View 3 Replies View RelatedEverytime I unlock my screen in KDE from the screensaver the background for the Gnome interface momentarily appears before the KDE plasma workspace returns. It only appears for a second and, sure, I can live with it but I wondered if there is a way to fix it and why it is happening in the first place? I initially installed ubuntu 10.4 then installed kubuntu through the package manager and have since upgraded to 10.10 and now 11.4. I think this problem has been here since install of kubuntu

I have a removable USB drive formated with NTFS. I enabled all the samba boolians in the SElinux GUI but it still doesn't seem to work. If i put it on permissive it will work. What more is there that i need to do to get my directories to show up on samba with selinux enabled?

I have been searching around and found lots of details of how to fix a dual boot situation gone wrong but I have not run across a guide or steps on how to install Windows & FC12 the correct way.I have to reinstall my computer any way for other reasons so I am going to reinstall with either XP or Win7 (leaning towards 7) and Fedora 12. I can dedicate a drive to each OS no problem and I can imagine how I would install each on it's own drive, but not quite sure what to use as a boot manager?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIve been learning bash over the past 6 months or so and have written a few scripts etc and i have just downloaded julius to execute my scripts and a few commands with speech recognition, the example script that comes with julius to execute commands is written in python and the example works fine when executed but i would like to further extend and customize it but i dont know anything about python, so ideally i would like to translate it to bash as that is what i am learning/using at the minute and would like to learn/use one language at a time, translating it as i think im a little out of my league, i look at the script and sort of understand how it works but i dont know anything about python and my knowledge of bash is limited for use of translating languages.

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
I have a fedora 13, and I am not so much a linux person . I installed VLC in my system using yum, and ever since that I get audio playback only using VLC. Audio through browsers, or other players do not work anymore.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSometimes (but not every time), when booting my Dell Inspiron 530, eth0 will not come up right away. I can boot and log in to Gnome, and the NetworkManager applet shows that the ethernet cable is unplugged. After sitting for 5-10 minutes, it will link up and everything works. If I unplug the network cable and plug it back in, it comes right up. But once it's linked, it works fine and never disconnects after that. I've tried switching to a different port on my switch and a new ethernet cable. So I suspect it's some sort of weird kernel problem. I checked /var/log/messages and the only thing that looks weird is:

Hey all, I need help here! Whenever I boot up Fedora 13 my computer just decides to stop doing things right before the graphical login screen comes up. The system starts up properly, but after the "local" program starts, it goes to the fedora-colored blue screen right before the login screen usually comes up. I can still bring up consoles with ctrl alt f1/f2 and switch the tty screens. Whenever I try to start the X server using the X or Xorg command, it echoes the usual stuff and then the screen goes black. After that, nothing happens. I can get out of X by using the classic ctrl alt backspace method.
I haven't checked any X logs other than Xorg.0.log, but I'll post the others for any special failures soon.
Just installed Fedora 15, using default options. Sound works through headphone jack but not thru pc speaker. (Machine has no external speakers.) Puzzling, since an identical hardware-wise machine with same /etc/modprobe.d files works fine.

Let me introduce this topic before I ask my question. When selecting the system language, there are different options that are based on the ISO-639 standard, which defines a code locale for each language and country. This allow us to select, for example, pt_BR (Brazilian Portuguese) or pt_PT (Portuguese form Portugal) as the language system. Then, if two variants of a language are in a different country, the ISO-639 can differentiate them this way.
But there are languages, for example Catalan, that have two variants in the same country. Then, the ISO-639 cannot differentiate them. Here is where the BCP-47 standard appears [1]. It adds a subtag to identify variants or other codifications (like sr and sr@latin) of a language. In the Catalan case, standard Catalan uses the ca_ES locale code, and the Valencian variant uses the ca_ES-valencia locale code (the subtag is -valencia). On systems based on Debian is possible to select this variants using the @ modifier. Then, if I define this LANG environment:

I am volunteering to set up a computer lab for a small private school on an extremely limited budget. I love Ubuntu for my home, and on my server at work, but have never used it in a school before. I would like to "lock down" all the control panels, pretty much everything except for a few applications (open office, firefox, and some educational games, of course). I don't want the students (who will be automatically logged in as guests) to be able to make changes, or unintentionally mess things up.
Alternatively, at the public school I work at, we use Windows (sigh) that has been "frozen" using a program called Deep Freeze (similar to windows "steady-state"), which causes any changes a user my make revert back to default when rebooted. Is there a Linux equivalent? That may work too!
