Fedora :: Every Boot Bug Reporting Kernal Crash?
Mar 5, 2010At every boot I get an automatic bug reporting warning about the kernal. Not sure what is causing this or how to fix it. It is on a Dell d600 laptop.

Jul 4, 2011I have installed fedora13 OS on it recently,earlier it has both windows and linux but now only fedora13. My laptop's harddisk has probably some bad sectors and a software package "Automatic Bug Reporting Tool" has reported kernel crash,gnome-panel crash. I reported them upto some extent but in totality all I can't report. How to deal with it, why is it happening, and will it be harmful for any part like CPU,RAM,HardDisk of my laptop?

Aug 21, 2010I have a pc trying to install fedora. It is an amd downloaded and tried to install different versions of fedora. The latest i686 and will get to a boot screen and when selecting boot will lock up at the i386 start kernal command and blinky curser. Yes I am new to linux and may need some hand holding. I have however successfully installed fedora on other computers a while back which is why I am not sure what is going on. It may be a hardware mismatch. I will try to see if I can find another computer to install. I used a different computer and is working. The athlon computer is not working.

May 21, 2010I'm using ubnutu 9.04 for Application developments. still last two days ago. my linux starts procesing goes slow down and thats why i restart my system. but i cant login to my system normally. its goes to kernal command prompt and reading some messages like given below.,
Reading apache2 server [OK]
Reading -------------- [OK]
(NOTE : ---- means some messages like above.)
After it shows login in way of command prompt i given my username & password its redirected shell command., then i again give some instructions like startx. Then the normal pages are all appear.
Anyone Could known that process how to rectify that issue asap.
IS it possibility to boot my system with login page normally...?
Ubuntu :: Kernal Panic On Boot
Nov 20, 2010So I just installed the new linux kernel ( version 26) . On reboot there is a kernel panic with something like not able to mount root fs on 0,0. The older kernel works fine though. And btw while installing the kernel it did complain about not sufficiant space in /boot. I have got this message earlier, so I removed one of the oldest kernels. and i recently there has been package failure during installation of other packages. And one last thing, i noted that during the removal of the older kernel, there were lines in the terminal suggesting that kernel-26 had not been configured properly, so it tried to configure kernel-25 which also apparently failed.

Apr 29, 2010After I upgraded from 9.10, I restarted and waited. ubuntu boot screen froze after a little bit, and the my caplock and scrolllock started flashing (I believe this is the kernel panicking) Then I tried safe mode and it did the same thing when is was saying something about sensors. So I then went to grub and started it with an old kernel and it booted fine (without the splash screen though) what should I do?
EDIT: ok the kernel version it is not working with is version 2.6.32-21 and it does work in 2.6.31-21. Also, it now doesn't say anything about sensors. It panics after App-armor loads ans skips Firefox's profile (or something like that)
Fedora :: Crash On Boot, Also Cannot Boot Into Vista?
Feb 3, 2010I have been trying to get my Toshiba L300 to dual-boot Fedora 12 and Vista, which it came pre-installed with. I shrunk my existing partitions to create some unallocated space, then installed F12 on it from the 64bit Live CD. Everything seemed to go fine, and I was able to boot into Fedora as normal. However if I tried to boot into Vista, I would get a message to the effect of:BOOTMGR is missingRather annoyed but undeterred, I decided to cross that bridge when I came to it, and went back into Fedora to start configuring it properly. I installed the latest version of WINE, and the mp3 support, then shut down. When I tried to boot into Fedora later on, everything started as normal, then it hung on a black terminal style screen, where I can type and press return for a new line, but nothing actually happens. Pressing ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer however.
To get out of this no-working-OS-limbo, I had to break out my Vista recovery console and run fixboot. This has got rid of the bootloader and now Windows starts up fine, but obviously this does not solve the problem of not being able to boot Vista while Fedora is also installed, and not being able to run Fedora presumably (but not for certain) after I have installed WINE
Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Latest Kernal Update?
Jun 6, 2010I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.
This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.
Fedora Installation :: Nouveau Crash During Boot?
May 26, 2011Just downloaded the x86_64 iso, copied it to my USB stick and added a grub4dos entry for direct booting.

While it does mention nouveau, and I do use Nvidia graphics (PCIe GT 240) I believe the cause may be something else. Googling around leads me to a couple of forum threads that seem to relate to the core series of Intel processors, but I'm at a loss. I've also searched this forum however the search seems to either bring up every result under the sun and non seem to apply or no results at all. I know the card's supported as Ubuntu works flawlessly. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode, however the exact same thing happens.
I doubt using a USB stick in this manor would cause this problem, but if you suggest it i'll install from physical media.
I would post logs, however the shell it drops to seems to be severly limited (lacking reboot, even).
Fedora :: System Crash Then Read Error At Boot?
Feb 23, 2011I tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.
Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).
It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".
I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.
I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.
It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).
It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.
what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.
Fedora :: OS Crash On Dual-boot Vista Comp?
Feb 27, 2011This morning I started my PBell desktop (dual booting Fedora/Vista) and Fedora opened fine. I started making entries in a text file with gEdit & when I saved it took a long while to complete the save (I had only entered a few lines of text).I then created a new folder in my home folder & tried to move other folders in to the new one but suddenly all the folders disappeared and the computer hung/froze. I tried a restart but again this did not complete fully (the cursor turned into a 'brick' & the progress bar hung).
I had to switch off & when I restarted I got Disk Read error. I tried switching off/on again and got Grub cursor. I switched off & on again & this time was told to put system disc in (I do not have a disc as I installed Fedora with USB install).So I switched off and left the computer for 15 minutes & when I switched on again it started Fedora normally.I experienced similar crashes with Ubuntu10.04 dual booting with Vista & this was the reason I decided to leave Ubuntu & install Fedora. When I used Ubuntu I did a DejaDup backup & I tried to use this with the DejaDup in Fedora to restore my data to Fedora but it didn't work.It appears there is some issue with my computer running Linux (dual boot Vista)-either Fedora or Ubuntu. How do I find out what the problem with my computer is and how do I proceed now?

Jun 7, 2010I recently installed new hard drive and cloned old hard drive software onto it. The bootloader installs either linux or other operating system. Ever since the cloning, boot hangs. Words in the thread title are the last to appear before everything grinds to a halt. Just before the kernal panic message appears, "Initrd finished" is last line. Will have to try booting again to find more info before this.

Apr 15, 2011Today morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

du --max-depth=1 -xh /
to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.
Fedora Installation :: F14 Forces Pae Kernal At Install
Jan 8, 2011Im having this issue, when i install fedora 14 with the dvd image by usb it installs successfully, but its forcing the PAE kernel, if i remember correctly the PAE kernel is meant for systems with 4gb ram or better, i have an emachines w3115 with upgraded ram to 2gb ram (not sure if it matters or not but its ??dual channeled??) dual booting windows xp mce and fedora 14. is there a way to get around fedora forcing the PAE kernel at the install process?

Feb 2, 2009I am running a sever for a local community. There is arpwatch service running and monitoring for new network cards. The problem is that each day I keep getting lots of 'flip flop' reports:

I know where they come from: clients are obtaining ip addresses by DHCP, and initially are sending DHCP requests from 0.0.0.0. I am running arpwatch with a specific option to NOT report such things, but it looks like it is ignored...

Jul 18, 2011I had Fedora 13 64 bit before which was correctly reporting memory as 4GB. After I wiped off Fedora 13 and did a fresh install of Fedora 15 32 bit, the memory is reported as 3.2 GB in the system Info and also in free -mt command code...
Where is 600MB memory gone missing? I checked the BIOS setting and it correctly says total memory is 4GB.
The hardware is exactly same and I did not change anything.

Apr 29, 2010I had a problem a couple of months ago after doing an update where something went wrong with the latest Kernal but I could still use Ubuntu by selecting another Kernal, now after doing an update last night and restarting.....nothing.... the screen reads:
GNU GRUB 1.97 beta4 Minimal BASH- like line editing is supported. For the first word TAB lists possible command completions. So if I press TAB and boot it says "no Kernal" does this mean UBUNTU is no more on my machine?

Apr 7, 2009I have a system set up with Fedora 9 - the Fed10 installer choked on an older Intel video chip. I've decided to try updating to 10 in anticipation of further upgrading to 11. Reading this forum and elsewhere convinced me to try preupgrade. I started it and saw Fed10 as an available upgrade path, selected it. At that point, the system appeared to freeze -- the progress bar got about 10% along and everything sat for 10-15minutes. I exited out of preupgrade and tried the rpm path.
That didn't fly either -- I was told that there were no packages marked for upgrade. I read more about preupgrade, including the fact that it might give the appearance of having locked up although it was still working. So I went back to preupgrade. This time, Fed10 didn't show in the selection box. It was, in fact, empty except when I checked the box for beta/unstable and could see Rawhide.
How do I get back to where I was with preupgrade so that I can finish what I started? Alternatively, how can I do a 9 to 10 upgrade from this point (preupgrade grayed out and rpm reporting no packages)? I expect to further upgrade to 11 in a couple of months, so the step to 10 is necessary. I do not have a separate /home partition and I have some very expensive (and difficult to set up) software that insists on sitting in /usr/local, so a full install, though doable, isn't something I want to undertake -- I'd much prefer to do to upgrades from 9.
Fedora Servers :: Apache Updated - Reporting 2.2.0 On Any Error Page
Sep 1, 2009But after it updated and I restarted the service, it's reporting 2.2.0 on any error page. Yet through yum it's reporting 2.2.13-1. Is that normal? I've only ever used 2.2.x, starting with 2.2.6ish.

So I restart,, and it freezes before I even get the error message. Pop in the live cd, booted up from it so I can talk to my fedora friend, and the reboot to try again. Works, still hasn't froze, and I could get the actual error info.

I've been having problems with the system ever since I replaced the motherboard. Moving slow and just generally acting 'wonky.' Well the other day I reached my frustration limit and wiped the HDD. Up to this point the HDD had been in 2 partitions, one for the DELL diagnostics and one for the OS, XP Pro.
I decided that I wanted to set up the system in a dual-boot during the rebuild so I created a two partitions using the Windows install. Partition one is the DELL Diagnostic partition, partition 2 is the XP Pro partition and partition 3 is to be the Linux partition. All seemed to go well with the Windows install. I got the OS up and running and got all the updates done and drivers installed.
I only have the one HDD in the system so I was going to have to make this dual-boot off of one HDD.
I had previously, within the past week or two, downloaded the .iso and created the disk for FC11.
I went through the install process and successfully installed Linux on the 3rd partition, or so I thought. When I attempted to boot into Linux I got the Kernal Panic error.
My grub file as it exists now is:

If I leave the file as is, I get the kernal panic error but the splash image works fine. If I try to change the 'splash image' and 'root' references from '(hd0,2),' then neither works.
I can boot into Windows XP from the setup as it is now.
I if I boot using my LoaS (FC 11 made at the same time as the images for the cds were downloaded) I can see the hdd and multiple partitions. There seems to be a 'boot' partion, the Linux OS partition, a swap partion, as well as the Dell and XP partions. Now I've tried changing the references in the grub file to reflect the different partitions, basically I've tried 2, 3, 4 and 5, everything but 0 (the dell diagnostics) and 1 (the XP Pro).
I've also re-wiped the HDD and started the whole process over from scratch, thinking maybe I'd hosed something up the first time, but being a firm believer in 'Always do what you've always done and you'll always get what you've always gotten,' and that one of the definitions of insanity it keep performing the same actions over and over and expect different results, I seem to be at impasse here.

Jun 14, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

Feb 11, 2010I have an alienware m17x laptop with 2 hardrives, on primary is win7 and on secondary is ubuntu 9.10. The problem I have is if I boot (using Grub) into linux it crashes before the ubuntu logo pops up and locks up completely, needing a hard reset. If I boot linux again, all is fine. I can't copy the text that comes up when it crashes, is this logged anywhere so that I can post it? The same thing kind of happens in win7, on first boot (via Grub) I get the windows logo for about a second then BSOD and it reboots (so fast I can't see the error). If i boot again into win7 it boots fine.
