I want to make a server that I can log into from my lap top over wireless and access virtual machines, and server terminals. VPN over ssh maybe? Is there a fedora server edition i can use and does it have the required capabilities?

When I 'iwconfig wlan1 mode Master' I get:
SET failed on wlan1; Invalide argument.
wlan1 is a Netgear WG111v2 which worked as soon as I plugged it in after I installed F10.
I don't know is it not supported? What is? Is there a different driver I can put on that will work in master mode.
What should I do basically?
i dont know much about setting up networks at all. i searched through this site and others, but have not yet been successful in finding the information i need.i have a laptop running 11.2, kde 4.4. this laptop is connected to a wireless router. now, i also have a desktop running winXP, without wireless, which i would like to connect to the network. where the desktop is located, i can't connect to the router via ethernet, but i would be able to connect it to the laptop via ethernet.so, is there a way to connect this XP desktop to my op.su. laptop so that it will have net access?if so, could someone please help me, or direct me to the appropriate information source?

Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Debian installed on my laptop. When the laptop is connected to the network via ethernet cord, I can ssh into it fine. However if I switch to wireless, I can no longer SSH in.
I have confirmed SSHD is running.
I am switching between wired/wireless by editing /etc/network/interfaces and re-booting the laptop.
The laptop can connect to the internet, and SSH into other computers on the LAN just fine with either connection. But they can't connect to it when it's wireless.
When it's wireless, the laptop can SSH into itself as well.
My iptables is set to allow everything.
They're both on the same subnet.
I'm trying to install Fedorad 9 on my windows Vista dell xps laptop in a seperate partition. I can't seem to make my laptop boot off of the DVD i'm burning the Fedora ISO to. I'm just using Windows, not Nero or anything like that. I've changed the boot options in setup, burned the ISO to the DVD and rebooted but I end up in Windows. By the way, should I just go ahead and use Fedora 10 as a new user or has it been "debugged"? I don't need any additional "new version" problems at this point.

According to the instructions posted here: [URL] I need to use Windows 7 and a couple different applications. Windows 7 is not an option for me, as I have Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 installed and would like to keep it that way. Can anyone offer any clues as to what I would need to use?
Based on much internet searching, I've found that I was/am not the only one struggling to get Fedora 10 to span the display across a laptop screen and an external monitor. So what I have here are instructions to do so:
1) Fedora 10 does not (by default) use an xorg.conf file to configure the display. So type the following command into the command line: yum install system-config-display
2) Go to the menu bar and navigate to System>Administration>Display. I left all the display settings as they were and hit OK (repeat this step twice to make an xorg.conf backup). This will generate the xorg.conf and back up files in the directory: /etc/X11/
3) Now we need to see what size virtual screen you need. Type the following command into the command line (without the quotes): "xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS" It will tell you that you are asking for a certain size screen. Write those numbers down. I have a 1600x1200 external monitor so my number is 2624x1200 (1600+1024 x 1200).
4) Change directories to /etc/X11 and type (without the quotes): "sudo gedit xorg.conf" Scroll down to where the device section is. Mine looks like this:

Some videocards need to turn 3d acceleration off in order for dual screens to work. It is important that you turn off desktop effects if you turn off 3d acceleration!!! So under the driver line add the line (with quotes): Option "NoAccel" "true" Mine looks like this:

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)
I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop
Questions:
1- How can I fix that problem?

I have a mainly windows house with a notebook running Fedora 11. The problem is that when this computer is on the wireless network it shows no computers on the network. It gives me the error that it can't retrieve the shared list from server. However when I am using it on the wired part of the same network it will see all of the other computers. I was wondering if anyone here could shed light on what might be going on. I am not sure if it is a setting on the computer or something to do with the router. However I don't think it has anything to do with the router because I have windows laptops that run on the same wireless access point and have no problem
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 10 on my laptop (HP dv2500 series). I have it dual booting between Fedora and Vista. The laptop has one of those wireless on/off switches and next it the LED: blue - wireless active, amber - wireless inactive. It works fine in Vista but whenever I'm using Fedora it flashes between blue and amber quite fast, stopping on blue for maybe 4 seconds, then flashes again. I am on a constant connection to the network though, no sign of connection loss.

View 2 Replies View Relatedsometime back when installing FC10, i tried installing ndis wrapper, and later i installed the broadcom driver bcm431 (i think). also i didn't remove the ndis wrapper.
all was fine untill a yesterday when ndis wrapper and some related packages got updated which somehow caused wireless to stop working. lspci showed the hardware present.
to get it to work, i did a yum erase ndis-wrapper, followed by a reboot.
it may not be the most elegent way, but it worked for me.
hardware specs:acer aspire 4720Z (mine has broadcom wireless, others may have atheros)
I have tries numerous methods to connect my laptop running Fedora 13 and my Netgear WGPS606 print server all without success. Has anyone made a successful connection and if so how? when running Windows 7 I have no trouble. Both Windows 7 and Fedora connect to the internet without a problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got my Lenovo T60 laptop wireless running without too much trouble, the only problem is when i close my laptop lid and open it again the wirelessconnection is down and i simply cant click on the network icon in the notification area to re-connect as wlan0 is inactive. If i go to System>admin>network i cant activate the interface either as the 'active' button is greyed out, the only way to get the thing to come alive again (other than a full reboot) is to toggle the wireless switch on my laptop off and then back on.Not sure this should be required, i've got the interface configured to start automatically but it doesnt seem to care.

Background: I have a Dell Studio 1745 with builtin Intel 5100bg wireless card. It connects to my Linksys WRT54G router just fine in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 using either KDE or Gnome. In Fedora 13 it only connects under Gnome, not KDE. Those are using NetworkManager. Using traditional ifup only works in Fedora under Gnome, i.e. nothing works under KDE in Fedora.

This will allow you to use iphones' data plan as a wireless access point. Currently setup instructions are only posted for windows/mac using a helper app to configure the laptop. Here are the instructions I followed to setup iphonemodem2 to work under Fedora 10: Download iPhoneModem2 from a jailbroken iphone using Cydia. Create a new wireless network on Fedora with the following settings:
a) SSID = "iPhoneModem"
b) Mode = Ad-hoc
c) IPv4 Method = Automatic (DHCP)
Connect laptop and iphone to new wireless network. Start iphonemodem app on iphone. The "traffic" does not update; the "status" says "Wrong Wifi Network"; and the signal strength says 0%. However, the network connection should be there as long as you have a data signal to your service provider.

Samsung R522 laptop
Realtek RTL8192E wireless network controller (PCI)
Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 (automatically updated using software update)
My problem is that my wireless card has never worked - basically there aren't any widely available linux drivers, and there are many threads on getting the RTL8192E to work on many different forums, e.g. here, but none specifically for Fedora, so I think that this thread could potentially guide many more users. FYI, my hardwired network connection works perfectly.
Fantastically however, by emailing Realtek support, they'll send you their Linux driver, which most people have claimed works perfectly (although why they haven't just put it on their website is beyond me). SO, I've got a Linux driver for my wireless card. When Realtek emailed me to send me the driver, they said to just 'cd' into the driver directory, then do
su
make clean
make
make install
reboot
./wlan0up or ./wlan1up
OK, so I tried to do this and get the following error:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
I don't know enough about linux to understand this error. I really don't want to have to recompile my kernel, and I hope there is some way to install this driver with not too much hassle. How to overcome this error, and install my wireless driver so I can get wireless network access on my Fedora 12 operating system. I've found Fedora 12 really easy to use so far, but this is proving quite hard!

I had the Wireless Broadband working. It stopped working after I closed the laptop (suspend). Also the wifi will not connect until reboot. Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.

I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.

The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

so it seems that opensuse knows my hardware but networkmanager doesn't! I have all broadcom packages installed as well as kernel-firmware installed.
I have Lenovo G550 and openSUSE 11.4. Everything's ok, wifi without problems, I could connect to anywhere I wanted to, but yesterday while laptop was running and was connected actually by wire to internet, after removing the wire I realized that I cannot connect to wifi (the laptop was hibernated during night) - even the light diode in the front of the laptop was not shining. I went to yast and realized that the wlan0 isn't enabled and there's new eth1 port. But the wlan by ifup I cannot start and the eth1 I cannot start as well.
