Jul 14, 2010
I am using Opera 10.60 browser for the past one month. Generally it use to take about 20 seconds to startup but since yesterday its taking more than 40. I don't know about the exact duration but certainly its taking a lot of time now.

I've been using Opera 10.11 on two different computer systems, two different locations (work & home), and two different Slackware versions (13 & 13.1 current). Opera 10.11 runs very quickly on both. After upgrading to Opera 10.60, I now find that linking to new web pages takes 5 to 10 seconds, but returning to a previous page is almost instantaneous.
I've tried installing 10.60 using slackbuilds and Opera's installer - both give the same results. I've since reverted to Opera 10.11. why it is so slow to open web pages? Opera 10.60 for Win7 works great, so what happened to the Linux version?

Anybody notice a slowdown in their boot times? I have had F11 (64 bit) running for about three days and it is taking twice as long to boot as when I first installed. I have not done much other than configure my wireless printer and change a few icons. I have Compiz cube effects running but I did that right away and it made no difference in my system speed. If anything I thought I should be booting faster after disabling a few things in the start up menu that I dont need.
I went from about a 30 second total boot to almost a minute to the login screen
top - 15:13:37 up 11 min, 2 users, load average: 0.35, 0.24, 0.12

My ubuntu(10.10) installation takes a relatively longer time (90 seconds) to boot. I think part of the problem might be related to an error message during boot related to usb drivers.
Code:
[2.717076] usb 4-1: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
[3.244051] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[12.029046] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.35/drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c: usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed
I have attached the relevant part of dmesg output also.

opera-11.11-2109.i386.rpm
From opera's webpage. Installed with double-click. Asked for root permissions... the standard way of installing. Neither CLI 'opera' nor the GUI's menu -> internet -> opera does anything!

My system clock loses about 10 seconds every minute. The hwclock is fine. I've tried different kernel args (clocksource=acpi_pm, nohz=off, highres=off). None of these have any effect. I am running Fedora 11 with kernel 2.6.30-105.2.23.fc11.x86_64 on an AMD Istanbul node (Processor 2439 SE).

I am having a problem with my Fedora11, I am not sure wether it is software or hardware but this looks serious. My computer is running very slow and freezes up every few seconds. Every time I reboot I would get a kernel failure pop-up.
This is what the message says:

I'm on ubuntu 10.04 32-bit desktop. Somehow Opera 10.60 is very slow to load. I just switched from FF to Opera, and (I'm pretty sure, might be dreaming though) that the first few days it was lightning fast.. and now it takes like 10+ secs to load any page.

I installed Opera 11 a couple of days ago and it is incredibly slow. After entering a url it just sits there with "Document 0%" in the location bar for thirty seconds to a minute, then renders relatively fast. I've gone back to both version 9.xx and 10.63 and they are both faster.

It seems every 30 seconds the internet lags, after that it is fine for 30 seconds. And this happens continuously. Also it seems when I am on Firefox if I am connected to a website, I can navigate the website with not further trouble. But if I navigate away and try to go back, it takes a while. I didn't update, or upgrade or anything. I am running 13.1 and have been since it came out. This just started with the internet 2 days ago. Also I have a dual boot with Win7 and the internet is fine on Win7.

I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx since it came out, and until now it worked fine. I am updating regularly. Today too, I installed everything offered to me by updates manager (I looked through the list and didnt see anything I wouldnt want to update, but I dont remember everything that was there), and it asked for restart. Ok, so I restarted. Everything seemed fine. Then I tried to look at a picture, in normal, default viewer, an huh. It took 3 seconds for the mouse to select the pic, then another about 6 to open the viewer (and we are talking about a 40 KB pic). That was slow, but I thought maybe it was an accident. But no, everything I tried since goes slowly, at about a quarter of speed as before the update. I tried to remove unnecessary things with apt-get autoremove, I tried to stop or end all processes that seemed unnecessary, with no result. I restarted thrice. Nothing comes to mind anymore.

After upgrading to v10.60, Opera will not run from the KDE menu. A entry appears in the taskbar and then disappears without opening any window. The entry for Opera in KDE menu has this command:
Code:
/usr/bin/opera %u
If I open a terminal and type "opera" or navigate to /usr/bin and click on the opera script there, it starts up just fine. Seems like it should be simple to fix, but I have tried various entries in the KDE menu ("opera", "opera %u", "/usr/bin/opera") and this same behavior occurs with any of them.

So i just finally installed Debian Jessie OS, replacing Ubuntu. But now it is running extremely slow. It's not internet connection. The internet speed is running fine (Videos load quickly), but it's like the system freezes every 30 seconds or so. A video can be fully loaded but still stops and starts constantly. Just browsing the internet, or non-internet things do the same also. I switched back to Ubuntu to see if it was different on there, but Ubuntu is running fine.

Clamd on my CentOS latest stable box takes an age to start.s in, well over half an hour. Two clamd processes get started, each of which has a VIRT of about 220m. Load average goes through the roof, values from 6-8+.The server is a bit weedy (190MB RAM, processor I forgot), but I didn't have these problems before. They seemed to arise after running freshclam to update definitions.

I don't know if it is just me but it seems like Ubuntu takes a long time to start up programs. For example, it takes me 10 seconds to start up "Ubuntu software center". My computer is a relatively fast one. It has 4 gb of ram and an intel core duo processor. I didn't install that many programs. Does anyone know what might be the source of the problem and how to fix it?

I installed fedora15 on my laptop. and after an upgrade, with the kernel 2.6.40-4.fc15.x86_64, my fedora boot is taking almost 10 minuts.....Its take so manytimes to boot. does someone knows why?I installed jdk, eclipse, glassfish, firebird and postgres for my workspace.....
---------- Post added at 11:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:55 AM ----------
ok I I figured out why the long time to boot.I have here installed glassfish and I add a Line on /etc/hosts like that:
Code:
[vinny@vinny-fedora ~]$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1localhost.localdomain localhost
#127.0.0.2 vinny-fedora
::1localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
127.0.0.1 vinny-fedora
If I comment the last line, the starting is normal. But without this line I cant start up Glassfish. is there another way to sat my hostname?

As a side note, what is your favorite calendar in GNU/Linux?

configuring TeamViewer to start up 30 to 60 seconds after login.
At the moment, TV starts up straight away at login, but seeing as the wireless internet isn't connected straight away, TV's trying to connect without a connection, which is a problem when the wireless does connect as it will get stuck with 'Activating TeamViewer'.
Obviously, this is a straight forward task, just exit and then re-open TV. But seeing as I want to run a headless server, carrying my monitor and mouse to the server every time I want to activate TV isn't ideal.
The way I did set up TeamViewer to start up on login, was by dragging the icon into System>Preferences>Start-up Applications, so if the solution is to create a script of some sort.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

First of all I want to tell you that I'm not used to working with fedora so don't exlude 'noob solutions' out of your answers.I've downloaded the latest opera from their site and tried to install it. When I did this using the given script it asked me to install it in the base directory /usr/ . I had my doubts but I agreed. (Does it have to be installed in the root directory? / )Now when I trie to run it, I receive the following message:
[Kurt@localhost ~]$ opera
/usr/bin/opera: line 240: /usr/lib/opera/10.10/opera: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/opera: line 240: /usr/lib/opera/10.10/opera: Success

I have an Intel Celeron 2.80 Ghz processor, 1GB RAM, GeForce 8400 512MB video card running Ubuntu 10.04.When I open VLC it takes 15 to 20 seconds to open. I just setup another computer: Pentium III 1.1Ghz with 256MB of RAM with Crunchbang Lite, and VLC opens in less than a second. No problem with VLC on my computer at home.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC but no change. No errors from the command line. What could cause VLC to open slowly on only one computer?

I have had an extremely slow startup (upwards of a few minutes) for awhile now, and nothing seems to work to fix it. Regular boot time is far slower than it should be, and the time of logging in to a workable desktop is just really bad. I will log in, and then I will either get a blank desktop screen for awhile or an all black screen until the desktop will fully load with errors from gnome-panel and AWN not starting up automatically. Some of the fixes I have tried:
Disabling floppy from bios
Downgrading gnome keyring
Removing gnome* and gconf* from the home directory
Putting this script in /etc/init.d
#!/bin/sh
echo "nameserver 0.0.0.0" > /etc/resolv.conf
Here's my bootchart and a link in case the upload has problems http:[url].....
