I am having a few security issues with fedora15. they are like i cannot modify any folder in orher partitions of my HDD unless i am a root user. i have tried the GUI approach bt it doesnt help. there are more than a few hundred folders with thousands of files in total. tell me a way so that i can change permissions for one drive at once.

I'm trying to change the permissions of my external USB drive that i've plugged into my machine. It still reads user root and group root. I've tried chown -R kuier /home/kuiper/file Then chgrp -R users /home/kuiper/file But it still doesn't change permissions. I've also tried editing /etc/group and adding my name to plugdev group. nothing seems to be working?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had an old windoz 2003 server running a few recreational web sites. I've grown tired of all the hacking attempts, FTP floods, etc. Ok.. I've grown tired of windoz period.When I set the server up, I had the operating system on one physical drive and stored all of the web files on a separate physical drive just in case I ever wanted to make some changes to the operating system.in my adventurous ways, I've dumped windoz and installed ubuntu 11, 32 bit server edition on this machine. It is running fine from what I see on the server side. The first problem I've noticed is when even attempting to navigate to localhost through the server's web browser, I get a permissions issue.
So... off to the drive where the httpd.conf file points to. This is the second physical drive. When checking permissions and attempting to change them to the correct ones for the folder, I can't change them. I've tried through the GUI and the terminal as root. Neither way will change the permissions.I've stepped back and checked the permissions on the physical drive the files are stored on. I am having the same issues with the drive itself. How in the world can I change the permissions either on the drive or the folder? Is there something I should do as far as the drive's mounting?
My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.
My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

Every time I try to change file or folder permissions on a separate internal drive in ubuntu 10.10 desktop in sudo file manager, It sets it right back to the way it was before and doesn't save the permissions I want to change it to. The files aren't critical system files that are not even existent on this hard drive.
Its on a completely separate drive, Yet aren't I suppose to be in control of what gets changed to what? Instead of a Operating System doing something just for my safety? A simple AVI files permissions being changed shouldn't hurt anything. How to I stop ubuntu 10.10 from auto setting the permissions of my folders and files? Its really starting to me off right now. I've been looking around on google for Auto reset permissions for ubuntu, Haven't found one word about it. Yet I'm just going to assume someone might know how to resolve this? Or has dealed with this before.
I'm just trying to Forcefully set my folders on my separate drive all to 777 because they are all 775 and 755 and I can only access them with Write privileges if I run the SUDO file manager which I really hate having to do every so often I'm sure you can relate to how annoying it is to have to open up terminal and type something in to open a fully priviledged file manager.

I just upgraded to fedora core 11. I need to change the permission of the html folder. The owner is currently set to root. Since there is no longer a root user (I just found out) it will not let my user account change the permissions in that directory from. How do you change directory permissions in fedora 11?
View 2 Replies View Relatedafter a fresh install of fedora 13 I was expecting a few niggles and here's one, I've googled and read man chmod and chown and there seems to be plenty of conflicting advice, oh yeah the problem, I installed a package called get_iplayer (allows downloading of bbc iplayer content) via yum, only thing is I can only run it as root whereas in f12 I could as a normal user. It's probably the simplest command to change permissions, also I can't find any info on what the different numbers mean (775 777 etc)

When I use Nautilus to access the partition, I am always asked for my root password. This is a little annoying. Is there anyway I can keep this from happening?
I have my Windows partition set up to auto mount with fstab. I can access it fine in the command line and launchers that I created with out the root password. I suppose I could do the same for this partition, but I would like to access it directly with Nautilus if it is possible.

That's the drive I am wanting to mount with full permissions for anyone. Right now the folder only has root permissions. Is there a specific group ID I assign this in fstab so it's automatically mounted with full permissions for anyone who logs in?
I have a Fedora 15/Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot. In Fedora, I just created a new logical volume. How do I ensure that anything I put in it - all files and folders - will be accessible in Ubuntu? II also want to be able to add files and folders in Ubuntu and then read and write them in Fedora...

But when I shutdown Fedora and start up Ubuntu, I have to run the same chmod command again. How can I make read/write permissions endure between both distros?
I've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

I did this in the earlier versions I upgraded from. I would like to either get rid of the other entry or, if easier, make it auto & set permissions but I don't know where it is.

I've changed the permissions on the drives using chmod so the permissions are "drwxrwxrwx". I can even right click within the drive and click "Create New Folder" but then it tells me, "Error while copying to "sdc1". The destination is read-only." I thought the destination permissions were setup so anyone can read/write to the disk? I haven't been using linux that long and have only recently started to feel comfortable to move over all of my stuff to Fedora.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. I have set up an encrypted ext4 partition on a new external USB HDD. When I plug it in, some sequence of a daemons and scripts cheerfully puts up a dialog to ask me for my pass phrase and then creates a mount point and mounts the drive in /media. I'd like to know how to configure this process to change the name of the mount point (right now it's an unwieldy hex string), it's permissions and ownership. I'm sure this is straightforward, but I just don't what the relevant programs and files are.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently have a sever running Ubuntu 9.x (don't remember) and am running a SMF (Simple Machine Forum, free) 2.0 forum on there. I have been using SFTP to transfer files, but SMF has package/mod installer that requires FTP to install the packages. I manage to set up vsftpd and add a new user (that I called SMF) to my system for SMF to use. I am able to log on with fpt as that user, but I only have read access, and I need to configure write access. How do I do that? Vsftpd has the umask configure as 022, and I made the SMF user part of group root. I still can use it. And no, vsftpd will not allow remote root logon, at least from what I can see.

I have a relatively common problem, but I don't seem to identify it's source. I have a SAMBA server on my LAN to which there are mapped a few shares as network drives in windows xp (as Y: ) and mounted as CIFS in linux [as /y]. The problem is that every time I save a file [either windows xp or linux] on the mapped drive / mounted folder, our IDEs alert us that the file changes right after the save. I am running SAMBA 3.3.2.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Debian Wheezy 7 installation. When I turn it on it boots to the log in screen normally. However when I type in my username/password and try to login the screen briefly turns off for about one second and returns to the log in screen. I cannot log in.
This started happening immediately after I changed the owner and permissions for the "/tmp" folder and all of its contained files/directories. This is the only change I made to the system before the problem began. Immediately after I made the change, I rebooted the system and that's when the problem began.
