I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. This is the first time I've ever dealt with linux, and was very much a spur of the moment thing (probably not ideal, I know). My laptop is only small and does not have a disc drive.I would like to install World of Warcraft onto my laptop. Usually my plan of action would be to pop the files under Program Files onto an external hard drive, then copy them over and voila.I'm not 100% sure what the Ubuntu equivalent is to Program Files. Google search suggests usr/bin, but it requires permission to move files there and I'm really not sure how to go about doing this.
how to install programs, that i downloaded onto my windows XP computer, and they are for linux, i downloading it off a site.i just need to learn how to install it,and i need to find a media player that plays FLV files, as well as MP3 files, with the codec preinstalled,or how to install codecs.im sorry im really new to linux, i was considering switching to Mint, is that any better for media?
When I install wine the add/remove program wants to install both 86_64 and i686 files. I have the x86_64 version of Fedora 14. I am having problems with counterstrike and have installed it using Wine, have noted problems when both types of files are installed.
I would like to have Fedora set up just right but as with all Linux distros, am having trouble keeping my head above water with fc14. I have success up to a point and then want to go back to Windows for its simplicity. Just this wine problem
Is there a program for Ubuntu that converts AVI files to VOB files? This is the only type of file that will burn to a DVD and successfully play on my DVD player. I can use DVD Flick on Windows but I'm sure this can't be the only way. There has to be a way to get VOB files on an Ubuntu operating system.
I'm trying to install a program called Slam Soccer 2006 (it's original name is bolzplatz2006). Anyway, no package is available, so I'm having to install it using the tar.gz file. I've read all the Documentation that I could find on ubuntu sites, and I think I understand the extract, configure, make, install process. However, I keep getting stuck on the ./configure phase. When I type ./confiure into the command line it keeps telling me that no such command exists. I tried downloading Kludge Tarball installer so I could have a graphic interface to walk me through the problem. Everything seems fine until I get to the configure phase and I get the following message:
sh: Can't open configure
(zenity:907: Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 4 char 128: '.' is not a valid name (zenity:907: Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Error on line 4 char 128: '.' is not a valid name
I recently got a new netbook and the first thing I did was install ubuntu along side the XP install. The problem I'm running into right now is when I try to install a statistics program that I need for class I get an error. There is a popup labeled RegUtil with the error "Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument" and in the terminal window there is the message "wine: cannot find L"C:\windows\system32\netsh.exe."
Is it possible to install just one program from newer repositories? Our server is Ubuntu 10.04 but I need the newer ImageMagick which is available in the 10.10 repositories. If I use these repos, and try to apt-get install imagemagick, I am prompted to install 20 or so other new programs, which I fear will mess up the system.
I have a really old Dell computer (Dell PowerEdge 1300) that I am wanting to use as a small server (samba file server and apt-cacher-ng). I installed Ubuntu server and then did "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop" which was a bad idea because it killed the performance. So here is my question.Ive read you can split the X client and server. Would that let me run a graphical program (like Synaptic) over X without installing any sort of GUI on the Dell?If that is the case, how would I go about doing so?If I would still have to install a GUI on the Dell, what are other options since the on-board display adapter seems to struggle with graphics?
I've been trying to install MPGrafic (google it to open the package) without succeeding. (I also have in my home directory). The problem is that, in order to install it, I need the 2 version of the fftw (I've downloaded the 2.1.5 from the fftw website). I install everything in the folder /libraries (I don't have writing permission on the /usr/lib folder)
./configure --enable-mpi --enable-type-prefix --enable-float --prefix=/libraries make install
[code]....
I got an error: I need the fftw with double precision. So I think the ./configure does not read the library properly, or I need another version of the library or I need other flags.
How to install the BitTorrent peer to peer program? I've downloaded the software, looked around, and cannot find what should be obvious as to how to install and use it. Please keep it simple, as I am an amateur and quite new to Linux and Ubuntu. I'm installing onto Ubuntu 9.04 on my desktop pc. If you suggest using and installing something equivalent, the instructions need to be simple and complete.
I installed Wine no problem. Then I downloaded a Windows Chess program(ECTool) to the desktop. I right clicked on the ECTool icon and checked run with Wine. The program came up just fine and I could make moves on the chessboard, but no information was saved. I got a blank screen under games in progress. Anyone use this program or have any ideas what to do next? ECTool is listed as a program that works with Wine.
I am having a problem with installing mysql and mysql-workbench. I installed a group of packages related to mysql on my system and it seemed to work fine. Due to an error in my setup, I decided to uninstall all the mysql packages and start from scratch. On my second try, I was able to load all he packages except mysql-workbench
I get the following error from the Add/Remove software application. workbench-5.2.30-1.fc14.i686: failure: mysql-workbench-5.2.30-1.fc14.i686.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. why I can not get the package again to install?
I have rented a VPS based on CentOS5 (naturally) from Burst.net who use a front panel by vePortal.I can't access it by its own shell and am told that CentOS5 does not come with FTP or Putty access. THey must be installed by me.(I'm not sure of the support competence at the provider, so I've come to the source)I think/hope that such basics would be part of the primary OSystem? How would I install programs onto a system with no such access?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (also Classic, don't really care.) I'm trying to install [Greeting Card Factory DELUXE V7] Can anyone help me or does anyone have any clue whatsoever if this can be achieved?
I am running Linux mint 9 Isadora and do not like thunderbird email client. I have downloaded Evolution and can't get it to run. I opened it with archive manager and see many files, but it does not run.
I am trying to install a program and it spews out an error about the .obj/matrix.o file.
The output is quoted here:
Code:
The program I was trying to install is a robot simulator which performs lots of matrix manipulation and linear system solving. I followed every step in the installation guide, except for this one:
On Ubuntu, all you need to do is install the following packages from the package manager:
libblas-dev liblapack-dev
As shown above, I am using RHEL 6, which has different libraries with Ubuntu. I tried "yum search" and installed these libraries instead: lapack.x86_64 : Numerical linear algebra package libraries blas.x86_64 : The Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms library.
I want to install a program (specifically metasploit), and have it accessible from any directory in the terminal. I have it installed correctly, but I have to travel to the directory it is installed in to run it (by using ./msfconsole ). I want to be able to be in any directory and just run "msfconsole" and have metasploit run. I have to copy the metasploit folder to the /opt/ directory? Maybe the /usr/bin/ directory?
I know there is lots of documentation out there for installing tar balls but I can't make it work I am trying to work with this file sauerbraten_2009_05_04_trooper_edition_linux.tar.bz2 in file:///home/Nemesis/Downloads/sauerbraten_2009_05_04_trooper_edition_linux.tar.bz2
I am running Fedora 12, the gnome desktop if the desktop matters. I have been running Fedora almost elusively for 2 years and off n on before that but in my many attempts at trying to Install a TARBALL I have always failed hard.
I am trying to load vmware server. When running vmware-install.pl it asks where to load the bin files. Default is /usr/bin. Cool with me, so I accept then get the error: "There is insufficient disk space available in /usr/bin. Please make at least an additional 5924k available or choose another directory."
Ok, so in my searches, most cases people actually do have a full disk. I have 30gb free. Another post somewhere stated it could be the file system used, so I tried different file systems. Now I am back on etx3. What's odd is when I blow away the OS and reload and try to install VMware again, I get a different number to be "freed" in the error. Choosing another directory only yeilds a different disk space request.
i am having problem in downloading and installing nmap network scanner program in my fedora 10 machine...can any body help me from where i can download and install nmap using command line or ssh session on my fedora machine...
I have both Windows and Ubuntu on my laptop and I need to access the windows program files via Ubuntu (windows don't start). The problem is that the program files folder appears to be empty. Is there any way to retrieve data from ubuntu?
I guess the title says it all. I'm looking for a program that will rename a massive amount of files at once. JPGs specifically, or PNGs. More specifically,I'm creating a stopmotion movie. Using the program StopMotion. And for that, all you pictures, or frames, have to be named 001.jpg 002.jpg and so on. I've got about 300 or so images, and they're all named the default thing that my camera names them, you know, like DSCIM8520 or whatever. I'm looking for maybe a command line program or GUI is fine too, that will do this for me.
Any program that can monitor changes to files? I've had an issue for a while now where files will simply disappear. Specifically, FLAC files that are loaded into Rhythmbox. Once I've found the files in the Trash bin, but I've just noticed several that appear to have been missing for some time, as they were not in the Trash. Basically, I'd like something that will log the non-read activities of a given directory or directories.
I've read a few things on this forum that people can read their .cbr's but those posts were back in 2005. Is there a known problem with cbr and karmic? If not how do I fix this? I'm way behind on my comic reading since I moved to ubuntu and I need to catch up!
I haven't put this in the forums for any of the separate programs, because im having the same problem in all of them, im thinking maybe its a problem elsewhere?I recently got a Canon DSLR. It can save in Raw format, I use this function. Canons Raw format is "Whatever.CR2"F spot viewer and all editor programs see then and 'preview' them with no problem. The images appear to have no problem until you load them into GIMP (with UFRAW) UFRAW standalone, RAWStudio etc.
They load, but only as a small vertical rectangle. Often very purple in colour.I thought maybe it was something wrong with just the way it looked, so I just loaded one, went save as (a jpeg) and then loaded it up, it loaded as a small picture of the same purple-haze bar.Have I done something wrong? I googled it, downloaded UFRaw, even Ubuntu studio, same problem before and after studio installation. All these programs claim to read raw images.Just as an example, In RawStudio:I load up the folder of raw images. I can see all the images clearly with no problems in the preview slider up top. I can scroll through them and see them all no problem. When I click on one, it loads in the editing box as some weird bar (always vertical in orientation) often faintly resembling part of the photo but with seriously acid trip colours. Eg massive purple hazes, green everything etc.
Deleted a whole bunch of files, I have backed it up but it was from about 2 weeks ago and as I had added loads of stuff in the meantime I urgently need to recover the files.Ubuntu 9.10. Any and every file recovery program you know please.Preferably one that allows me to recover an entire directory, not just individual files, but it'll be fine if that is it.
Everytime I start Rhythmbox it starts to scan my USB HardDrive (which contains 50,000+ files) for media. I searched around, and it seems that there is nothing one can do stop that using any Rhythmbox options, switches, etc. Is there a way to prevent a process (in this case Rhythmbox)from using a certain resource (the path to my USB Drive)? I'm thinking APPArmor or SELinux may be the way to do it.
