Ok, so after not being able to run KDE on my computer (Because of internet issues) I want to use this guide to run both side by side. The guide is here on the Ubuntu Forums. But it says "This is for Karmic". Has anyone used this guide on lucid?
View 3 RepliesSince I upgraded to 10.04 and ran Computer Janitor, the Xiphos Bible Guide no longer works. The splash screen comes up for a second and then disappears. I've tried removing and re-installing the program to no avail.

At&t blocks the standard ports used so some form of forwarding would have to be used. I've looked at other guides and followed them to the key but it appears I'm always missing something.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i run the KDE 4.6.1 netbook plasma desktop, there's a icon in the right upper corner telling how many applications i've running. When I click it, the desktop zooms out and shows me the applications in a graphical way, wich is pretty nice....but...then i can not select an application to switch to and have to wait a certain time out to go back to the running program i had in the foreground allready.
When i change the settings of this icon to show it always in a menu, it does work allright (but is less nice)..
It's possible I just did something wrong...Anyway, I don't have any sounds, and haven't since installation.

I want to use Plasma workspace that comes in KDE on my F12 running GNOME. I don't intend to shift to KDE but would love to use Plasma workspace in gnome.I found some links but they were Ubuntu specific and didn't work in F12 for me.

No KDE Connect options anywhere in System Settings (I also search there for "connect" and don't find anything related to KDE Connect). There's no GUI anywhere, no Plasma 5 widgets, nothing. Only "kdeconnect-cli", which when I enter "kdeconnect-cli -l" (list devices) I get

Is there anyway to run KDE without Plasma?At install I opted out of the kdebase-workspace package, but then didn't have the xwmconfig option to run KDE.Duplicating, then commenting out the original, and on the uncommented line: removing everything after 'Exec='. Taking the 'plasma.desktop' out. ...Deleting the entire file will only get it rewritten again by the system..Now it loads into beautiful void.I still have my GUI, complete with any kApps you might want: konsole, konqueror, and even krunner; but no panels or Desktop Activities.Is it still loading plasma only no longer implementing it? Am I losing precious RAM'CPU usage with plasma getting loaded without being used?

I just performed a KDE update from 4.7.0 to 4.7.1 on my OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit machine and my desktop is in bad shape: the plasma stuff doesn't seem to work at all...and I don't have any panels...the default one on the bottom of the screen is gone also. I tried creating a new user in Yast, but when I log in I get a blank black screen. KDE seems to be pooched!
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs mentioned in the title something is terribly wrong with my system. After some updates in the last 2 days Plasma keeps on crashing like a jackhammer. Kwin reports bugs and siece to work. That said I have no borders of any window I have opened and no Kickstart menu. (I am using KDE 4.4.1.) On top of it all when I rebooted the system it just hangs when it is supposed to start X and KDM. When I switch to verbose boot I see that Avahi Daemon has a "Failed" sign. I have tried with older kernels, but that did not solve anything. To be honest I am clueless on how to fix Avahi. The easiest way is to reinstall Fedora, but I would have stuck with Windows for that and where is the learning opportunity in that?

I would like to know how to troubleshoot, and fix this problem if possible (even a workaround would be great).
Tonight I installed Lucid(10.04) on my laptop, which is a VAIO VPCCW. The first problem I faced was the blank screen when trying to install Ubuntu. That was solved by pressing F6 and activating "nomodeset" Afterwards, I had to edit Grub, removing splash and quiet and adding nomodeset, to get it running.
Because of the low resolution and lack of support for effects, I intalled the proprietary driver for nvidia and restarted. Now I'm getting a message saying the display cannot be found etc and it is running is low graphics mode. When trying to open nvidia-settings, I get "You do not appear to be using nvidia X driver. edit your X configuration file(just run nvidia-xconfig as root) ... " And obviously, running nvidia-xconfig as root didn't change anything.
I was forced to move to Windows a month ago as a result of this issue(bought a new laptop) and now I see the problem is not resolved yet.
Btw, OS: 10.04 64bit Graphics Card: NVIDIA
Running Lucid, if I want to do some work with PHP, do I need to install it first or is it already there? (If it is there, I can't find it.) If I do need to install, how exactly do I do that? I did a search for PHP in Synaptic, but I had no idea what exactly I should be installing.

I am having a problem setting up my wireless on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on my desktop computer using a Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter WUSB54GP.
The wireless has run fine on my Thinkpad X60s laptop running Lucid and with my desktop and the same USB adapter in Karmic (9.10). When I installed Lucid as an upgrade on the desktop, I could not see the adapter listed at all and could not connect wirelessly to the internet.
if I need to install drivers, edit a file, or do something else to get this working I couldn't find anything useful to actually solve my problem after searching for a while.

I use crontab for a daily alarm clock, which stopped working after I moved to Lucid.

During booting of lupu 5.20 ,It starts searching for puppy files in computer disk drives,says boot partitions not found, dropping out to initial ram disk console then /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off # it remains at this position for ever. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have lucid and jack almost the way I want. I can't get apps like flash (in firefox) and rhythmbox to run through JACK. I've followed some outdated guides on the forums here, but I haven't had any luck.
I set up gstreamer to use jackaudiosink, but no luck.
If you ask me, JACK + ALSA should be the default, with maybe a simplified or automated control system for people who don't want to exploit their might
I hate having to close up a massive JACK patch just to watch a quick movie, or having to close Pidgin so JACK will start.
I have the latest release of Lucid Lynx installed. I want to try out audio recording on Linux so I want to know if it's possible to use a real time kernel with Lucid. So I installed the 2.6.31 real time kernel. It shows up in GRUB, but when I boot it gives me the message:
mounting none on /dev failed No such device
It then takes me to the login screen, and once I enter my password it just takes me back to the login.
Short story: upgraded to Natty, slowed graphics, re-installed Lucid, got Error: file not found and grub rescue prompt

After installing updates, a can`t login to Gnome. I see only purple screen. I was googling for it for several hours, but nothing helps me. pressing ctl-alt-f1 just before login, i can start gnone-panel as root. this brings me full functionallity, but only as root (and login screen is still there - on the desctop)
Things i`ve allready tried :
reinstall gnome-panel, gnome-session
killall gnome-keyring-manager just after login
have enough disk space

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu lucid x64 on an HP dv7-3065dx and even though the installation went pretty smoothly, every time I open cheese or anything else that uses the webcam, the microphone all of a sudden cuts off. It doesn't receive input. However if I use the microphone without camera then the microphone works.... Is the webcam somehow crashing the microphone?? Is there something wrong with pulseaudio? The webcam works great and is recognized as "HP Webcam".

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh install of Lucid on an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC laptop. At least once a day the main menu and context menus(desktop) in gnome stop working (They will not drop down/ appear). This includes all menus in gtk apps but not menus in not gtk apps such as firefox. I have an autohide panel at the top of the screen for my main menu, shortly after the menus stop working (but never at the same time), the panel wont unhide and the workspace swtcher applet stops working, this corresponds to when the buttons on the panel I can still see (at the bottom) stop working. When the workspace switcher applet goes, so to does the ability to switch using hotkeys (ctr alt left/right).
Suspending then resuming the laptop usually fixes these problem. Sometimes however 2 suspends are needed to fully fix the menus. It is possible for the context menu on the desktop to be working after a suspend, but not the main menu (but not always). A second suspend/ resume fixes this. I also noticed that this happened one of the times I booted a lucid release candidate live CD on my machine. I'm not sure but this may have something to do with the fact that I installed using a release candidate live CD instead of the proper release. (I have done all the updates).
How do you install the game 'same GNOME' in Lucid?It was my 8 yr old nephew's favorite game. It's not in Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center for Lucid.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx from Karmic (fresh install though). All of the packages I used in Karmic seem to work nicely in Lucid, with one exception gnome-rdp. I'm a sysadmin in several windows environments so as you can imagine I love the session storage and grouping features. Unfortunately gnome-rdp is not displaying the group names. it stores my session and creates the group structure just fine, it just doesn't show me the group names in the app or the right-click menu on the top panel icon. My gut says it has something to do with the new Lucid theme, but I like the new theme. Does anyone know of a config file I can edit, or something I can do to disable theme integration, just for gnome-rdp?
