I have a fedora 13, and I am not so much a linux person . I installed VLC in my system using yum, and ever since that I get audio playback only using VLC. Audio through browsers, or other players do not work anymore.
View 1 Repliesso my problem is that i can't disable the speakers on my laptop when i plug in my headphones. in other words, i get sound from both the headphones and the speakers, when the expected behavior is to disable the speakers when headphones are plugged in, and enable the speakers when headphones are unplugged..
i've been looking around the forum and google, and i found a way to adjust the speaker and headphone volume manually in alsamixer. To adjust the headphone volume on alsamixer, i can raise or lower volume using the "Front" volume bar. To adjust the speaker volume, i raise or lower volume on the "Speaker" volume bar.
so, it's cool to know that i can do this manually, but i'm sure there's an option i can put in alsa-base.conf to automate this. i just can't seem to find that option...
anyway, i'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit...and here's my alsa-base.conf file

All of my audio is working great now on Open Suse 11.2: MP3s, Skype,Flashplayer etc.all are working great. There is only one strange thing that is happening, when I plug in my headphones I get audio coming out of my laptop and my headphones! How can I get my audio to come out of my headphones only when I plug them in?

i selected analogoutput but sound is not coming .
I have windows 7 installed on my system.After that I installed Ubuntu 8.XX on it.I have made a drive empty for this purpose and use manuall installation on this drive.When installation completed, I restart my PC but didn't saw option of Windows(or other) in boot menu.My Ubuntu is working fine and I can see the C and D drives ( which were there before installation) and there are all files related to windows in C.Can anybody let me know how to get Windows option in booting menu so that I can use my windows too.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSometimes (but not every time), when booting my Dell Inspiron 530, eth0 will not come up right away. I can boot and log in to Gnome, and the NetworkManager applet shows that the ethernet cable is unplugged. After sitting for 5-10 minutes, it will link up and everything works. If I unplug the network cable and plug it back in, it comes right up. But once it's linked, it works fine and never disconnects after that. I've tried switching to a different port on my switch and a new ethernet cable. So I suspect it's some sort of weird kernel problem. I checked /var/log/messages and the only thing that looks weird is:

View 3 Replies View RelatedHey all, I need help here! Whenever I boot up Fedora 13 my computer just decides to stop doing things right before the graphical login screen comes up. The system starts up properly, but after the "local" program starts, it goes to the fedora-colored blue screen right before the login screen usually comes up. I can still bring up consoles with ctrl alt f1/f2 and switch the tty screens. Whenever I try to start the X server using the X or Xorg command, it echoes the usual stuff and then the screen goes black. After that, nothing happens. I can get out of X by using the classic ctrl alt backspace method.
I haven't checked any X logs other than Xorg.0.log, but I'll post the others for any special failures soon.
Just installed Fedora 15, using default options. Sound works through headphone jack but not thru pc speaker. (Machine has no external speakers.) Puzzling, since an identical hardware-wise machine with same /etc/modprobe.d files works fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting the pulse audio server to find the hw0 with the common m-audio 24/96 audiophile. This card worked with previous versions of all forms of pulse but seems to bork on the HW0 function for audio out...which is a stereo analogue simple output. Audacity sees the HW functions but pulse does not! Here is a screen shot of the pulse crap. And another screen shot of what the real card at "alsamixer -c 0" sees. There is no dac or adc detected or configured with pulse. This does not make any sense as alsa and alsamixer has all the correct device controls available to any other software that uses the ice1712 driver.
I am using Fedora 12 amd 64 as a live usb on a 16 gig stick and want to be able to record and mix audio on to HD with my reliable high end m-audio pci sound card without having to mess with the pulse crap or having to install a full HD option. BTW in the pulse sound configuration gui dropdown list there is no indication of HW0 and the only devices that are available in pulse are digital outs.....go figure, so essentially I can see all the correct connections and use programs that access alsa directly eg: audacity but have no sound through the crappy and ever borked pulse audio server! Any suggestions as to how to remove all the pulse stuff that comes with most distros that use gnome? I have done this deed before with Ubuntu but do no know how to do the deed with an rpm based system. If I install a non pulse version of xmms and let it use jackd then I should have reliable sound for cd audio etc and should be able to configure VLC, Ardour and Nted well without pulse getting in on the action and screwing up my sound.
The workstation is running FC14.
I have the audio out of the media machine passed into the line in on my workstation. It's just handly to have the audio pass in this way so that i can manage the volume or headphones or whatever from one machine.
This worked, and worked well, for a very long time. I recently reinstalled the workstion, FC14 still. After the reinstall, my passthrough doesn't work.
If i start up some media on the media machine, and then open up the volume control on the workstation, i can see the volume meter moving along with the audio, but nothing plays out of my speakers.
i installed ubuntu 10.04 several weeks ago and it ran faultlessly. this week i upgraded to a 500gb hard disk and reinstalled 10.04. now, the problem is no audio across the board, rhythmbox, mplayer, videos and so on. i checked to see whether the audio device was being recognized:

i then followed the two stickies in multimedia & video; the multimedia and video howto thru the installation section (using the lucid repositories) and the sound problems solutions guide thru the general help section and saving sound settings. but still no audio, video ok (as it was before). i've been using ubuntu for several years but i'm a noob so far as sound setup is concerned (this is a first time problem).
Right after I installed F12 on my desktop (using KDE), System Settings showed 4-5 audio devices.
At the beginning, sound wasn't working, so I promoted the Intel audio device to the top of the list and then I got audio.
Next login, the system complained that there were unmanaged audio devices and I chose to keep the configuration (or something like that...).
However, now only the "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" device is listed and I have no sound again
I also tried to promote the GStreamer backend over Xine, without luck.

First, I went here and downloaded the file called 'NEW T100_B.state'.URL....
Then I copied it to /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and ran 'alsactl restore' which reported that i had no soundcards.I then downloaded and expanded linux-firmware-master-intel.tar.gz but am not sure what to do with these files. I copied them to /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-686-pae/kernel/drivers/firmware as they are specific for this kernel, but they don't seem to be doing anything and 'alsactl restore' still tells me that I don't have a soundcard. What do I need to do with these files?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got Ubuntu 10.4 and have been using Rhythmbox to play CDs. When I put a CD in it would always be recognised and Rhythmbox would display the artist and song titles. Today I installed the following package:ubuntu-restricted-extrasThis was so I could rip CDs to MP3s. This worked, however it seems to have also had the side effect of preventing Rhythmbox from retrieving information about audio CDs. If I run Rhythmbox from a shell I get the following debug:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did enable multimedia support in the NX client configuration services tab but no sound coming through NX session.configure desktop / multimedia / I have Output Device Preference.My sound card is listed and below that is Pulse Audio.From reading up on NX I think Pulse Audio has to be the preferred output device but gives error that it does not work and rolls back to sound card it if it is set to preferred.I for got how I got it to come up last week but it was an error that pulse audio was not even installed.
