.

I want full permissions for all computers in my house, without having to get up and go to the other room and change permissions for the file, then go back to the other room again.
I just created a partition, as THIS user, THIS machine, rebooted, and cannot create a folder on the partition I just created. UGH. No more of this stuff...

Okay so my iPod auto mounts correctly to /media/IPOD (out of the box). But the permissions are set to root leaving me with no write permissions for syncing. Obviously it works if I sudo rhythmbox and then sync, but it's too much of a hassle and not very optimal (having to re-add the songs you want to sync etc).
So...How do I make my iPod mount with permissions allowing me to read & write? Previously (in 8.10 Intrepid Ibex) it used to auto mount with correct permissions.
Some info that might be worth brining up: This all started after I got my iPod back from Apple Store for repairs. I noticed they had updated the firmware and formated it to HFS+, I told them I wanted it changed to FAT32 and got it changed rather quickly. Is it possible they f'd something up when formatting? If so, how do I correct it?

I installed ubuntu on my MacBook Pro, and now I get the infamous "still waiting for root device" when booting mac os x. I couldn't find any solutions that worked (macbook pros don't have a BIOS, or any drives that are easily removable). Anyway, so I have ubuntu working, and I need some files from OS X before I would consider reinstalling, etc. So I mounted the drive, went to users, etc. and it says that "I don't have the permissions necessary to view the contents of ****".
I did chmod 777 /media/os x/Users/* but that led to "Could not access: No such file or directory" (there's a space between os and x, I think it counts it as two commands or something and I can't rename the drive). Any way to give myself the permissions to access my files, or maybe just to copy over the whole hard drive to my main computer, or maybe somehow solve the "still waiting for root device".

I have been VERY lucky and managed to restore from a formatted ext3 /home/ partition. I used testdisk to reset the original partition which had had nothing done to it since formatting(!). However some of the file permissions are a altered and I cannot change them. I have tried "su chmod" and even temporarily enabled the root account itself and tried to alter the ownership/permissions from root 'proper' without it helping.
Here is an example of the output of ls -l
drwxr-xr-x 2 martyn martyn 4096 (date) (time) sponsors
?-----S--T 63231 92820383 44090688 4286824785 (date) (time) order.xls
The first line looks like a normally formed output and indeed is readable. The second line looks corrupted and I don't have a clue how I can reclaim this - or even if it is possible. Should I count my blessings most of my files are intact and leave those be?
