Fedora :: Nouveau Doesn't Suspend To RAM Properly?
Dec 7, 2009
I just wanted to check, I'm using nouveau on Fedora 12 with the latest updates and each time I wake the machine from suspend, the fan on my XFX 8800GT goes to full speed and stays there. I've read some nouveau stuff and they say that nouveau doesn't control the fan speed, so I think the card is running in a safety mode after wake up where it runs the fan at full speed to be safe. The only suggestion I saw for fan speed and nouveau was to use nvclock to manually adjust the fan but that sounds dangerous to me. I think I'll just go to the closed rpmfusion driver then if this is the case.

On my HP i7 based laptop the latest kernel 2.6.33-147 and possibly Nouveau/X.org seems to have broken suspend. ie If the laptop is suspended then when woke, the screen is dead and networking does not work and I cannot change to a different console. If I boot the previous kernel this behaviour does not occur.

Occasionally when I suspend my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6) it begins the suspend process, but then the fan goes to full speed and my laptop remains in that state until I press and hold the power button to turn it off. The end of the messages log is:

Anyone noticing intermittent problems with the screensaver not kicking in or the display not sleeping? This is in gnome under F11.I have the Power Management Preferences set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and gnome screensaver is configured for 5 minutes idle time.On a regular basis, I'll leave my computer come back anda) the screensaver hasn't kicked inorb) the screensaver kicked in, but the power management features didn't kick in to put the display to sleep. It seems to be an intermittent problem and usually it goes away after I restart X, but then at some point it comes back. In the past, I've gotten in the habit of being logged in for weeks/months at a time but I find that I can't go more than a few hours without logging out and back in or else the screen won't go to sleep.

I've got a "little" problem with fedora 13: dual head with nouveau is not working. gnome-display-properties recognizes two displays and i can configure it (left, right, mirroring, ...) but first display is always in standby. Seems it doesn't get a signal from graphics controller. Desktop seems to work fine (can move the mouse pointer on the other screen into "the black hole"). I use Fedora 13 x86_64.

I have Fedora 11 installed on a system that initially had an ATI 1650 type card. I recently replaced it with a GeForce GT 220. I don't believe there was ever an xorg.conf generated or used with the ATI card. Initially, when I replaced cards and rebooted, I was able to start up KDE or GNOME but with only 2 very low resolutions available(the highest being 800x600). Next I ran Xorg -configure to generate an xorg.conf file. Everything I am seeing in this file seems to make sense. But now, when I startx all I get is a red error box being displayed by the CRT monitor with this message:
Signal Frequency is out of range
FH 30.1 kHz FV 24 Hz
Please Change Signal Timing
The only way I can get my X system back is to go into the xorg.conf file (in the Device Section) and change the driver to vesa. But I still only have 2 very low resolutions available.

Computer is an ACER Power F6, BIOS AMI F6, XPPro installed, C only 80 Gygabites, 2 Gyg RAM, 3000MHZ Pentium4.today I installed 10.0.4 from Canonical 32 bit, all was ok,I followed the suggested dual boot partition and proceedings, which gave XP 44 Gyga and Ubuntu 37 Gyga ,successfully finished install, rebooted and began updating and customizing with great zest as I was really happy about this new version. then I decided to make a break of an hour and thought : 'let's try now the suspend function as i read about it not working properly sometimes'.....so an hour later i tried to revive from suspension, but the pc remains utterly insensitive and black.Tried Del to get into BIOS,F12 to get to boot config,BART PE disk i made for an XP machine in the past, and tried to boot again from the live Ubuntu Cd .....all in vain.I suspect it might be the fact the BIOS was set by me for
1st Floppy
2nd CDROM
3rd HD or PenDrive
as this machine I inherited since a few days dates back to 2006 and has no burner only CD-DVD reader and Floppy is disabled in BIOS.After Ubuntu install the machine stopped for a long time on a black screen with white reading about errors during install, then I reset it and it seemed like a good install anyway.Apart from checking if the HD is still ok,what can I do or try in such a situation?

I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.
I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.
I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.

Built a machine w/ i5-4440 & gtx 960. I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel & xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. Xorg -configure fails, so I added xorg.conf I found online, makes no difference. xrandr can't open display. startx of course fails.
Backstory: My plan was to dual boot sid + stable as fallback with shared partition. First installed stable and whether connected to mobo or gfx card, I couldn't get login on tty, it would just hang on errors. So I installed sid (this time using lvm to hopefully make partitioning easier) and while I get the "failed to load nouveau" errors on mobo, gfx card gives me a login screen.

This is my first post here, so I'm not really sure about what sort of responses I'll get. I'm actually sort of regretting the name I chose cause someone else uses it on another website and I can't seem to change it. But that isn't the real issue, so I'll get to the point.
I've had a problem with my Toshiba L355D running Karmic, and now Lynx, overheating for a while. It doesn't heat up as much as other peoples PC's that I've read about, where I've seen numbers like 100c, but it still is significant. When the computer comes out of suspend the fan setting is at its extreme lowest, and the computer, which has had it's bios updates and the kernel modules set to come on when it loads, don't seem to affect it.
The PC will continue to warm up until it reaches its emergency override when the fan comes on, about 80c, and then the temperature will drop, usually at a low of 50 to 60 if given space to cool and 62 to 72 if it sits on a bed. In windows it runs cool no matter what.
Now I love Linux so far since I converted a year ago, but I'm not happy about this. I can ignore other small things, cause Ubuntu hasn't failed me like how Vista did when it erased itself with disk cleanup or with updates causing it to be unable to start up. I can ignore the netflix problem, and WINE has made things easier in other ways, but this issue is the only one preventing my Ubuntu experience from being great. I've read about suspend bugs where Lynx doesn't suspend, but this isn't that, its that the fan controls don't work until the bios has to step in. I've tried to work with Toshiba Utils and still wasn't able to change it.
Is there a way to force the fan to come back on automatically after suspend? I don't mind it running loud if it protects the machine, I would prefer that it works at all.

In 13.1 I had my laptop set to suspend when the lid is closed and have installed 13.37 now and even though its set to suspend when lid is closed it never does. I am in the power group and if I click on the battery in and choose suspend it will so I have to suspend manually.

I have installed Debian a few days ago and when I close my laptop, it goes to suspend, everything is ok but when I try to awake the screen remains off.
I am using Asus X51RL laptop (made in 2007) and it is NOT a hardware problem, suspend works fine in Windows.

When I close the lid on my Macbook Pro 5,2 running Ubuntu 10.04 nothing happens.. it doesn't turn off the screen, suspend, hibernate or anything. Everything that i've looked at says to change the setting in power management but there's no option there for what to do when the lid closes. I've also checked out gconf-editor and the setting appear to be right in that... so I don't know what the issue could be.

I'm running Debian 8.1 KDE on a 2007 dv6 laptop. Model number is worn off. lol but the specs:
Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.

I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?

I've tried ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora and linux mint. all 64 bit versions. I've also tried to suspend through applications like acpitool. But nothing works. When I click on Suspend, the screen goes blank but the computer is still running. The wireless network adaptor gets disabled for a second and then comes back on. All I have to do is press a key and I get the unlock screen prompt. Basically, suspend works like 'Lock Screen'. I have a HP Pavillion laptop. Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM.

I just tried to install qtparted ver0.4.5 on my computer to help partitioning my HDs.After doing the "configure/make"-sequence (using unsermake, as required), I received following error during compilation:
"qp_libparted.cpp:1751: error: ped_free was not declared in scope",My parted version is 1.9.0-3.7.1 from openSuSE 11.2.My question:
1. Do you know, which other library might contain this "ped_free"-declaration?
2. Any other perted GUI, that might work better (gparted is only available on a live DVD after boot)

I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit. sometimes when i boot the computer, right after the grub loads, a black screen is displayed. It just says my computer's name and "tty1".It lets me enter my username and password. The system takes my password but the black screen remains. For some reason the word "ubuntu" with the loading bar does not appear like it is supposed to in this case. The system does not boot into my destop like it should.
This usually happens 1/4 times when i boot so i didnt pay much attention and would just restart the computer. However just 5 minutes ago i had to boot my computer 12 times to get it to boot into the desktop.
