I can use DVD Flick on Windows but I'm sure this can't be the only way. There has to be a way to get VOB files on an Ubuntu operating system.

Mar 13, 2009I currently run a home sever using windows server 2008. On it I'm using VMware to run 2 virtual machines (currently running CentOS (which is Red Hat based) as web and mail servers. It's not a big setup, we only host our personal websites and a couple for some friends. Although server 2008 handles resouces much better than server 2003, it's still running windows, which as we know is far more inferior to a Linux server. I'm trying to convince the husband to let me run everything on Debian, but he wants to run it on Red Hat (which okay, isn't bad but our household is devided. We have long running arguments because he likes his boxes Red Hat based running KDE, and I like my Debian distros running Gnome!)
The host server is running on a standard pc box, it's got a 2.5 gigahertz dual core processor and 3 gig of ram, almost one TB storage. (don't ask why I'm including this drastically important info!) I want to run the entire network on Debian. So that would be the main host running Debian and the two virtual machines also. The host itself would need to run as a file and app server for our home network and the two vertuals as web and mail servers. (we run about 12 domains three of which are under heavy usage with Mysql databases, so we run two servers so we can dedicate more rescources to the virtual server that sucks the most juice.) I was wondering how Debian handles virtualisation and what program(s) would be a good alternative to VMware?

Nov 1, 2010I am having serious trouble getting Debian to install over our LAN using PXE/syslinux, a custom preseed.cfg, and the files from the DVD on a webserver. I think the problem is using the files from the DVD on the webserver instead of a mirror, but I believe this should be possible. I do not have enough space on the webserver to house an entire debian mirror.

Is there a way for me to convert the postscript files into pdf format? Most window$ users will have some sort of pdf reader installed but I am still to find one user that has Ghostscript and Ghostview installed. where can I find the TTF fonts that are shipped with every standard installation of Debian? I'm sometimes forced to print files through a windows system and because the fonts loaded in that system are not the ones I use in Debian (URW Gothic L, as an example) I end up having my official documents disfigured. If I can carry around with me a ready-to-install fonts package I can get over this obstacle.

However, I noticed that there are some difference in the headers files that get generated with the above command as compared to the header files that are available from Debian repo. For example, the header files for 2.6.24 kernel have files like:

I happened to notice the above issue, while I was trying to compile a out-of-tree kernel module and the "make" command for those sources (some graphics card drm module) worked with the default header files (linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686) but did not work with (linux-headers-2.6.24-generic-ide) because it did not find the Makefile_32. Although I was able to fix the problem by copying the Makefile_32 from linux-headers-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 but I would like to know why there is a difference. This is bit of a concern because it unnecessarily breaks the out-of-tree module compilation process because of trivial reasons.

Problem is that the tiff images are in a subdirectory structure like:
Directory_x -> subdir_y -> tiff images + textfiles
How will a script look like that does following:
1. Creates the same subdirectory structure
2. Converts tiff -> jpg
3. Copyes all the textfiles
So all in all, I want to create the same subdirectory structure but with tiff converted to jpg

May 3, 2009I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

Jan 16, 2010My question here is that before installing the multilib libraries, how does a 32 bit program differ from a 64 bit. For instance, and here I am showing my ignorance, but surely if I download a program source, shouldn't the resultant binary following compiling and building be a result of the platform it is built on, or does the source code include references to whether it is a 32 or 64 bit program.
Only asking as I have just gone to Slack13_x64, and was hoping that wine might build as a 64bit program. Or, am I stuck with having to install the multilib libs?

For example I remember I have an IRC client but I don't remember its name and its name does not contain IRC. Before I had Unity, programs were organised in categories, so to find the irc I just looked in the Internet category. The same happened to me with the writer program and others..Can anyone tell me how I can find a program by its category? I was surprised that I could not many complaints like mine on the web. I don't want to give up and go back to the old gnome cause I figure that there is just a learning curve to pass and beside there are some feature in it that I like.

Mar 9, 2010i'm converting from w7 and before doing so made up a list of functions i wanted to be capable of doing in opensuse.i have most of them complete but saved the ones that gave me some problems or simply perplexed me until last.i managed to figure out ps3 media server, but still need to know how to automount my external usb drive upon boot.i have my vnc needs met with x11vnc and no probs there.
but what i'm not sure how to do is to synchronize my files between my three computers as well as how to backup my files to an offsite file service (perhaps datastorageunit). i've considered just using dropbox, which from what i've read will backup to offsite ( i used mozy on w7) as well as sync my files across my lan (goodsync handled my syncing). however, i really dont want to pay $10/mo. for 50gb of storage with dropbox when datastorageunit is only $3/mo for 100gb. datastorage unit says that rsync can be used however, even with the gui (grsync) installed i still couldn't make much head way. id rather not take the lazy/pricier way out with dropbox, but instead learn how to use grsync.
