This is a curiosity of mine, and I expect a technical answer, if someone knows it. Why the systems become so irresponsive when doing hard-disk input and output? This happens even if writing is done to a secondary disk where neither the system or the swap are stored.
View 7 RepliesWhenever I am busy reading or writing large files, or large sum of files, my computer is unresponsive. Screens are getting greyed-out and I just can sit there and wait until the reading/writing is done.
This is not caused by the CPU which is overstressed because it is not. Look at the attachments and you will see the CPU is used for about 20%. When these pictures were captured the computer was using hellanzb to unrar a long list of rar-files.
When you look at my signature you see the computer is not bad at all, just disk-access is slow. I can transfer files with a maximum speed of 30MB/s. Is that normal or is it very slow? I don't know the numbers. I have 2 SATA disks.
O.S. is Mint 9-Isadora, based on Ubuntu 10.04 and I use the 64-bits version.
I have just formated and did a fresh install to start all over. I installed Ubuntu 9.1 and everything went fine but the network. The computer serve as a NAS and MediaPlayer. When getting a file from the server, I get a speed of 40-60mb/sec, which are good for a Gigabit network. When I try to put a file in, the speed can't pass more than 1mb/sec and often stop.

Edit: Looks like it's a Gigabit Problem. I connected the Ubuntu box to my Linksys router which is 10/100 and everything is MUCH faster.
I have a USB hub on my desk, and also a multi-card reader in the front-panel of the computer (connected to a USB PCI card).
I have found that when I write files to a USB "thumb" drive plugged into the USB hub, or to a card in the multi-card reader (I have tried SD, SDHC, CompactFlash and MMC) the file is written quickly. The progress bar that appears on the screen goes to almost 100%, but then stops...
If I try to unmount the filesystem (either umount on the command line, or MB3 and eject or unmount option) I get a message that the device is busy. Sometimes, this stays busy for three minutes.
The filesystems on these cards are almost always FAT32; they are for digital cameras, media players, or are for exchanging files between home and office (where I use WinXP).
Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.
I mount a BD-RE in Debian Jessie to write about 20GB of data. But the writing speed is terrible slow. I get a Speed of 250kb/sec.
Are there any options to increase the speed of writing? I don't use packet writing and no wodim, no growisofs, nothing. I just mounted the disk and I use mc (Midnight commander) to copy the data.
I've just completed a fresh install on natty, and I'm seeing constant disk writes of around 1Mb every couple of seconds.
I looked at iotop to find the culprit, and it seems to be the journalling manager for the ext4 filesystems:

I've tried watching ESPN3 on several systems using F14 with no success. Everything runs very slow and after a few seconds, I get a frozen screen and then a white screen. View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been, for some years, an happy user of Highpoint HPT374 based RAID cards, using RAID 5 with decent performances (constantly around 90 MB/sec in read, and 60 MB/sec in write ). Old Athlon mobo , with 2.6.8 kernel. Now the mobo is dead, so I've got an Asrock A330GC (dual proc with 4giga ram), installed Debian with kernel 2.6.26 and moved the controller and disks , and the performances have dropped to a painful 9 MB/sec in write, measured with dd of a huge file (interrupted with kill -USR1 [pidof dd]).
Read performances are still around 90MB/sec, using hdparm -t , repeated many times , figures are constantly around 90MB/sec. I suspect some libata issue , in old kernel the raid was seen as hdb, now is sdb, some driver(s) of the PATA disks may be responsible. I've used the driver, from Highpoint v2.19 , the latest driver is broken (causes kernel oops during format of raid), I've informed Highpoint.

It frozen up occasionally, when that happens, usually the harddisk light lights up continuously. So I suspect some process is writing to the disk, which prevent other process to go on. how do I find out who's using a lot of IO?

I've got a few linux boxes (fedora 13 and 11) with a common disk mounted. I'm trying to get them all to write files to that disk, however it seems that only the first to connect actually has permission to write.
I'm very new to this networking stuff and this is a bit of a hack. Is there anyway to give all computers write access to a disk (it's actually a managed back up disk, primarily for windows users but is the only shared disk in the building), or is this likely to be very very complicated?
I've got a Centos 5 machine running with a raid 1 SSD hard drive combo, as I don't know how or even if it's possible yet to wipe the free disk space clean I need to be careful to not fill all the free disk space. As I don't want to fill the free disk space too quickly and was wandering if it is possible to pipe the result of a mysqldump to a FTP client only writing it to the ram and not writing it to this disk.
I've done a bit of research on the subject and have found the two following commands:

I would like to combine the two to make something like this:

I haven't actually tried my code as it seems too easy and I'm sure I've got something wrong! If this command is even correct will it prevent the sql file from being written to the hard drive to my local machine?
Im using it in an attempt to backup all of the files off of my dead Windows xp Computer. Right now I am using the 9.10 live disk of Ubuntu and cannot get the program to recognize what kind of file system my internal hard drive is using. (A western digital 320 GB hard drive with partition 1 in NTFS and part2 in FAT32) I would like to be able to back up this drive onto my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive that is also in ntfs.
Now here comes the wierd part, it won't read or recognize my interal and external hard drives that run those file systems but it will recognize and allow me to read, edit, and access all of the ntfs hard drives on my home network. I did some lurking and tried a tutorial for creating a mount point and on how to force mount a disk, but neither of my disks would show up in Places/Computer. So then I checked the /etc/fstab file and is says,
aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
Which I think means that it says I have no hard drives installed or connected to the computer. Yet when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the disk is there and asks if I want to format the disk into ntfs...

After preupgrade downloads install media and reboots to start install, I get a dirty file systems error on /dev/sda2, my / partition.I fsck'd sda1,2,3,4,5,6 (all clean) and rebooted, ran preupgrade again and got same error. No other disks are mounted other than internal SSD.wtf is going on here? ;-)More importantly how does one get around this error? Only half-solution I have found on the net for this problem is to set allowDirty=1 in upgrade.py and recreate install.img. But it is still far too slow. On the other version, I had a custom partition setup, with the home partition with 100GB, and ext3 (and other partitions for swap, boot, root folder and space for a windows partition I never cared to install ).
This time I am using a standard Lynx setup (2 partitions, the swap and the main one with almost 250Gb, using ext4).
Some applications I develop, that use disk for some unit tests, are now very slow to work with. Is there a way to making it faster? Going back to 9.04? Waiting for 10,10? Gparting and making partitions smaller on ext3? I don't know if any of these will work.
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on a relatively old laptop and I find Grub is taking about 20 seconds to initially load before booting the system. The laptop only has a single 120GB hard drive, and I chose the "use entire disk" option when installing, so I do not have any fancy partitioning scheme.When the system boots I get the "LOADING GRUB" text displayed and then shortly after it just shows the flashing cursor with no text, and stays there for about 20 seconds. After that it finally starts loading the system.All the searching I have done only turned up solutions relevant to people with multiple hard drives. This was not an issue on Grub 1.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 as a full install from a USB flash drive. In other words, I've installed to the flash stick just as though it were a normal hard drive. This is not a Live USB/Persistent install.
The drive is an off-the shelf 8GB Gigaware stick, and its read/write performance is pretty slow. Any time I do anything that requires disk access, it's very sluggish and tends to hang.
I'm looking for advice on things I could do to minimize the amount of disk-access made in the course of using the system, so that it will feel snappier and more responsive.
Some things I've done already:Installed 'preload', which is a daemon that monitors what programs you use frequently, and pre-loads them into RAM to reduce startup time. Mounted /tmp as a tmpfs (RAM disk) and moved my Firefox and Chrome browser caches into RAM. Set noatime for my root and home partitions.
Should I be trying to disable the filesystem journal as well? I'm less concerned with potentially burning out the flash drive with too many writes than I am with just making the system more responsive and nicer to use.
One other thing I was reading about is the so-called "Laptop Mode" that appears to be kernel settings to allow you to spin down a laptop hard drive: [url]
Obviously a flash drive doesn't spin, but it seems like some of those same techniques could be helpful here. Is there anyone who has experience running Linux in a situation with a very slow hard drive?
The computers I'm using this flash drive with all have between 2 and 8 GB of RAM, so moving more stuff into RAM is unlikely to be an issue.

I have installed Kubuntu Lucid on my Samsung NB30 netbook. Got everything working, but the disk access seems extremely slow and noisy. Whenever larger files are being processed (software installation), the disk makes a kind of rattling sound - looks like the head is moving back and forth between two or more locations. The disk seems o.k. so far - no io errors under Linux and Windows XP boots without problems.
