Fedora :: Automatic Bug Reporting Tool Blinks Indicating A Bug In Python 2.6.2-2.fc12
Dec 14, 2009I have been trying to run Yumex under F12, x86_64. It always crashes when it finishes to resolve the repositories and then the Automatic Bug Reporting tool blinks indicating a bug in python 2.6.2-2.fc12. Anyone else has seen the same bug? What have you done to solve it?

Jul 4, 2011I have installed fedora13 OS on it recently,earlier it has both windows and linux but now only fedora13. My laptop's harddisk has probably some bad sectors and a software package "Automatic Bug Reporting Tool" has reported kernel crash,gnome-panel crash. I reported them upto some extent but in totality all I can't report. How to deal with it, why is it happening, and will it be harmful for any part like CPU,RAM,HardDisk of my laptop?

Jan 8, 2011I've tried the bug-reporting tool in Gnome to no avail so far. This isn't a huge problem, more a cosmetic one. I'm running Squeeze beta 2, which was a fresh install. I have a Maxtor USB portable HD, which I use to back up personal data. It auto-mounts fine, as soon as I connect it. I have full read-write access from my regular user account; but when I'm finished accessing it, when I right-click and select "Safely remove" I get an error every time. The error has to do with "unable to unmount . . . ." and I wish I had the exact text but I don't. Anyway, when I open a terminal and check the mount point, the drive *has* unmounted, so I'm not worried about data loss. But why the error? BTW, the drive is formatted as one partition with NTFS.
I'm not looking for an answer so much as I am just trying to see that someone involved in trying to get Squeeze ready to release hears about this. It's no big deal, but it looks bad.

General :: How To Disable Automatic Power-off
Feb 24, 2011I need to disable the automatic power-off on shutdown so I can just withdraw the power myself. The reason for this is that the machine should power on itself when it gets power (which is accomplished by Resume on Power Failure in BIOS). I learned that I can turn off ACPI and APM by using the corresponding boot command options. Does this have any negative effect other than disabling standby etc.? Is there another easy to accomplish solution for this problem (maybe using linux from a readonly partition and make sure all programs are closed before I withdraw the power)?

Aug 24, 2010My laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 insists on automatically logging me in without asking for my password. The only thing is, I've disabled auto login and it shouldn't be doing that.
When I first boot up Ubuntu all I have to do is select my username, no password required to log in. I want the login screen to prompt me for my password for better security.
Here are the settings I already have:
System - Administration - Login screenSet to "show the screen for choosing who will log in"
System - Administration - Users and GroupsI am the only user I have an Administrator level account "Don't ask for password on login" is unchecked, i.e. it should ask for my password on login. If I create a new user with the same settings, that user gets asked for its password. But I don't.
Surely this should be enough to disable automatic login.

The usual Ubuntu admin window for this does not appear to be available. Where in the conf files this setting is, and or whether there is a GUI that controls this.

I have explicitly disabled this function in (KDE) System Settings --> Advanced --> Removable devices. It doesn't matter - as soon as a USB device is plugged in the system mounts it as root.

Jul 5, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. I've created two user accounts, one for admin purposes and the other for standard users. At boot up, I have the option to pick one of the created accounts or select "automatic login." When I select automatic login, it logs me into the admin account. I've double checked that the "don't ask for password" option is not selected on either account.
The only thing unusual that I did was select the "don't ask for password" option during the install, and then later (after the install was complete) decided that's not what I wanted and unchecked it.
I need to accomplish one of two things. Either change it so the auto login applies to the standard user account, or remove the auto login option from the login screen altogether.

May 20, 2010Is it possible to disable the icons in the bookmarks tool bar? You know what I mean: my facebook bookmark always has this little F right next to it, the ..... bookmark has the red and white ..... icon, etc.
Those are pretty nice, but they don't really work within the theme that I am using (airlines).
To relax my eyes, I usually pick less colourful themes. So it'd be cool to get rid of all those obtrusive icons.
I know that some firefox themes don't have them. But I think I like the default one, just not the icons.
I have done a search there and I didn't find any discussion on this. My apologies if this has already been discussed. In which case, an admin can always close this thread, and redirect me.

Server :: Df Reporting 100% But Du Reporting 20%?
Apr 15, 2011Today morning I logged on to one of our servers (through ssh -X) to perform a routine maintenance. When I tried to open a GUI application, it failed to connect to the X server of the workstation. Eventually I ended up issuing the command

and shockingly it showed that / is 100% used. I checked / using

du --max-depth=1 -xh /
to check the sizes of the individual directories, which showed that only about 18% of the / is used and that confused me badly. There was no quick solutions when I googled around; but luckily I found the following link which nicely explained the issue I had:

All I did was found out the services responsible for those unreleased files (using lsof +L1) and restarted them. That is it. Now df reports only 18% of the disk is used and all my X things started working again, thanks to Walker.

Feb 2, 2009I am running a sever for a local community. There is arpwatch service running and monitoring for new network cards. The problem is that each day I keep getting lots of 'flip flop' reports:

I know where they come from: clients are obtaining ip addresses by DHCP, and initially are sending DHCP requests from 0.0.0.0. I am running arpwatch with a specific option to NOT report such things, but it looks like it is ignored...

Jul 18, 2011I had Fedora 13 64 bit before which was correctly reporting memory as 4GB. After I wiped off Fedora 13 and did a fresh install of Fedora 15 32 bit, the memory is reported as 3.2 GB in the system Info and also in free -mt command code...
Where is 600MB memory gone missing? I checked the BIOS setting and it correctly says total memory is 4GB.
The hardware is exactly same and I did not change anything.

Apr 7, 2009I have a system set up with Fedora 9 - the Fed10 installer choked on an older Intel video chip. I've decided to try updating to 10 in anticipation of further upgrading to 11. Reading this forum and elsewhere convinced me to try preupgrade. I started it and saw Fed10 as an available upgrade path, selected it. At that point, the system appeared to freeze -- the progress bar got about 10% along and everything sat for 10-15minutes. I exited out of preupgrade and tried the rpm path.
That didn't fly either -- I was told that there were no packages marked for upgrade. I read more about preupgrade, including the fact that it might give the appearance of having locked up although it was still working. So I went back to preupgrade. This time, Fed10 didn't show in the selection box. It was, in fact, empty except when I checked the box for beta/unstable and could see Rawhide.
How do I get back to where I was with preupgrade so that I can finish what I started? Alternatively, how can I do a 9 to 10 upgrade from this point (preupgrade grayed out and rpm reporting no packages)? I expect to further upgrade to 11 in a couple of months, so the step to 10 is necessary. I do not have a separate /home partition and I have some very expensive (and difficult to set up) software that insists on sitting in /usr/local, so a full install, though doable, isn't something I want to undertake -- I'd much prefer to do to upgrades from 9.

Nov 7, 2010can someone please confirm or correct my understanding of automatic upgrades in F14:as far as i currently understand the automatic update mechanism in F14 it works the following way:
1.) PackageKit (packagekitd) periodically checks for updates using YUM as it's backend and displays a nice icon in the tray to inform the user when upgrades are available.
2.) PackageKit (packagekitd) only runs when a user needs it and terminates afterward. When a interactive Desktop session is running, packagekitd is always running because it's spawned by the session manager.
3.) When using a console only system (without X) or when nobody is logging in on the local graphical console for a longer time i need yum-checkupdates for configuring automatic upgrades (same as done per default in CentOS).
