Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?
Jun 14, 2011
I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit and I'm a fairly new linux user. I've been trying to set up Grsync to to make incremental backups to my external harddrive but have some problems. In the file lists it looks like files are actually being copied but when I look at the harddrive none of the new files are actually there. As far as I can understand I'm not making a dry-run. I also found this thread: [URL] And I tried using the commands suggested in that post, with the same results.
I am running version 5.5. I am using Grsync to back up 2 folders to an USB external 1.5 terabyte drive. Sometimes grsync backs the folders up correctly but most of the time, I need to unmount and then mount the drive to get it to work.
I've been using grsync to backup my home directory to an external drive (connected via USB), but lately I've been getting errors very early in the process and I was hoping someone might be able to help me fix them (or at least understand what I'm doing wrong).
Here's the output of a window titled "rsync: stopped" and in red "completed with errors!" rsync: write failed on "/media/LaCie/myhomefolder/.cache/champlain/osm-mapnik/6/12/23.png": Input/output error (5) kyconway/.cache/champlain/osm-mapnik/6/12/26.png rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(322) [receiver=3.0.8] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (486 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(601) [sender=3.0.8] Rsync process exit status: 12
I'm trying to sync a folder between my Windows install and my PCLinux install. Same machine, Windows 7 on the C drive and Linux on an external USB hard drive.
Using the Grsync GUI, I searched for the source and destination folders, and then executed the command. Here is the output:
I would like to setup grsync to auto backup me xp desktop and win7 laptop.I have setup samba and can access the directories on the ubuntu server.I can see the desktop and laptop on the network from the server. But when I try to find the machines i want to backup in source in grsync they are not there. What should the permissions be on the windows machines?
I am still struggling with implementing my exclusions, from this thread:url
Backups via Grsync are OK, but I want to exclude a bunch of hopefully-useless stuff, like thumbnails, trash, cache etc.
It looks easy here: url(last post) url
So I had a first attempt, to exclude the ".thumbnails" folder.I created a text file "exclusions" in "/home/me/.grsync".In that file, I wrote "-.thumbnails/".In Grsync Advanced Options, I wrote "--exclude-from=/home/me/.grsync/exclusions".Simulation results showed no red errors but no good results.Execution showed the .thumbnails folder still present.
I tried manually deleting the .thumbnails folder from the backup & rerunning Grsync, but it puts all the thumbnails back.
I changed the "exclusions" file to say just "-.thumbnails" (I really am not familiar with CLI syntax) but that does not work either.
I'm trying to backup a whole startup disk to another with GRSYNC but I don't need some files or directories. For example, I don't want to backup my 'swapfile1' (I do not have a dedicated swap partition) or the 'media' directory' in order to no enter a looping sync.I've searched the web for the correct syntax of the --exclude command but none have worked if applied in the advanced option "before" rsync starts. These a sample of NOT workin syntaxes:
exclude /media or -- exclude 'media' or -- exclude "media"
same for swapfile1:
exclude swapfile1 or -- exclude 'swapfile1' or -- exclude "swapfile1"
I recently decided to partition my laptop wholly to ubuntu, so i installed ubuntu without any problem, then i logged on for the first time and i installed the driver to my monitor (nvidia) and i did sudo apt-get update which made me get all sorts of updates, untill the updating stopped at about halfway asking me to reboot the system.
I rebooted the system, but no matter what i do, if i run it in recovery mode or not, i always get stuck on this piece of code on a black screen:
Code: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 /dev/sda1: clean, 148123/18841600 files, 1880615/75358899 blocks init: udevtrigger main process (540) terminated with status 1 init: udevtrigger post-stop process (541) terminated with status 1 init: udevmonitor main process (539) killed by TERM signal init: networking main process (544) terminated with status 1
Also, please no answers like "hav u tried liek reinstalling ubuntu lolz?" because i wouldn't bother posting this thread if i considered doing that -_-'
I'm using Gnome Time Tracker 2.3.0 to track the time I spend on projects, it works fine except that my system just crashed and it does not show my recently tracked projects any more. does any one know of a way I can get this information back, it's quite important.
I installed debian stretch with cinnamon, I logged into it for the first time, It had no hardware acceleration and another driver was missing so I installed linux-firmware-nonfree and firmware-realtek.After reboot the screen turns black immediately and the entire system fails (keyboard isn't responding to anything).I've since tried to briefly switch to the proprietary ati driver and after a standard installation followed by aticonfig --initial. It showed the graphical login screen fine but logging in resulted in a blank desktop. It might be worth mentioning that I've encountered similar problems with other distros that use newer packages.I don't care whether the driver is proprietary or not, I just want a working display.
I just installed OpenSuse 11.3 (I had tried an update from 11.2, but it was clearly not working so I did a fresh installation from scratch even removing my .kde/.kde4 directories) on my Dell latitude E4300.
The X11 server (or KDE?) is clearly not working properly: 1- the display settings are never saved whatever I do (I have two screens and it goes to a stupid 1024x768 automatically although the 1900x1200 for the big screen is the "Auto" option)2- after some time, the X11 server goes mad: changing from desktop 1 to 2 etc it flashes, blinks, sometimes does not go through or goes from 1 to 2 and back. The windows are not refreshed, sometimes it goes all black or grey. to be frank this is the worst upgrade I have done in ages. Is there any reason for such crazy behaviour from x11/KDE? I have:
* OpenSuse 11.3 last update (stable) running x86_64 version * Mobile Intel Gm45 Express Chipset, mobile 4 series chipset integrated graphics controller * LCD monitor (MT291 133Ev3) + attached DELL 2408 WFP * kernel-desktop 2.6.34.7-0.3.1-x86_64, kernel-firmware 20100617-2.2-noarch
every time when /usr/bin/puplet try to talk to yum-updatesd via D-Bus, yum-updatesd will crash. After restart of yum-updatesd and call /usr/bin/puplet from the console I get this message;

ive searched the forums and web for info on this but i am stumped.not unusual since i started to use linux.gparted crashes after about 3 seconds of grayed out screentime.here is my terminal readout after entering sudo gparted command.tenza@tenza-desktop:~$ sudo gparted
I'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.
I'm using Grsync and I want to be able to plug in any drive into my laptop and run rsync on it to back up all the user documents on there to another external hdd and to exclude everything else. Working on the principle that user documents don't always appear where we'd expect I want rsync to look through the whole drive and filter what it backs up by file type. I am only having partial success, however.
I am using the 'filter' option in the 'additional options' box. I am using the command Code: filter='merge /home/tim/Desktop/filter' and I am attaching the filter file I have written. (I have added the .txt extention to upload it).
I have tested this script on my home folder and here's what's going wrong. Rsync will copy the entire directory structure regardless of whether there are any files to be copied over in those directories. I am also getting only some file types getting included and not others. .odt and .ods files are copied, for instance, but not .doc or .rtf.
I'm using centos 5, kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5I have occasional server network problems (the NIC driver will basically crash/restart causing no connectivity for a period of time) due to the marvell sky2 NIC driver being a problem, as discussed here: This essentially means the server is unreliable when under any kind of reasonable load, to put it mildly.Worse still, the driver problem has not been resolved in 2.6.18.x - but it seems to have been resolved in the latest Linux kernels.I really don't want to compile the kernel from source, etc, but it looks like I may have no choice. Is there a repo which has a pre-compiled 2.6.20+ or 2.6.30+ kernel which I can use,
I just updated my ubuntu to 11.4 and restart but it stop on "Checking battery state. [OK]" line while start up. However it starts in recovery mode -> low graphical configuration mode. Is there any solution for this?
So I puts my shinny new F12 install on my new computer. It's a little climb for me but for the most part easier then some of the other F's that I have tried to install.
One problem I have right now is my inkscape crashes as soon as I try to put some text on a page. I tried the automatic bug report thingy but it complained about me not having a log in. inksacpe is really becoming a very important application for me, I have been trying to shy away from the Windows programs I have been using.
I must say, F12 seems to really be advancing the fedora project into a nice desktop system.
after mistyping my session passwd at the kdm login, I retried again and the greeter instantaneosly crashed and X died on tty1 (black screen, blinking cursor in upper left corner) Switching to tty2, I tried to login again but did not succeed to start X again, so I rebooted the system and looked at Xorg.0.log.old. There I found: xf86CloseConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call
Here we go again!
P.S.: I do not know how long this error exists, I noticed it only yesterday and the updates today didn't help.
I have recently installed Fedora 9 about a dozen times and everytime I apply the recommended system updates, the system crashes upon reboot, leaving me at a dead "GRUB" message (not a prompt). I would love to be able to update my version; suggestions?
Fedora 10 64bit install from DVD. Working my way through the how to's, this is my first linux experience! When I choose the user switcher > other OR system > Logout user > Switch user my system goes to a blank screen and I can only get it back by using the reset switch (or power off)If user1 logs out, user2 can then log on and vise versa.I can go to applications > terminal as user1 and su user2 no problem ( and back to user1)but if I use the user switcher = problem.I am fairly sure that the users are set up correctly, they all work individually.I searched the forums and there seems to be no current similar problems mentioned. My system is a gigabyte GA K8VM800M (onboard graphics and sound) AMD Sempron 1GB ram 40GB HD I used the DVD to install on to previously used HD with no other OS on it, I chose the 'use the whole hard drive for fedora' option and had no reported problems with the install.Have I got something set up incorrectly? or where should a look for help on this.
after playing games using WINE, I noticed that the system went Black screen of death.
I had to hard boot the system and now system is hanging. However, I can ssh into the system from another machine so I know only X windows hung.
I can log in using NX client without any issue, but can not log in from the console.
This is the entry from .xsession-errors: GNOME_KEYRING_SOCKET=/tmp/keyring-4P86Nb/socket SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-4P86Nb/socket.ssh Window manager warning: Failed to read saved session file /home/stranger/.config
Almost everyday my notebook freezes. I know the kernel is still up and running because I see my hd led activity lit from time to time and when I pressed the wifi/bluetooth button it also lit on and off with no problem.
The problem is my XWindows, it's just freezes and there's nothing I can do with it. I still can move my mouse cursor but I can't click anything because the screen is just freezes.
I tried to pressed Ctrl + Alt + F2->F5 to go into console mode. Not working.
The only workaround is turn-off and turn it on again.
This happened after I installed F11. with F10 I have never seen such problem
I have a crash that occurred after first install while updating. The update was 1.2GB Had to reboot 5 times to complete the update downloading process. Much of what I read suggests KDE, xorg and qemu as part of what is causing the crash, but I haven't found a similar issue. After the update completed installation the crashes were less severe but still occur when updating.
Code: yum update The latest crash occurred after yum update and left a large amount of information in konsole. It disables wireless networking so not sure how the bug is related. During the first yum update I had to reboot the system to get full functionality back. After the first update I just had to wait for system to return to normal.

I upgraded from F12 i686 to F13 (I should say clean install). And now ever so often my computer locks up...... I will wait for an update or something this week but if it continues after I may have to go back to F12 (on another HDD)
I tried upgrade with dvd media and preupgrade from F12 but in both cases there is anaconda exception. I have dual boot windows xp (/dev/sda1) and F12 (/dev/sda2).
