Fedora :: Can Install Programs Other Than Using The Terminal
Oct 21, 2009How can we install programs other than using the terminal. To be honest, I liked this system and I got used to it, but the problem is someone who wants to use Fedora but has no idea on how to use the terminal, so is there any other way for installing programs?

I seem to have this problem every other time I install a new Fedora. I tried a few things with old libtermcap files from other machines, and I tried looking around the YUM repository, but nothing seemed to work.
What's the proper way to get the libtermcap libraries for a Fedora 12 machine on an iCore i3?
Fedora :: Programs Not Installing Properly - How To Fix It
Jul 19, 2009I've installed several programs. Some installed and worked, some did not. I installed Konversation and Audacity. Both work fine. When I installed bitpim via RPM downloaded from bitpim.org it installed fine. It is not in the applications area. I type Alt+F2 and i start to type in bitpim (it types the rest) and press enter. nothing happens.
i installed PythonCard through the terminal using yum install PythonCard. It installed fine and it is not in applications and is nowhere to be found. However when I type yum install PythonCard again in the terminal it says it is up to date. So I removed it and reinstalled. Same problem.
Fedora Installation :: Installing Additional Programs To A USB?
Oct 14, 2009I have a laptop that I want to dual boot winxp and linux. I'd like to be able to run a mythtv frontend on it so that I can watch shows in my office and not lose the screen space on my regular desktop. I was thinking of three possible directions to go. I have a question to go with each though.
1.) This machine has an existing winxp install that I don't want to mess up, but is there something on a Fedora live cd that I could use to smashing that winxp install into a smaller space and repartitioning the drive? If so, I could just do an old fashion dual boot from the harddrive.
2.) I put a live install on a usb drive. If I do that, how do I install mythfrontend and make it persistant on the usb drive?
3.) I treat a usb drive like a regular hard drive and just do a normal fedora install, assuming the install sees the usb drive as a sd? device. I guess I don't have a question with this option, but I would rather avoid it since it will take a lot more space on the usb drive.

I am a new user of linux, and I want to know if there is a way to execute a program/application from a terminal without blocking the terminal until the program ends.

Mar 16, 2011I'm new to Fedora and the Red Hat way of doing things, having been a Ubuntu/Mint user for the last 5-6 years. I've been using Fedora for my daily computer now for the last 3-4 months - a change that has definitely been for the better! However, earlier this morning I went to install a .rpm, and yum output via terminal the following error:

This is the first time I have received this error. I've now tried the following methods of resolving this problem with no luck:
1. Code:
yum clean all
2. Code:
yum clean metadata
yum clean dbcache
yum makecache
3. Physically removing the /var/libs/yum folder, and creating a new "yum" folder, and then step two above to rebuild it. Either way the problem then still returns in terminal.
Fedora :: Terminal Command For Installing Packages Zypper / OpenSuSE?
Jun 24, 2011I'm considering making a switch from Ubuntu/Linux Mint to Fedora 15 because I just adore, love, cannot be without Gnome Shell any longer. SELinux - I actually am finding I hate this program as it blocks certain plugins (like Java), some programs I run it blocks functionality, etc. What's the best way to disable it or make it more like Ubuntu where it's pretty much permissive of everything. Common Apps I use - I haven't checked the repos, but at the least I use the following (some I know work, but I can't remember the specific ones I want to know if I need to compile or if it's in the repos)
a - Snes9x
b - PCSX Reloaded
c - KeepNote
d - libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4
e - MP4, MP3, AVI, MPEG, OGG, OGV codecs (I think I've converted any others like WMA and WMV... wait I have a few WMA files, crap)
f - Flash 64-bit - this one I have issues with SELinux wise, (reason for first question)
g - VirtualBox - it runs so much faster under Fedora so I know this one works
h - Sun Java
RPMs - Fedora uses RPMs right? Is there like an DEB Alien to convert DEBs to RPMs? Apache2 - Now maybe I found this as httpd or lightppd or something, but why isn't it listed as Apache2 in the repos? I'm more or less guessing that Fedora is not a "rolling" release, is there a variant or version that is or a repo I can enable? A software center, other than Synaptic; I'm pampered when it comes to Ubuntu Software Center and that, is there anything like that in Fedora that isn't Synaptic? What's the terminal command for installing packages, is it zypper or is that OpenSuSE?

Aug 3, 2010I can't figure this out. If i run GUI program (in GNOME) from terminal. It doesn't works the same as if i run it from menus (or shortcut on desktop or panel). Or some times I run it from Alt+F2 method.
What is the difference in this methods?
For example what is the difference if i put this...
metacity --replace
...in terminal or in ALT+F2 dialog window. If I put it in terminal. GNOME doesn't work correctly. If i put it in Alt+F2 dialog window. It works as it should. With no problems.
And what is the difference if i like to run for example FireFox or gnome-control-center from terminal or select it from menus.
If i like to run from terminal. What would be right way to do it?
Because sometimes i get errors in terminal (but GUI works) sometimes after i close terminal GUI program closes to. Sometimes it doesn't. But if i run that program from menus (icons) there is no such problem. It just works. If i put & at the end of program. I can work in terminal. But still all of the above is still true.

This worked, but now I want to remove some start up programs using the command line. Can someone point me in the right direction to what I need to do for this?
I'm assuming that default start up programs are not links in the ~/.kde/Autostart folder because when I run:

I only find the files that I have set to start up.

Sep 18, 2010I am setting up a streaming audio server. I would like to have Darkice and sc_serv (Shoutcast server) start automagically on boot.
I have set Xubuntu (10.04) to auto login
Both Darkice and sc_serv are command line apps and I would like them to each run in their own terminal window so I can monitor any status messages they produce. For instance sc_serv displays connections disconnections with time connected, and current number of listeners, and I want to see that.
One important note: sc_serv must be up and running before Darkice can be started.

Jun 7, 2011so i've just been sitting here, compiling and running some c++ programs (with g++ from the terminal), I looked away for one minute to open a file that had just been written out (opened it with gedit if that makes a difference), now my terminal says:kbuildsyscoca4 running...so I'm wondering if anyone knows what this is about?hy it suddenly started running and why it has appeared on my terminal. I'm basically just curious as I though bash shells were entirely separate virtualizations of shells, and unrepresentative of other processes. i'm also wondering what kbuildsyscoca4 is/does (i've got gnome going on and generally gnome varieties of programs). I found a post from about a year ago mentioning the same thing, though no replies.

Aug 9, 2011Trying to write a script for desktop launchers that are adaptable to screen resolution. Ideally, the program should:
1. Determine screen resolution:
if "a" use xdotool options window size 1305 x 869 px and move to 135,0
if "b" use xdotool options window size 1545 x 1019 px and move to 135,0
2. Check if program running:
if no, open program, and use "a" or "b" placement options, focus window
if yes, focus window
3. Close script and leave program open (if possible).
Problems arise when trying to use the script on programs that run from and hog the terminal
(e.g. brasero, gcalctool, nautilus)
Here the script will load the program, and nothing else (probably because it still occupies the terminal as it runs)

This next command will cause the program to load, move, but it keeps focusing itself like xdotool is running the windowmove function constantly - it keeps focusing itself until script stopped.

This had the same effect as the above code, but seems to work as a conditional subscript running when the process is running in the terminal - it just goes infinitely.

Is there some kind of "if, then" or "while, do" or some kind of conditional I can put in to the script ensure the window is moved only once if the program is running within the terminal? Is there a way to remove the program from the terminal from the script once it's been called?
