Ubuntu :: 9.10 64 Bit And Win7 Crash On First Boot

Feb 11, 2010

I have an alienware m17x laptop with 2 hardrives, on primary is win7 and on secondary is ubuntu 9.10. The problem I have is if I boot (using Grub) into linux it crashes before the ubuntu logo pops up and locks up completely, needing a hard reset. If I boot linux again, all is fine. I can't copy the text that comes up when it crashes, is this logged anywhere so that I can post it? The same thing kind of happens in win7, on first boot (via Grub) I get the windows logo for about a second then BSOD and it reboots (so fast I can't see the error). If i boot again into win7 it boots fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Win7 - Bitlocker And TPM - Without The Usb-stick The Pc Won't Boot

Oct 18, 2010

I have searched and read threads about the Bitlocker, grub and TPM issues that might show up, but I can't draw any conclusions as some information contradict each other. To make sure I don't screw up my pc as thought I need to make a new post.

At work I'm supposed to run Windows 7 and encrypt the win-partition with Bitlocker. I have installed Windows, turned on the encryption and it ties into the TPM. But as I am moving over to the *nix department I want to run Ubuntu as dual boot to check everything rusn fine with all the systems I need. Before I installed Windows I partioned the disk:

1,5 GB for system/bitlocker requirement
147 GB for Windows, C:
85 GB which is empty where I intend to install Ubuntu (not formated yet)

I boot into Windows with my bitlocker/TPM key on an USB-stick. Without the usb-stick the pc won't boot. Now, before I try to install Ubuntu I want to make sure to do it the right so I don't mess up the Windows installation or won't be able to boot the pc at all.

There seem to be several "schools" to this. Some suggest I should have installed Ubuntu first, then Windows and then encrypt. Some say, no worries just fire away and install since you are not planning to read the windows-partition from Ubuntu. Or an alternative, install but make sure to deactive the encryption during installation. Some say, install but make sure grub is installed in (multiple choices) location.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - Win7 Not Being Able To Boot Anymore

Apr 29, 2011

So we install Windows 7 home premium. Then in goes the Ubuntu Disk. Ubuntu seems to think that the windows 7 partition is one big lump of unallocated space. Tried multiple re-installs of Windows 7, all concluding the same. A bit of googling told me that it has something to do with partition tables or something. I even tried to use Gdisk to delete Gpt from the windows disk, which - as I have absolutely no idea what any of it means, - resulted in me screwing up the entire Win7 partition hence win7 not being able to boot anymore.

i've seen on the internet include a lot of technical garble which I don't understand. I've been using Linux for a while, but as far as partitioning and dual booting is concerned, it's always gone smoothly for me up until now

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Into SuSE (Dual Boot With Win7)?

May 26, 2011

I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.

So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4

After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:

1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.

2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link

Ubuntu :: Triple Boot 9.10 / XP And Win7?

Jan 19, 2010

I've decided to triple boot on my system, but I want to make sure it's feasible. Here's my set-up: I've got two 500GB hard drives, and a good amount of power to handle the OS's. I want to set-up Ubuntu as my main OS on a single hard drive. Then, I want to put XP and 7 on the second hard drive, side-by-side. Obviously, I would then want a bootloader to display an option at system start to pick either one.

The reason I want all these is for gaming mainly, and Netflix. I've got old games that only work on XP, and some newer games are coming out that I'm sure will run better on Windows 7 (Starcraft 2 is going to be amazing!). I found this documentation: [URL]. It's obviously for dual booting Windows and Ubuntu. My question is, can I triple boot Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7? If so (and I'm positive I can) are there any good resources for the process?

Ubuntu :: Creating A Win7 Boot USB?

Sep 21, 2010

I've spent the past several hours trying to determine how I can mount a Windows 7 ISO onto my USB drive using Ubuntu. I have followed this post, as it is the only thing that came up on Google after hours of searching (mostly it shows how to make a Ubuntu USB drive on Windows, not vice versa.)

Using the method in that post, it seems like I was successful. However, after a few seconds it gave me an error like this.

Code:
Load Driver

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD dive, you can safely remove it for this step.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot Win7 With 10.04 Or 10.10?

Jan 22, 2011

My wife wants Ubuntu dual booted on her new Acer laptop which has Windows 7. My question: Is 10.10 stable enough to put on her computer? We have used Ubuntu for a number of years and have always stayed current with upgrades, but I have become leery lately of rushing into new versions of Ubuntu. I had too many problems when I upgraded to the last couple of times. I'm inclined to put 10.04 on her computer unless I can be assured that 10.10 is good to go. Or would I be well-advised to move back a version or two?

Fedora :: Crash On Boot, Also Cannot Boot Into Vista?

Feb 3, 2010

I have been trying to get my Toshiba L300 to dual-boot Fedora 12 and Vista, which it came pre-installed with. I shrunk my existing partitions to create some unallocated space, then installed F12 on it from the 64bit Live CD. Everything seemed to go fine, and I was able to boot into Fedora as normal. However if I tried to boot into Vista, I would get a message to the effect of:BOOTMGR is missingRather annoyed but undeterred, I decided to cross that bridge when I came to it, and went back into Fedora to start configuring it properly. I installed the latest version of WINE, and the mp3 support, then shut down. When I tried to boot into Fedora later on, everything started as normal, then it hung on a black terminal style screen, where I can type and press return for a new line, but nothing actually happens. Pressing ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer however.

To get out of this no-working-OS-limbo, I had to break out my Vista recovery console and run fixboot. This has got rid of the bootloader and now Windows starts up fine, but obviously this does not solve the problem of not being able to boot Vista while Fedora is also installed, and not being able to run Fedora presumably (but not for certain) after I have installed WINE

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot Into Win7 After Resizing Partition

Mar 11, 2010

Today I was messing around with my partitions, and I decided to shrink my main partition that had Windows on it, so that I would could have one big storage partition and then a Windows 7 one and a Ubuntu one. Well, it didn't really work so I decided just to wait for Lucid to come out and start with a fresh install. So I went into EASEUS Partition Manager and resized my main Windows 7 partition back to its normal size. It had to reboot and did its stuff, and then when I restarted my computer, grub was showing the grub rescue> thing. So I went into the Windows 7 recovery disk, and tried all the BootRec.exe options. None of those worked. So I decided to go to the extreme and just delete Ubuntu completely.

I deleted the entire partition with GParted and then resized the main partition all the way. Then I booted into a Ubuntu live usb and re-installed Ubuntu. I thought it would just reinstall Grub and I would be able to get to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. It did install Grub, but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. It's really weird, because I can boot into windows, it just says starting windows and does the loading thing. And then EASEUS Partition Manager comes and says that all resize operations were complete successfully(because I hadn't booted into windows since I resized stuff with it) and then the screen just stays black for a long time. I don't know what to do. If I wait long enough, my computer just reboots...

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Win7 After Upgrade From 9.10

May 18, 2010

I had 9.10 installed for a long time as a dual boot with win7 on this computer. I mostly use win7, but today i went into ubuntu and it said there was a new version available so i installed it.the error occured with the grub installation. it said if i was unsure of where to install it, i should install it on all drives, so I did. ever since then i've been looking online using this liveCD to find some solution to fix the problem, but I cant.here is what i've tried:

1. i downloaded a windows 7 repair disc and used the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but this ends up with a blank screen with a cursor blinking.
2. I've tried re-installing grub, but this ends with the boot freezing at a screen with something like: "sh:grub>" and i can't do anything.
3. I've tried testdisk but this also didn't work for me.

i've been trying to fix this problem for 7 hours now but nothing. so i'm hoping maybe someone here would help my specific situation out.the current status of my computer: i have uninstalled grub in sda1 and sda5 (my ubuntu should be in sda5) and i used the windows7 repair CD to /fixboot and /fixmbr, so now when i boot, it freezes at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. anyone can help me, please?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Win7 After Installing 10.10

Dec 25, 2010

I had win 7 installed, decided to install ubuntu on this desktop computer. I had a windows partition, and a few other partitions, one with a wubi install of windows that I never used, so I decided to delete it, while installing ubuntu 10.10. I had free unallocated space for installing ubuntu, which was contiguous to the partition of the wubi install of ubuntu, so I decided to merge them, I did all this in gparted while installing ubuntu 10.10, 2gb swap, then 15gb root and all that remained to home.

Everything worked out fine (of course I never touched the win7 partition). After reboot grub doesn't show win 7, so I thought I'll just add it to grub, followed a few tutorials on this forum, but nothing worked. Then I remembered that the partition which I deleted to merge with the ubuntu partition, was an Active partition, and soon found out that my win7 partition was not active! (this is probably because I installed win 7 while I had still win vista, so that active partition was where vista was).

So now a ~100mb apparently unallocated partition was the active partition (win 7 hidden boot partition?), and trying the Startup repair of win 7 cd doesn't work, tried bootrec /fixboot, successfully, but bootrec /rebuildbcd can't find any Windows installation, even after setting the win7 partition as active with DiskPart. This is almost entirely a windows problem, but I just wanted to have Ubuntu working alongside Windows (I use a lot adobe's sw, which runs sadly only on windows, otherwise I would use only ubuntu).

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot 10.10 And Win7?

Feb 11, 2011

I've tried this a couple of times and can't load Ubuntu. Here's the scenerio, I have 3 partitions.

/dev/sda1 = ntfs (Win7)
/dev/sda2 = ext4 with the / mount point
/dev/sda3 = swap space

I've some tutorials where I need a /boot partition as well and others where I just need the root partition. At the bottom, there is a drop down box for you to select the device for boot loader installation. Those options include /dev/sda, /dev/sda1 (Win7) and /dev/sda2.

I need to do to get the dual boot working? My first thought is to install the boot loader onto /dev/sda but I'm unsure. It keeps booting Win7 and can't get the option to load Ubuntu.
