Mar 28, 2010
how to install programs, that i downloaded onto my windows XP computer, and they are for linux, i downloading it off a site.i just need to learn how to install it,and i need to find a media player that plays FLV files, as well as MP3 files, with the codec preinstalled,or how to install codecs.im sorry im really new to linux, i was considering switching to Mint, is that any better for media?
Is there a program for Ubuntu that converts AVI files to VOB files? This is the only type of file that will burn to a DVD and successfully play on my DVD player. I can use DVD Flick on Windows but I'm sure this can't be the only way. There has to be a way to get VOB files on an Ubuntu operating system.
i am looking for a linux program to burn some avi files i have to be able to watch them through my dvd player onto my t.v. i have tried devede and it works but the files i used were iso files and i am not sure it would work with a avi filese?
When I install wine the add/remove program wants to install both 86_64 and i686 files. I have the x86_64 version of Fedora 14. I am having problems with counterstrike and have installed it using Wine, have noted problems when both types of files are installed.
I would like to have Fedora set up just right but as with all Linux distros, am having trouble keeping my head above water with fc14. I have success up to a point and then want to go back to Windows for its simplicity. Just this wine problem
i was using a serial console program (not minicom) two weeks back but took a break and have no idea what it is! man, it was awesome, too. it had a nice gui, similar to hyperterminal...and from what i think i remember it came packaged with f14.
I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. This is the first time I've ever dealt with linux, and was very much a spur of the moment thing (probably not ideal, I know). My laptop is only small and does not have a disc drive.I would like to install World of Warcraft onto my laptop. Usually my plan of action would be to pop the files under Program Files onto an external hard drive, then copy them over and voila.I'm not 100% sure what the Ubuntu equivalent is to Program Files. Google search suggests usr/bin, but it requires permission to move files there and I'm really not sure how to go about doing this.
On Windows I've been using XMPlayer for that purpose. XMPlayer has got a rar plugin and it works as expected.I stumbled across this plugin for Audacious but I'm not sure it's relatedhttp://kittylambda.com/rsn_plugin_for_audaciousI've ran XMPlay succesfully with wine with the rar plugin and it actually works (a bit slower but it works). But what I'm missing is integration with nautilus since drag and drop won't work from nautilus to XMPlayer. I have to navigate to the rar file manually on the file-open window and since Nautilus puts it's mounts on /home/[username]/.gvfsit's a bit cumbersome.
I want to change my OS because I need to install virtual box. But I need an OS that is capable of "bonding" good with VB (away from ram). so what os is best suitable for virtual box?
I've installed several programs. Some installed and worked, some did not. I installed Konversation and Audacity. Both work fine. When I installed bitpim via RPM downloaded from bitpim.org it installed fine. It is not in the applications area. I type Alt+F2 and i start to type in bitpim (it types the rest) and press enter. nothing happens.
i installed PythonCard through the terminal using yum install PythonCard. It installed fine and it is not in applications and is nowhere to be found. However when I type yum install PythonCard again in the terminal it says it is up to date. So I removed it and reinstalled. Same problem.
I have a laptop that I want to dual boot winxp and linux. I'd like to be able to run a mythtv frontend on it so that I can watch shows in my office and not lose the screen space on my regular desktop. I was thinking of three possible directions to go. I have a question to go with each though.
1.) This machine has an existing winxp install that I don't want to mess up, but is there something on a Fedora live cd that I could use to smashing that winxp install into a smaller space and repartitioning the drive? If so, I could just do an old fashion dual boot from the harddrive.
2.) I put a live install on a usb drive. If I do that, how do I install mythfrontend and make it persistant on the usb drive?
3.) I treat a usb drive like a regular hard drive and just do a normal fedora install, assuming the install sees the usb drive as a sd? device. I guess I don't have a question with this option, but I would rather avoid it since it will take a lot more space on the usb drive.
After installing Fedora 12, all of my programs are missing the top menus such as File, Edit, and like wise I haven't been able to figure out why this is, since it has never happened before.
i have a C program which creates an executable file in linux after that we can use that exe file and decode any file which is encoded by flatedecode algo now i have to write a C program... which reads a file.....use the above mentioned exe file and den post the decoded output.... i am in need for a code in C which can run EXE files and perform some function...
I am trying to clean up a collection of music files, often in windows i receive errors on the collection because some of the files have a "?" question mark in the file name, in windows this is not a valid character for file names. How can i search/find files with a question mark in the name? Each time i try to search for "?" i receive a list of items that match a wildcard search where ? is a wildcard. I want to find file names that actually contain the character "?".

Well I'm kinda a paranoid person, and got bored and ran a port scan from 0 to 500000 and turned up some interesting results, I was wondering how I find the programs tied to each open port. Its my computer and I'd like to very well know what programs are needing these ports and for what usage.
I am having a problem with installing mysql and mysql-workbench. I installed a group of packages related to mysql on my system and it seemed to work fine. Due to an error in my setup, I decided to uninstall all the mysql packages and start from scratch. On my second try, I was able to load all he packages except mysql-workbench
I get the following error from the Add/Remove software application. workbench-5.2.30-1.fc14.i686: failure: mysql-workbench-5.2.30-1.fc14.i686.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. why I can not get the package again to install?
What files or programs have the ability to change your default network scripts and config files? All 3 of these very important files got changed on their own.

As shown above, I am using RHEL 6, which has different libraries with Ubuntu. I tried "yum search" and installed these libraries instead: lapack.x86_64 : Numerical linear algebra package libraries blas.x86_64 : The Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms library.
