I'm totally sick of my WiFi Card, a Realtek 8187 connected by miniPCIe, althought internally designed as USB, I've tried all there is, and I've decided to change it. Which brand do you guys recommend? In my experience, I want to avoid Realtek and Atheros, but which brand offer the best "out-of-the-box" experience, and less overall issues? Intel, Broadcomm, maybe another Atheros or Realtek model, or whatever you guys think it's the best choice
I have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.
I am getting obsessed with Linux OS up to the point of starting to swap MS OS.I opened WICD and it show (Wired network = 0 wired-default VVV and wireless network = C STR ESSID ENCRYPT BSSID MODE CHNL is this meaning that build in wireless card is or is not recognized? I will keep looking for info, although is hard to learn a new OS from scratch.
I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking: static IP DHCP loopback And I'm not sure which one to pick.
I'm not exactly sure if this should be here and not in the Hardware & Laptops section, but seeing as my only problem is with WiFi, I'm guessing this is the right place. Under Ubuntu, my laptop (an Asus K42Ja, more details below) can see wireless networks normally. However, when I attempt to connect, it fails to establish a connection. Under Windows on the same laptop (dual boot), no problems are experienced.
According to this, there's a firmware bug in my wireless chip which causes connections to get dropped. I'm not getting connections at all, but I still tried the workarounds on that page with no luck. The router is a TP-Link TL-WR340G. My previous laptop, a really old one from 2003 running Ubuntu 9.10 was able to connect to that router without problems. The wireless card was Intel on that as well (but, of course, much older). The router is set up to use WPA for security. I didn't use WPA2 as I read something a while ago about problems with WPA2 and some Linux distros. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.

I have a problem with my Grundig's (model GNB-250D) laptop wireless card. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and tried to use a wireless connection to browse the internet but it didn't detect any, it seemed strange as it worked perfectly on Windows. I can browse the internet fine if I use an Ehternet cable.

a. identify your hardware: list the hardware detected on the screen b. highlight with color code any hardware listed that is not supported or poorly supported: in this case graphics drivers c. perform a quick benchmark test of your hardware: In this case I want the benchmark to tell me what capabilities my graphics card has. d. automatically recommend and set the best kernel parameters for a successful boot: if the graphics card needs nomodeset or modeset=0 or whatever I want it to do it for me.

I recently switched from windows xp to ubuntu and have been very impressed so far. However, I've run into a bit of a problem. My laptop has a switch on the side that enables or disables the wireless card and every now and again its inevitable that someone accidentally switches it off. I need to test network card throughput and speed between two computers, one is running Fedora and other running Windows 7. Usually I would use netperf to perform this task, however I can't find Windows build of netperf. Can anyone recommend any network evaluation tool, similar to netperf (clien/server) which has both Windows and Linux versions.
Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.
I have a problem here with my updated kernel. I'm currently using Fedora 14 kernel 220.127.116.11-64, and my wireless card Broadcom BCM4312, which had an issue before with Linux distros, is working fine already, thanks to the kmod-wl software driver. My problem now is this, after updating to kernel 18.104.22.168-72, fedora does not boot, and I noticed that the wireless card is the only thing not activating, compared to the working kernel. I have got a Laptop running Arch Linux and a Macbook. I have got a wireless network via my broadband router and get acccess both laptops remotely via ssh and sftp.I have been trying to set up NFS on both laptops with th intention of backing up one laptop to the other. I got ubuntu working fine on my netbook and wanted to play around with opensuse. I have it installed and everything works fine except my wireless connection. I have updated everything since the installation through a wired connection, that didn't help. I have read the stickies, but to be honest, I'm so new to this stuff I'm kinda lost. So my wireless network has a WEP encryption and I have entered that password as a 64 HEX Key in the Wireless Manager widget. It connects to the network and says is labeled as active, however there is still the yellow exclamation shield next to the connection. Firefox and other apps don't have access to the internet.
I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?
Something has gone awry with my login. After the usual username/password prompt my laptop comes up with smart card authentication & I can't login. How do I get away from the graphical login so I can login & correct the problem?
I have two network cards in my computer (Debian). One (eth0) is connected to the router which is connected to the internet, the other one (eth1) is connected to my laptop (Gentoo). Now I want to surf the web both on my computer and on my laptop. I obeyed some tutorials "Linux as router":

I have a mainly windows house with a notebook running Fedora 11. The problem is that when this computer is on the wireless network it shows no computers on the network. It gives me the error that it can't retrieve the shared list from server. However when I am using it on the wired part of the same network it will see all of the other computers. I was wondering if anyone here could shed light on what might be going on. I am not sure if it is a setting on the computer or something to do with the router. However I don't think it has anything to do with the router because I have windows laptops that run on the same wireless access point and have no problem
