Ubuntu :: Sometimes Computer Doesn't Boot Properly
Jan 7, 2010
I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit. sometimes when i boot the computer, right after the grub loads, a black screen is displayed. It just says my computer's name and "tty1".It lets me enter my username and password. The system takes my password but the black screen remains. For some reason the word "ubuntu" with the loading bar does not appear like it is supposed to in this case. The system does not boot into my destop like it should.
This usually happens 1/4 times when i boot so i didnt pay much attention and would just restart the computer. However just 5 minutes ago i had to boot my computer 12 times to get it to boot into the desktop.
Tried restarting my netbook with Karmic on it this morning. Got the login screen and an error message as follows:
Install Problem The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly.contact your computer Administrator. Then when I click on my user name the system just comes back to the login screen and the same error message. Does this each time I try to login. Can't get it to boot.
I tried to put Avast on my 11.04 machine, it didn't work, what's worse is that now only one kernel will work properly. any time i try any kernel other than 2.6.38-9-generic(it came with the install CD)the boot process stops at different points but it's during the time that it is starting and stopping processes. oh yeah, i've tried install different linux systems and they all work with what comes with the install cd but when i try to change the kernel same problem.
ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..
I'm trying to install debian on my HP laptop but get the following problem... After the live CD boot screen shows up i go to XFCE > install it loads vmlinuz and init.gz and after that the screen goes blank i tried graphical install, advanced install, advanced graphical install but those too didn't work also i tried all of these from LXDE menu but the same problem My laptop is HP pavillion dv6 its got an ATI radeon graphics card (hope there's no problem with the display) 4GB ram intel core i7 However the cd works fine with my old desktop computer which has no graphics card 256MB ram intel P4 CPU Do i need to set some boot parameters?
I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers. The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.
I know these forums are not about Windows, but I think I'll get better help here than in one of the Windows forums, let me explain, why:A friend of mine has a computer with Windows 7 on it, now it just doesn't boot anymore. I already changed the boot sequence to CD/DVD, but even with the recovery disc, there is nothing happening at all. Now, since I use Ubuntu 11.04 personally, I thought 'why not try Ubuntu Live'. There's this one second where the purple screen came up (this only happened once), then it's black again and then, 3 minutes later, this is what comes up:
Code: udevadm settle - timeout of 180 seconds reached, the event queue contains: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0.0000:01:05.0 (933)
I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.
One hour ago I had a nice computer running Ubuntu 9.10 and I ran the update manager and clicked on update to 10.04 LTS distrubution. Now the computer wont boot! I get this message:
init: plymouth main process (3083) killed by SEGV signal init: plymouth-splash main process (477) terminated with status 2
... and after that nothing happens unless I hit Ctrl-alt-delete. the rest of my family is lining up for a chance to punch me. Yes, I have googled around and I see that I'm not alone about this but how the heck can I get the computer working again? I have a rescue partition so I can boot up another installation on the same machine
I had put a second Sata hard drive in my computer and was pleasantly surprised not to run into any problems. No BIOS changes, just start the partitioner, partition, mount, it worked. And then... my computer didn't boot today.I disconnected the new hard drive and it went a little bit further, allowing me to log in as root and remove some lines in /etc/fstab. After that, it booted without any issues.I then remembered that the new drive was /dev/sda and the old drive /dev/sdb. I assume this is the reason for not booting, there is no GRUB on /dev/sda. How do I fix this? Can I simply plug in the cable for the new drive where the cable for the old drive was?
I had switched over from Windows to Ubuntu and got rid of windows completely but still had the recovery partition and deleted it. I then tried to add that space to another partition, "Media." For whatever reason it deleted the "Media" partition so I used TestDisk to restore it. I did something wrong and when I rebooted my computer it would not boot so I used my LiveCD to check whats wrong and it had deleted all of my partitions and Ubuntu was nowhere to be found. So I used TestDisk again to recover them, this time it was successful. when I start my computer it does not boot into Ubuntu it just shows a black screen with the white underscore ("_") flashing in the corner. I'm not sure but I don't think it is booting into the correct partition, I think it would be trying to boot the first partition, /dev/sda1, rather than /dev/sda3. If this is the problem how could I fix it? I got all the boot loader information, here it is:
there are different methods for securing based on home versus professional computers. My questions generally pertains to securing home desktops, but professional protection is definitely welcome :) Knowledge is power. Ever since moving to the wonderful world of Linux a couple years ago, I never even really thought about security. Seeing as most low-life scum make viruses for Windows machines seeing as they're more abundant. But how do I know if I'm safe/secure from anyone who want's to get at me or my stuff. I know that anyone who is determined enough to get in will, there's no question about that. But what steps can I take to ensure I'm protected from things like rogue root shells and automatic attacks? Also, is there a sort of built-in firewall/antivirus in more Linux distros?
I know this question is quite broad seeing as there are tons of ways someone could compromise your system, but maybe you could share what you did to make sure you were safe.I decided to not allow root login via ssh and to change the port is listens on to something random. Hopefully this a step in the right direction. Currently looking at iptables and shutting down services.
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
Many times it happens that when i shut down ubuntu 10.04 at that time it keeps on showing that screen which displays "Ubuntu" written & below it 5 dots. I waited for 15 minutes than also it keeps on showing that.I have to use hardware restart button in such case. What should i do?
Sometimes when I log on, I find that the theme (specifically the window borders and icons) didn't load properly, and that I instead get a set of grayish window borders (Raleigh, I believe) and the gray GNOME icons. Sometimes the window borders corrects itself, but the icons stay the same. Reloading compiz doesn't help, and the only solution I found was to logoff/logon.
I can't seem to install tofrodos on my Lucid box. Both dos2unix and unix2dos is missing - I don't have the todos and fromdos folders in /usr/bin/ either. I've tried the following but it doesn't work:
Code: sudo apt-get --purge autoremove tofrodos Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
I am trying to install some packages in a ubuntu 8.10 server, however, apt-get doesn't work (I get several 'not found' errors). Is there any way to do that? I know this version is probably not supported anymore but I can't just format a customer server because it's OS is outdated...I just can't put my sources.list on it because I am on ubuntu 10.10 and it would download updates for the wrong OS probably causing a huge damage on the old one.
I am running ubuntu 9.10 on a dell mini 10v. I am experienced in running themes and xsplashes, but for some reason i can not successfully install pointers. I drag and drop the pointer themes to the appearance window found from System>Prefrences>Appearances. When i click customize i see that the pointers i instatlled are there, however when i choose them it doesn't work properly, if i go over text or resize a window i see the new pointers but the main pointer always stays the default white.
I've had many problems with Linux so far. Here's just one: I love Warcraft 3. So I bought Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne today. I installed them correctly with WINE and tried to open. It starts to open like it does at internet cafes, so I think its fine. But then the screen resolution keeps changing and it doesn't get anywhere.
Next problem:I ask my friend who has warcraft 3 on Linux. He says you don't have the right drivers. I go to System > Administrator > Hardware Drivers and as he said the applet said: "No proprietary drivers installed". My friend says to check the Video graphics card. But I don't see where i can find what model it is. My computer is Compaq presario CQ60 with the default video/graphics cards. I know nothing about drivers, If I can't find a solution ill probably reformat my computer to Windows 7.
The web cam on my Dell Inspiron mini 10 doesn't work properly. Cheese only takes very dark pictures but no video and the main screen stays dark all the time. Skype transmits a very dark image, too. How can that be tweaked.

It seems that I have been running Firefox unbeknownst to me with a broken configuration. It seems that if I enable the Quote: Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above in Edit->Preferences->Content->Fonts&Colors->Advanced, pages will no longer be render properly -- they are mostly blank. When running on the command line, I notice that I get errors from Pango (whatever that is) and think there may be a connection.
I tried doing sudo aptitude reinstall libpango-perl libpango1.0-0 libpango1.0-common libpangomm-1.4-1 but it didn't fix the problems. (I haven't yet tried uninstalling pango since it looks like it removes some crucial components.)I also tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig and it didn't help.I'm guessing that the fonts cannot be scaled. This otherwise wouldn't be an issue, but it seems that some Firefox addons forcibly ignore the configured fonts and those pop-up windows are mostly blank/empty and therefore useless.
I have an Apple iBook (ancient I know) and whenever I boot from the Live CD (Kubuntu 10.10) it boots up in 800x600 (as far as I can tell that's what it is). This would be a problem however it simplely leaves a huge black column on the right side and has a partially duplicated desktop below it. When I go to display settings it won't let me change to a higher resolution (1024x768 is what the iBook natively runs at). This is an iBook G3.
Im on an inspiron 5100 laptop and i wanted to try out the new GNOME shell and every time i launch it it takes a long time then does not display correctly at all. forcing me to restart.
So far, as a former Chrome user on Windows, I am enjoying Chromium. However, there is one glaring problem that is bugging me, and is disrupting my usage of the browser.
Chromium will not show Japanese fonts properly. It's not that everything shows up as boxes. The problem is that certain characters will show in Japanese, and certain will show in Korean, thereby making the Japanese text unreadable. Copying and pasting into gedit allows me to read the Japanese text, and Firefox never had this problem, however, within Chromium, this is unreadable.
Here is a picture to show you what I mean:
Has anyone else had this problem, and fixed it? I have installed the language packs and have tried setting things to different unicode fonts and changing the encoding to unicode and even Japanese, and continue to get these errors.
I'm using Firefox 3.6.10 for Ubuntu 10.10 with the smooth-scaling ppa (only addons I'm using are Firebug and the Ubuntu modifications pack).Several sites with navigation menus the menu is spread over two lines when it obviously shouldn't be (eg. The Telegraph online, BBC News...) this happens no matter what the zoom level is set to. Chromium renders all these pages normally.
On Linux Mint FBReader (both the latest version and the one in the 10.04 repositories)displays Chinese characters as boxes(see screenshot) for some reason, but on Windows it works fine. Is there any way to fix it?
