Fedora :: System Crash Then Read Error At Boot?
Feb 23, 2011
I tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.
Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).
It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".
I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.
I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.
It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).
It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.
what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.

I have a custom compiled kernel which seems to work OK. However, during boot, I get:
Apr 27 21:16:14 poni kernel: eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95784M) rev 5784100] (PCI Express) MAC address 00:21:70:90:2d:6c
Apr 27 21:16:14 poni kernel: eth0: attached PHY is 5784 (10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet)
[code]....
System continues to boot OK and everything seems to work fine as I expect. I am not sure what the above causes. It looks related to USB, but I am not sure. lsusb gives:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I changed my motherboard battery last night, and now get "Read Error" on booting to Ubuntu, on dual boot system. This is the most frustrating thing in an otherwise great operating system. It is the second time I have encountered this issue (last time was a change of power supply). I fixed it last time after three days of re-loading Grub2 and playing around Grub 2 updates, etc. Fixed it eventually, but as usual, no idea of what eventuality fixed it. I think I found a web page buried deep in the 'net, which talked about device.map. Do you think I can find it again - not yet - day 2 searching for the answer... This is what the grub script tells us:

I am on debian jessie. I ran "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" and midway through the upgrade my computer suddenly rebooted.
I wasn't paying close attention to the upgrade process so I didnt see if there was any error messages right before the reboot. The laptop was plugged in, fully charged and I've never had issues with overheating.
When I boot now I get to a shell with a message that says:
Code: Select allWelcome to emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
If I try "systemctl default" there's a message that simply says "Hangup", nothing else happens.
Looking through "journalctl -xb" I see this:
Code: Select allFailed to insert module 'autofs4'
Failed to open /dev/autofs: No such file or directory
Failed to initialize automounter: No such file or directory
Failed to set up automount Arbitrary Executable File Formats File System Automount Point.
Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
If I retry "apt-get upgrade" it says:
Code: Select alldpkg was interrupted, you must maually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem
If I run "dpkg --configure -a" stops at the package cups-browsed with message saying "Hangup"
Output of a few commands I saw in another forum thread:
$ lsmod
Code: Select allModule Size Used by
ext4 473802 1
crc16 12343 1 ext4
mbcache 17171 1 ext4
jbd2 82522 1 ext4
[Code] ....
Is this fixable without jumping through too many hoops or should I just reinstall the system? I need the computer for work so Im not gonna spend days trying to fix it without reinstalling.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS however when I attempt to boot the HDD I get the following error message
Read Error
Thats it nothing else, I am able to boot a USB installed version of Ubuntu 10.04LTS no proble. I can boot a Live CD of the same version no problem but when I installed it to the hard drive it just seems to fall over. I've tried adjusting the boot order, putting the HDD first and removing everything else but no joy. Im a linux n00b so no idea what to do next apart from go back to windows.

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

I've rebooted my system like 30 minutes ago...and all the sudden I get the error related the that program in ubuntu 8.04 that checks the disk after reboot for bugs an stuff like that. The error is caused by "read only system" mode. It can't write anything onto the HDD. I can't even change /etc/fstab file with nano or anything else. Btw is server edition. I mean when I want to save the file (fstab) same damn thing read-only system how can I change that?

I regularly rsync directories to an external usb drive. Recently I've started getting errors which look:
blah blah:Read-only file system (30)
The external usb drive has two partitions (ext3 and fat32) and I rsync to the ext3 one. The rsync command is
rsync -ahi --delete /home/mike/some_dir /media/usb_drive
People have reported this error with faulty usb cables but everything was working fine until recently so it seem unlikely a usb cable would suddenly wear off.

I'm having real issues installing 10.04 to an SSD - I had one SSD fail, and have replaced it with a brand new one, but the 10.04 installer fails at beginning to write files to the disk with this error:
[Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'.
Curiously:
* Windows XP will install to this SSD with no issues
* I can install 10.04 to a standard HDD with no errors.
What is happening that is stopping me from installing 10.04 to this drive? I am fairly sure that there is no issue with the SSD (I have two brand new, identical OCZ Vertex II 60gb drives which both encounter this error.)
I have tried partitioning the drive using gparted on another machine, leaving 5mb free at the start of the drive, and having a single partition for /, and a 1gb swap partition. "Round to cylinders" was unchecked. The partitioning was successful, and the drives can be mounted on my other machine, but the 10.04 installer encounters the same error.

I have a computer in the university and I have root access to this pc. Iam trying to install Cblas library on it. But it gives me a starnge error /usr/local/atlas is read only file system. I tried doing mount -l and it gave me that appserver1:/export/d1/Linux/doe on /usr/local type nfs4 (ro,sec=.......) I think what it means that the main server directory is mounted to /usr/local and it is read only. So, how can I fix this problem to separate the two and make my /usr/local separate

I just upgraded to F15 and it went well. But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.

I am working along, and screen goes black, or just freezes... the lights on my laptop start blinking and becomes everything becomes unresponsive.
I have noticed it is usually when I am Using Firefox and Flash content. I have also noticed it happens when using Deluge, but it usually takes 5 minutes to kick in.
I am using firefox at the moment, but I am sure if I load up a ..... video, it will lock up on me again.

I have been trying to get my Toshiba L300 to dual-boot Fedora 12 and Vista, which it came pre-installed with. I shrunk my existing partitions to create some unallocated space, then installed F12 on it from the 64bit Live CD. Everything seemed to go fine, and I was able to boot into Fedora as normal. However if I tried to boot into Vista, I would get a message to the effect of:BOOTMGR is missingRather annoyed but undeterred, I decided to cross that bridge when I came to it, and went back into Fedora to start configuring it properly. I installed the latest version of WINE, and the mp3 support, then shut down. When I tried to boot into Fedora later on, everything started as normal, then it hung on a black terminal style screen, where I can type and press return for a new line, but nothing actually happens. Pressing ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer however.
To get out of this no-working-OS-limbo, I had to break out my Vista recovery console and run fixboot. This has got rid of the bootloader and now Windows starts up fine, but obviously this does not solve the problem of not being able to boot Vista while Fedora is also installed, and not being able to run Fedora presumably (but not for certain) after I have installed WINE

I am using Gentoo Linux and for a while now, the root file system is mounted read-only on booting. For obvious reasons, this is quite annoying as most services do not start up correctly (I do not use a separate file system for /var). After the system is up, I have to log in, remount the root file system read-write, fix /etc/mtab, mount all other file systems in from /etc/fstab and then start up all the missing daemons. I know that there are ways to make a system run properly with a read-only file system, but I would rather restore the old behaviour of a writable root file system.
The strange thing is that after running mount / -o remount,rw, the file system is mounted in writable mode without any errors. I suspected some problem with fsck, but now I have disabled automatic file system checks on the partition (tune2fs -c0 -i0).When I run dmesg, only these lines mention the partition at all, although I am not sure if not something gets lost because /var/log is not writable:
EXT3-fs (sda5): mounted filesystem with writeback data mode</code>
EXT3-fs (sda5): using internal journal
The line in /etc/fstab looks like this:

I run ubuntu, 2 partion, one primary for / , one for /home and ofc swap. When I run the Livecd, at the partition step I do:
-Custom
-Select my / partition to install
-When I select next I get the error "blah blah, must be probably a bug...." and system crashes.
After system crach I can't boot into Ubuntu or anything, it gets me on the "error 11 ( think is 11 ) grub> " screen. Also, I think its something with my nouveau drivers, I think i get an error when boots the LiveCD something like "fudc...". It happens really fast and I can't read it properly.I did this procedure twice to write the errors, but it happens too fast to check them out. Also, is there a way to prepare the system before installing the Fedora, to avoid these errors?

I've just installed F15 over the weekend, and since then I've been having stability issues - primarily it seems to be related to gnome 3 (I've used fedora since its early days, and have never had such stability issues in the prior versions). Basically, when I use gnome-tweak-tool to make a modification, the system crashes; and I have to completely shut off the unit (unplug it) for it to even boot up properly. Today, I tried to change one of the options from its default, and now the very top (black bar) won't show.
I'm in the "File Manager" mode and can see the "Computer", "home" and "Trash" icons. I can move them about; and click on any of them to open. But once they're open nothing else works (clicking on any of the directories, etc, has no effect). I can ctl-alt-F2; but that's the extent. I deleted the .gconf and .gconfd directories (suggested in a different thread on a similar issue), but that didn't change anything. How do I bring back the default gnome 3 bar at the top?
I rebuilt my user account from scratch (that was the fastest approach for me). Nevertheless, gnome-tweak-tool does crash (for example, each time I turn on "File Manager"). This is clearly a bug. I'm using nvidia GTX 480; the problem might somehow be related to the card/driver. I definitely spoke too early I logged out of my account; logged back in, and the top bar is gone again and I'm left with having to deal with this again.

I have multi-version Kernels on a Dual Boot WinXP / openSUSE 11,3 box. It's been a LONG time since I needed to boot to Win XP and now that I find that I can't get to it, I can not say for sure what I did to break it. Looking back, I suspect that the method I used for the recent removal of one of the Kernel versions may have been innappropiate. Rather than unchecking in versions/package groups I may have just removed the unwanted kernel in the package list. Not sure. I've tried dinking around with menu.lst and Yast Boot Loader to no success. I get errors depending on what I messed with. Didn't try to reinstall grub until I checked here for help with a fix.
Here's some info:

While it does mention nouveau, and I do use Nvidia graphics (PCIe GT 240) I believe the cause may be something else. Googling around leads me to a couple of forum threads that seem to relate to the core series of Intel processors, but I'm at a loss. I've also searched this forum however the search seems to either bring up every result under the sun and non seem to apply or no results at all. I know the card's supported as Ubuntu works flawlessly. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode, however the exact same thing happens.
I doubt using a USB stick in this manor would cause this problem, but if you suggest it i'll install from physical media.
I would post logs, however the shell it drops to seems to be severly limited (lacking reboot, even).

This morning I started my PBell desktop (dual booting Fedora/Vista) and Fedora opened fine. I started making entries in a text file with gEdit & when I saved it took a long while to complete the save (I had only entered a few lines of text).I then created a new folder in my home folder & tried to move other folders in to the new one but suddenly all the folders disappeared and the computer hung/froze. I tried a restart but again this did not complete fully (the cursor turned into a 'brick' & the progress bar hung).
I had to switch off & when I restarted I got Disk Read error. I tried switching off/on again and got Grub cursor. I switched off & on again & this time was told to put system disc in (I do not have a disc as I installed Fedora with USB install). So I switched off and left the computer for 15 minutes & when I switched on again it started Fedora normally.I experienced similar crashes with Ubuntu10.04 dual booting with Vista & this was the reason I decided to leave Ubuntu & install Fedora. When I used Ubuntu I did a DejaDup backup & I tried to use this with the DejaDup in Fedora to restore my data to Fedora but it didn't work.It appears there is some issue with my computer running Linux (dual boot Vista)-either Fedora or Ubuntu. How do I find out what the problem with my computer is and how do I proceed now?
