View 4 RepliesAfter being on the computer for awhile, it suddenly stops and goes to the purple screen like one would see when turning the computer on, only slightly distorted. after a few moments it switches to a black screen with a flashing _ but you can't type anything, and then it changes so it's blank, and these white bars start to flash on the screen. I just put 10.04 on my computer about two days ago, it's been doing it since. When I first tried to upgrade from 9.10 I encountered a huge error of some sort so I just put a brand new install onto the computer from CD.

I did exactly this tutorial says [URL] But now my Ubuntu 11.04 is stuck at blue-white login screen. Only User Defined Session and Recovery Console options are available but they are not working as well. But when I did the Gnome 3 upgrading, it asked for me to remove unused packages and I said yes. About 20 packages removed. Do I need to reinstall my Ubuntu? Or can I get my old Gnome 2? (Not Unity, I didn't like it.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded an IBM T41 laptop from UNR 10.04 to 10.10 beta. Upgrade ran fine.
After rebooting, I see the splash screen, and eventually the screen goes white. It does this over a few transitions, most likely in the time between X starting and having the desktop loading (I have auto logon enabled).
Once it is all white, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the terminal. Since then I have disabled auto login but same result. I have also removed Unity (I use UNR and the T41 doesn't have a 3d graphics card), and have the same white screen.
Only after removing xserver-xorg-video-radeon, can I get to the Ubuntu Desktop (in 16 colour glory).
The Thinkpad T41 has a Radeon Mobility 7500 in it, and ran fine in UNR 10.04 (which is also a different kernel).
There was no xorg.conf in use (although I have added one during testing and forced the radeon driver to load) and I reviewed xorg log but didn't see anything.
I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. I tried to install xterm, it can work, but it not easy to use for me, I still want to use gnome-terminal,

I have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. Should I just update my system regularly and hope it gets fixed, or is there some way to fix it by tweaking some settings or stuff? Maybe by installing the official ATI drivers? I'm not sure, but I've read somewhere that the official drivers don't work well with Gnome 3, is that true?
I wanted to try F10 today so I downloaded the Fedora 10 64 Bit LiveCD but for some reason after it's done loading (the three colored loading bar), it hangs on a white screen with no sign of my computer thinking (no HDD LED activity and no CD ROM activity indicators flashing). Any clue how I could test the LiveCD without having to install Fedora (with text or otherwise..)? For the record, I have a 4870 1GB graphics card. I'm assuming that's fully supported, right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 13 (64-bit) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with integrated Intel graphics (lspci reports it as: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)), and am having a strange problem with watching iPlayer in fullscreen.The video will work fine in the web browser at default size, and most times even in fullscreen as well, but sometimes on switching it to fullscreen the entire screen goes white with only the cursor visible. The sound keeps on playing and the cursor responds to mouse movements but I haven't been able to do anything to fix the screen (I tried bringing up a terminal and logging out, as well as doing a "compiz --replace" but neither had any visible effect - obviously I may have typed them wrong since the screen was white, but I tried multiple times). As mentioned above, I am using Compiz desktop effects, and also had to check the "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" box in CCSM to get iPlayer to play video in fullscreen in the first place.
The annoying thing is that I haven't been able to consistently reproduce the error, in that sometimes it takes multiple attempts of going fullscreen and/or videos for it to occur. However, it has been pretty consistent in that it has only taken a couple of different videos to be played for it to happen (oddly I don't think I've had it happen on the first fullscreen attempt of the first video yet, but that might not mean anything).
I install the fc11 from Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso. The software update has just updated my fc11 kernel from 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686.PAE to 2.6.29.6-217.2.7.fc11.i686.PAE. If I boot using the new kernel, The screen resolution is not correct (everything gets bigger) and the screen goes into blank white screen suddenly after log in.

I followed leigh123linux' guide about the compiz fusion installation and set-up. Unfortunately, I failed to do a compiz-check before running the whole thing. I enabled compiz and did a reboot. The next time I logged in, my screen just turned white. I can still see my mouse moving though, but I couldn't disable the compiz.

The live CD appears to boot, but once I get beyond the selection stage (installing or running Fedora from the disk first), I invariably get a fully white screen. Nothing I've tried to do changes this. Although I'm reasonably experienced with the command line, I've never tried to do a GUI-less install of a full OS, and am unsure how/if to begin with Fedora. Any suggestions for either fixing the white screen of death, and/or installing from the command line would be a big help.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly.However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.
I get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

I have re-installed Fedora 3 times, each time, after a little while of use, when I am botting it up, it loads up, and before the login screen appears, the screen just goes black, and I end up with just a black screen and a white line in the top left corner flashing, thus resulting in me not being able to log in. The exact same has happened a number of time
Could it be something I had installed? Also, whilst using it, on the third install, a few times a message appeared telling me there was a kernel error, could this be linked to the problem? I was running Fedora in GNOME, but I had KDE installed too.
Recently i had migrated from windows 7 to fedora 15. i have lot of flipbooks with me and unable to open those flipbooks in fedora. finding a suitable solution to open those flipbooks. is there a software to open these books linux. in windows there is no requirement for special softwares to open flipbook, since it is similar to flv or swf files. i had already tried with wine. with wine the file is opened but do not displays the contents or pages, show a blank white screen. @people who dont know about flipbooks: flipbooks are flash objects usually created from pdf files used for reading, flipbooks simulate the reallife book actions(page turning).

I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CD�s) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.
I'd like to install Fedora 14 64bit as a dual boot on an existing win 7 32bit system. When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.
