Fedora :: Make The 10 Display Span A Laptop And VGA Screen?

Jan 6, 2009

Based on much internet searching, I've found that I was/am not the only one struggling to get Fedora 10 to span the display across a laptop screen and an external monitor. So what I have here are instructions to do so:

1) Fedora 10 does not (by default) use an xorg.conf file to configure the display. So type the following command into the command line: yum install system-config-display

2) Go to the menu bar and navigate to System>Administration>Display. I left all the display settings as they were and hit OK (repeat this step twice to make an xorg.conf backup). This will generate the xorg.conf and back up files in the directory: /etc/X11/

3) Now we need to see what size virtual screen you need. Type the following command into the command line (without the quotes): "xrandr --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS" It will tell you that you are asking for a certain size screen. Write those numbers down. I have a 1600x1200 external monitor so my number is 2624x1200 (1600+1024 x 1200).

4) Change directories to /etc/X11 and type (without the quotes): "sudo gedit xorg.conf" Scroll down to where the device section is. Mine looks like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "intel"
EndSection

Some videocards need to turn 3d acceleration off in order for dual screens to work. It is important that you turn off desktop effects if you turn off 3d acceleration!!! So under the driver line add the line (with quotes): Option "NoAccel" "true" Mine looks like this:

[Code]....

Scroll down to where the screen section is, and then find the display subsection. It should look something like this:

[Code]....

Fedora :: FC10 - Gnome Panel Does Not Span Dual Display X Screen

Jun 1, 2009

I upgraded to FC10 from FC8 and my Gnome-panel no longer spans both screens in my dual monitor configuration. This worked fine in FC8, and I can't seem to figure out how to make this config work in FC10.

I've tried Xinerama and Twinview, and various configurations in xorg.conf, and cannot seem to make it happen.

How to make both my panels (top and bottom) go across both screens?

General :: How Can I Make Window Span Over Both Monitors

Oct 10, 2010

How can I make a window span over both monitors? I have the monitors configured using the KDE monitor setting tool. I need specifically full-screen (for presentation purposes) or at least a maximized window. Kwin insists on locking the window on one desktop.interestingly it really is Kwin preventing me to do this. If I get rid of KDE and just launch a plain X session, the window maximizes correctly.

Ubuntu :: Invert Display On Laptop Screen?

Jan 3, 2010

I have a busted laptop, case that is. The internals are great. So I stripped the screen and built a large box. I used a cnc router to build a lid that would flush mount the screen, and have a lip of wood left to cover the metal edges of the screen.

Ok, what happened is that the measure twice cut once rule or one of its variants went into effect, and I put the hinge on the wrong side of the box. Normally I would say just flip the screen around, but one edge is wider than the other, so that will not do. I want have the hinge towards the couch so that I can tilt it up and be able to easily see the screen.

So I need a way to invert the screen, and I can't seem to find a way to do it. The coffee table is an Emachines N-10, and my video driver is the Nvidea one, because karmic told me my onboard card is not quite up to the task of the other one.

Ubuntu :: No Laptop Screen After Connecting External Display

Jan 2, 2010

I have tried to connect my GMA500 based Acer 751 to an external dsiplay via VGA connection. I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 Doesn't Display On Vaio Laptop's Screen

Oct 23, 2010

Recently I install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio laptop. After the CD boot I always got a black screen, after a week i figured that there's nothing wrong, it's just the screen doesnt show up on my laptop's screen. So I use an external monitor and It showed up as normal.

But I need to have it show up on my laptop's screen. I tried to use "additional driver" to activate latest Nvidia driver but after that even my external monitor doesnt work too. Latest driver doesnt work properly i guess. I did try to install older driver version manually but after I turned of gdm, install driver and reboot, my ubuntu always starts with tty1 command terminal. tried ctrl+alt+7 but it stucked at (checking battery state), startx doesnt help me return to graphical screen too.

I got help from a moderator here but the best result so far is to edit my /etc/default/grub. Change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
Sudo update-grub

after the reboot I have it shows up on my laptop's screen. But it seems low-bit color,a bit grand to me(compared to external monitor, both w/o driver). Anw i checked system/preference>monitor . It showed up that my monitor:unknown. I can't choose other resolutions, refresh rate = 0.

I always know its my widescreen is the problem. I have had a lot of problems dealing wgames/application (on windows) can't work on 16:9 mode. install a stable Nvidia driver

Everything I tried in the past weeks is in here [URL] My laptop is SONY VAIO VPCCW19FX, Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, widescreen monitor

Fedora :: Laptop Display Is Put On The Left And All Other

Jan 8, 2010

I want to change the default behavior of my display hotkey combo (Fn+F7). I can do this in KDE, but in Gnome, the gnome-settings-daemon cycles through the options. Problem is, the option I want is not there. I want the laptop display on the right and the external display on the left. I know how to use xrandr to change this or to use System > Preferences > Display, but I want to use my hotkey combo. I see two ways to do this. Find the configuration file that selects the options that are cycled and manually edit it, or disable this hotkey combo for the gnome-settings-daemon and use my own script in /etc/acpi/actions, etc/acpi/events for the hotkey combo. Currently the gnome-settings-daemon intercepts the hotkey combo, so I can't use my own script. Anyone know anything about this, or do I need to file a bug report?

Red Hat / Fedora :: 13 Does Not Recognize Laptop Display With Nvidia Installed

Jun 9, 2010

boots fine if an external monitor is plugged in, otherwise the laptop screen just flashes white till it dies and reboots. lsmod says nouveau is loaded, however it lets me rmmod it as though its not in use. rmmod on the nvidia mod says it is in use. nvidia settings can change the resolution of the external monitor

used yum to install and built from scratch, both have the same result. reason i want to get rid of nouveau is because it detects my laptop resolution as larger than it is and even if i lower the resolution it still stretches it further than the boundries of the screen. without the nvidia driver my laptop display is recognised correctly aside from size issues.

Enabling the nvidia driver / etc / rc.d / init.d / functions line 526 1484 Segmentation fault "$@"

By the way, should I just go ahead and use Fedora 10 as a new user or has it been "debugged"? I don't need any additional "new version" problems at this point.

Fedora :: Using F11 - No Automatic Display On External Screen

Feb 11, 2010

Few months ago I stood on my netbook running F11 and broke the screen. I don't believe there's anything else wrong with it as the lights and fans act as normal when I turn it on. I hooked it up to a monitor but it doesn't automatically display on the external screen. So I have a pretty odd and possibly quite difficult request. Any step-by-step guide of which buttons to press after turning the machine on, in order to get it to switch to the external display? I just need something along the lines of, press enter, tab, type password, enter, press alt-a, down, down, down, enter, tab, etc. Another possible solution, a very long shot, would be a boot disk that defaults to an external screen?

Fedora Installation :: Make A Virtual Machine Using Exiting Installed Windows 7 On Laptop HD?

Dec 4, 2010

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)

I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop

Questions:

1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

General :: Dual Screen Display Setup In Fedora 12?

Jul 12, 2010

I am Currently attempting to set up a Dual Screen setup at my work but seem to be having some strange results. For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot See Screen With New SL Linux Install On Old Laptop

Sep 16, 2010

I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.

The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.

I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).

I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.
