I have been trying to get my Toshiba L300 to dual-boot Fedora 12 and Vista, which it came pre-installed with. I shrunk my existing partitions to create some unallocated space, then installed F12 on it from the 64bit Live CD. Everything seemed to go fine, and I was able to boot into Fedora as normal. However if I tried to boot into Vista, I would get a message to the effect of:BOOTMGR is missingRather annoyed but undeterred, I decided to cross that bridge when I came to it, and went back into Fedora to start configuring it properly. I installed the latest version of WINE, and the mp3 support, then shut down. When I tried to boot into Fedora later on, everything started as normal, then it hung on a black terminal style screen, where I can type and press return for a new line, but nothing actually happens. Pressing ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer however.
To get out of this no-working-OS-limbo, I had to break out my Vista recovery console and run fixboot. This has got rid of the bootloader and now Windows starts up fine, but obviously this does not solve the problem of not being able to boot Vista while Fedora is also installed, and not being able to run Fedora presumably (but not for certain) after I have installed WINE
I have an alienware m17x laptop with 2 hardrives, on primary is win7 and on secondary is ubuntu 9.10. The problem I have is if I boot (using Grub) into linux it crashes before the ubuntu logo pops up and locks up completely, needing a hard reset. If I boot linux again, all is fine. I can't copy the text that comes up when it crashes, is this logged anywhere so that I can post it? The same thing kind of happens in win7, on first boot (via Grub) I get the windows logo for about a second then BSOD and it reboots (so fast I can't see the error). If i boot again into win7 it boots fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm writing for my brother who was running Karmic on a Microtel desktop. He'd been having trouble with blank cds (data cds and dvds didn't cause this problem) crashing his box so he uninstalled and then installed udev package. Now when he tries to boot the box goes into a memory test and then reboots into the memory test over and over. He tried to check the installed kernels to choose one that might boot but there are none listed (he pressed "esc" to see the list-it's empty). He tried booting from a live cd and that won't work either. The cd drive spins but nothing else.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am on dual boot alongside windows 7 (which works fine). However, when I try to boot into linux I get a few minutes of the ubuntu icon. (sorry for lack of technical terminology). After a few minutes i get terminal sort of screen saying:

/dev/sda5: clean, 165561/625856 files, 984444/2502115 blocks
I have attempted to boot from the live cd I installed from and there is no system response from it. How to either uninstall linux from here or just to get it to boot.
I have a custom compiled kernel which seems to work OK. However, during boot, I get:
Apr 27 21:16:14 poni kernel: eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95784M) rev 5784100] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:21:70:90:2d:6c

System continues to boot OK and everything seems to work fine as I expect. I am not sure what the above causes. It looks related to USB, but I am not sure. lsusb gives:

Was running the upgrade through the manager this morning and the download got about 3/4 of the way and froze up making the system unresponsive I left this for an hour to see if it would resolve its self but no luck so as the installation hadn't begun I hit the power button. BIG mistake now when I try boot to 9.10 it hits a black screen with white ubuntu logo much like 9.10 but no loading bar. it just hangs at this now. I am currently posting this from a live usb I made from an ISO of 10.4 i downloaded on my girl friends windows machine. Is it possible to either fix the 9.10 installation or update the files on the 9.10 installation to 10.4 from the live disk(I have the option to make a 9.10 live disk if needed)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedLast night I switched from Lucid Ubuntu to Lucid Xubuntu. Whenever I switch on, I get a flash of several error messages on the boot screen; then few seconds when the screen turns all the colours of the rainbow, as if the display was damaged. Then it loads normally and seems fine.
This happened occasionally under Lucid Ubuntu, but don't recall it happening when I was using Karmic Ubuntu.
It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, and might even goad me to dig out my old Karmic boot disc. Say it ain't so!
My laptop is an eMachines (acer) E625. But I doubt it is related to the hardware.
I installed Natty Narwhal yesterday and everything was fine.Today, however, I installed some updates.I tried restarting my computer but it never gets to the desktop. It keeps crashing and looping back, if that makes sense.I can't start in fail-safe graphics mode either.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Linux mint and it failed on grub, if I press something grub crash, tired of that I install Ubuntu but my surprise was the same problem on grub, I was thinking if grub2 was the problem, so I tried grub legacy and was the same x_x
I remember use a old version of ubuntu with lilo (or was opensuse) but it works! but neither last ubunt nor mint with grub
Grub loader: select OS If I press ANY key it crash, if I wait the 9 seconds it enter to default OS (first option)
Note: It is neither PS2 nor USB keyboard, it's a laptop keyboard, a Compaq presario 2100

I previously managed to install Ubuntu 9.04 using the regular Live-CD by using the no-ahci option. Now I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 LTS with an alternate install CD but even tho when i use the same options, I get a black screen then everything messes up and I get this: This is a video of what happens: [URL]
So I downloaded the regular installation CD and I had a big surprise again...The same thing happens except that its not white but purple. No matter which option I select its still the same. Note that this did the same thing when I tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 with the Alternate CD. I have a SiS motherboard. I tried OpenSuse just for the fun of it and it works!!! But the things is I don't like OpenSuse I would really like to make it work with Ubuntu.
Not having a good night. Typing away on some code and load & run my latest changes in chrome, mouse starts lagging and system slows right down, ok maybe it's a bug in chromeI close chrome, try to get to a terminal to kill processes, no luck, go away for a while and come back hoping it sorts itself out, still frozen so I reboot. Now I get a horrible crash almost immediately on boot with a bunch of cryptic numeric error codes then:
Begin: Running /scripts/local-bottom
...
mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
[code]....
I'm on stretch and have faced system crashes multiple times during the boot, when my system was hibernating.
How may I get to the cause of this issue and how could I correctly report it?
At every boot I get an automatic bug reporting warning about the kernal. Not sure what is causing this or how to fix it. It is on a Dell d600 laptop.

While it does mention nouveau, and I do use Nvidia graphics (PCIe GT 240) I believe the cause may be something else. Googling around leads me to a couple of forum threads that seem to relate to the core series of Intel processors, but I'm at a loss. I've also searched this forum however the search seems to either bring up every result under the sun and non seem to apply or no results at all. I know the card's supported as Ubuntu works flawlessly. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode, however the exact same thing happens.
I doubt using a USB stick in this manor would cause this problem, but if you suggest it i'll install from physical media.
I would post logs, however the shell it drops to seems to be severly limited (lacking reboot, even).
I've got a Dell Latitude E6510. I've got FC13 and Windows 7 dual booting on the machine. Both were living in harmony with one another, no problem. Only issue I was having, was that when I plugged my external 19" dell monitor, my linux would do 1 of 2 things..
1) if plugged up prior to boot, it would black screen after the fedora boot screen that shows the blue heart
2) if plugged up post boot, it would freeze the computer
The last thing I did to troubleshoot the issues was install system-display-config, maximized the screen resolution in the settings of that app, and set the resolution to 1650 x 900 (i think it was 900, not sure). After reboot, I now get the screen below after the fc blue heart screen loads.
I installed the last CentOS x86 with Gnome on an IBM Netfinity 5600 Server but after the install, at the reboot, when X start i got many colors bars with the X cursor of the mouse in center of the screen and the server is frozen.I looked if the good display driver was load, and it all right.Booting at runlevel 3, but nothing more.. same problem when i start the configuration or X.By the way, i'm new here so please, don't judge me for my knowledge.Usually I was using Slackware)Here the specs for the server:-2x PIII 800 CPU-1024Mb RAM-6x SCSI HDD 18.5Gb in RAID 5-Graphic card: S3 Trio3D 4MbIs the card too low in RAM to run X?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.
Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).
It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".
I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.
I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.
It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).
It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.
what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.
This morning I started my PBell desktop (dual booting Fedora/Vista) and Fedora opened fine. I started making entries in a text file with gEdit & when I saved it took a long while to complete the save (I had only entered a few lines of text).I then created a new folder in my home folder & tried to move other folders in to the new one but suddenly all the folders disappeared and the computer hung/froze. I tried a restart but again this did not complete fully (the cursor turned into a 'brick' & the progress bar hung).
I had to switch off & when I restarted I got Disk Read error. I tried switching off/on again and got Grub cursor. I switched off & on again & this time was told to put system disc in (I do not have a disc as I installed Fedora with USB install). So I switched off and left the computer for 15 minutes & when I switched on again it started Fedora normally.I experienced similar crashes with Ubuntu10.04 dual booting with Vista & this was the reason I decided to leave Ubuntu & install Fedora. When I used Ubuntu I did a DejaDup backup & I tried to use this with the DejaDup in Fedora to restore my data to Fedora but it didn't work.It appears there is some issue with my computer running Linux (dual boot Vista)-either Fedora or Ubuntu. How do I find out what the problem with my computer is and how do I proceed now?
Bug-buddy tells me vmware-user crash on every-time I boot up. I don't know what to do about this just pop-up without i changed anything on my machine. I saved a "crash report" on the desktop but couldn't understand what was the "problem" when I read it.
Opensuse 11.3 gnome.
My Debian Lenny server crashed today for some inexplicable reason, and now one of my machines refuses to mount NFS shares on bootup. Manual mounting works fine. It's just one machine; the others are still mounting normally.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am on debian jessie. I ran "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and midway through the upgrade my computer suddenly rebooted.
I wasn't paying close attention to the upgrade process so I didnt see if there was any error messages right before the reboot. The laptop was plugged in, fully charged and I've never had issues with overheating.
When I boot now I get to a shell with a message that says:
Code: Select allWelcome to emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
If I try "systemctl default" there's a message that simply says "Hangup", nothing else happens.
Looking through "journalctl -xb" I see this:
Code: Select allFailed to insert module 'autofs4'
Failed to open /dev/autofs: No such file or directory
Failed to initialize automounter: No such file or directory
Failed to set up automount Arbitrary Executable File Formats File System Automount Point.

If I retry "apt-get upgrade" it says:
Code: Select alldpkg was interrupted, you must maually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem
If I run "dpkg --configure -a" stops at the package cups-browsed with message saying "Hangup"
Output of a few commands I saw in another forum thread:

Is this fixable without jumping through too many hoops or should I just reinstall the system? I need the computer for work so Im not gonna spend days trying to fix it without reinstalling.
I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.
Code:
Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?
I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
you're playing a game like Supertuxcart or Open Arena and the screen freezes which hints at something that has crashed.Well this happened this weekend when my mate's kids were playing those games on my laptop running Ubuntu 9.10.
All I could think of to resolve the issue was to hit the Power Button and restart my laptop. I am assuming that this is not exactly a good thing to do but at the time I could not think of anything else to do seeing as the screen froze and I could not use the mouse or pressing any buttons.Anybody got any ideas on how to un crash an application with out hitting the power button and forcing a re-boot?
I've recently posted here about ubuntu crashing on boot (black screen).
However, when I try to watch a .avi movie with VLC I get the black screen again.
I have a dell inspiron 510m laptop and am using i915.modeset=1 to boot. It has an intel 855 graphic chipset
EDIT: just checked, crashes with regular movie player aswell
My desktop has suddenly refused to load. I had applied some updates last week. My PC worked fine on Sunday but on Monday when I booted it the system froze at the point where the login screen should appear. The keyboard does not respond to Caps-lock or Crt-Atl-{Del,Backspace}. I can boot into recovery-mode but once I startx I get the same probem.
If I use a slightly older kernel and try to startx I get the desktop backup-ground colour but nothing else, no mouse cursor or menus.
I can't find any problems reported in the logs. Can anyone give me some trouble-shooting tips or have any idea on what I might be able to do?
Sorry if I am short of details but I have to write this from work now that the desktop is dead and I don't have all the details to hand.
Can anyone offer any pointers?
Since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 I have been unable to use Emacs23. Upon starting Emacs, it immediately causes X to crash and I am returned to the login screen.I thought of looking for a log file and providing it here or in a Launchpad post to shed some light on the problem, but I don't know which log I could provide (if there is one).
