General :: Building A Translation Platform - From English To German

Sep 27, 2010

I have now a second post on the work I am doing. I am trying to complete a model for translating English texts into German. My concept is a model using a text editor with only simple executable scripts being written to perform steps in the process. I need to use a language for doing simple things like tagging words and translating using a dictionary I am building. I am beginning to use AWK in conjunction with Bash and need to find some members with whom I can dialog on particular topics; even getting advice. Are there any AWK users in the community, using the language for processing text?

OpenSUSE :: Get German Only Menue (without Some English Relics)?

Jul 28, 2011

I tried to install KDE 4.7 from the repositories. After a reboot KMail2 wanted to convert my emails..., resulting in no emails, no calendar, no addresses . The conversion didn't work. I reinstalled KDE 4.6.5 (stable 4.6 repository) and the emails were available , but my Kontact appeared in a mixture of german and english (also KMail2 in KDE4.7 was a mixture of german and english). Does somebody know, how to get german only menue (without some english relics)?

Debian Configuration :: Switch Between English And Japanese Input While Keeping An English Interface

Sep 23, 2010

I am learning japanese and I would like to be able to switch between english and japanese input while keeping an english interface. How would I achieve that? I am using KDE, by the way.

In the Kiten documentation I read that pressing Shift+Space would enable japanese input (built-in in Kiten, according to the documentation). But that does not seem to work in my system.

The windows server which is dropping files into it is able to make the file visible but the app running on the linux can't fetch it because the name is 'unexpected'if I create a file anywhere else e.g. in /tmp/ with the name response.txt it is fine. When I ls I see r?sponse.Can you advise me if I should be looking at the smb config AND the host config and give me some pointers as to where to get started trying to solve this.

I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. General :: Firefox Plugin For English Learners

Aug 29, 2010

Where to find a plug-in for Firefox that supports the following functions:
- Showing translation of a word by a simple shortcut (like Shift + Right click).
- Allowing to modify list of dictionaries (by giving links to web dictionaries).
- Storing the words into personal vocabulary for later reference.
- Allowing to type in the word for translation.
There is a large list of plug-ins for Firefox that have some of the functionality above, but after quite a long time I wasn't able to find one that satisfies all of the requirements.

General :: No 12 Hour Format Available In Gnome Clock (UK English)

Sep 2, 2010

Very simple question but very frustrating as none of the other threads/bug reports/whatever have had quite the same problem. I want gnome clock to display the time in 12 hour format. The suggested solution is something like right-click the clock -> Preferences and somewhere there will be an option to choose 12/24 hour time. Problem is I don't have that option.

The help has a note that 12 hour time "is not shown if your session language does not use the 12 hour clock" but this really shouldn't be a problem? My language/locale/city, everything I can think of, it's all some variation of en_GB, UK English, Brisbane, Australia: all places which should allow the option of 12 hour clock! So why don't I have that option?

Server :: Add Support For German Characters?

Jul 8, 2010

I have one java web application deployed in Linux environment by which I am trying to download file's from Linux server. These files have samba mounting from windows server. While downloading any file, if the file name contains simple english characters it works fine but if that file name contain German character's like then file corrupt while downloading. After analysis I found that after samba mounting these Germen characters get replaced with '?' in Linux (May be Linux unable to identify characters).Linux environment is set to LANG=en_US.UTF-8.

And we have done mounting with below options,
iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=cp850
and also try with iocharset=utf8.
Also try by installing following package,
kde-i18n-German-3.0.0-5.noarch.rpm
but it doesnt help us.

The same application works fine in windows environment. I check it on internet, and I found that for this issue you have to add support for German characters in Linux environment. Anybody know how to add German character support to Linux or How to resolve this issue??

Programming :: Python To Bash Translation?

Oct 17, 2010

Ive been learning bash over the past 6 months or so and have written a few scripts etc and i have just downloaded julius to execute my scripts and a few commands with speech recognition, the example script that comes with julius to execute commands is written in python and the example works fine when executed but i would like to further extend and customize it but i dont know anything about python, so ideally i would like to translate it to bash as that is what i am learning/using at the minute and would like to learn/use one language at a time, translating it as i think im a little out of my league, i look at the script and sort of understand how it works but i dont know anything about python and my knowledge of bash is limited for use of translating languages.

the python script is:

Code:
#! /usr/bin/python -u
# How to use it:
# julius -quiet -input mic -C julian.jconf 2>/dev/null | ./command.py
import sys

Debian :: Dynamic Input Method For German?

Nov 16, 2010

i'm running Debian "lenny" x86 on KDE. Back in Windows, I was able to switch between keyboard input languages by pressing certain hotkeys on my English keyboard. For instance if I switched to German, the semicolon button would become I think a umlaut or o umlaut. Is there any close equivalent in Debian? I know of 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data', however even if it did work (which in my case it didn't), it would be a hassle to type in commands at the terminal to switch between keyboard input languages, compared to just pressing hotkeys.

Ubuntu :: German Keyboard Layout Broken

Sep 29, 2010

Got a little problem with my keyboard layout (de -- German; all variants). Everything worked fine until a few days ago. I noticed that the tilde (usually accessible via [AltGr]+[+]) doesn't work any more. What it shows instead is the "bracketright". Even worse, almost every AltGr combination seems to have changed -- the brackets enclosing AltGr and + in the former sentence were achieved by "AltGR"+"" (left) and "AltGr"+"+" (right). Here's what gnome-keyboard-properties looks like, when I select any German keyboard layout -- minus "insert", "delete", ... and the num block:

Not only has the tilde disappeared from its regular position, it can't be found anywhere on the keyboard. This holds true from the login screen to the regular workspace. Switching to tty1..6 or booting up a VM, everything works fine. I didn't touch anything which affects the keyboard layout -- or is dpgk-reconfigure fontconfig doing something like this? ^^
