Fedora :: Sound System In F12 Disappointing

Feb 8, 2010

I have recently updated my Laptop from Fedora (core) 5 to Fedora 12 hoping to have a much better operating system in the sense that things work more easily, are more stable, are easy to maintain etc. In nearly every respect I am positively surprised by Fedora 12 (ease of installation, hardware managing, stability, power operations, ...), but I am disappointed how the sound is handled in Fedora 12.
Although some things are easier now (you can just plug in headsets without rebooting the laptop), other things are just handled more or less as it has been in the old version 5 of Fedora:

- When using skype, I sometimes have sound problems (don't hear anything). I need to see what program uses the sound port by scanning through the output of lsof /dev/snd or so, with the need to e.g. shut down firefox, so skype can take over the port.
- This lists also pulseaudio, no idea what this is. Can I kill it? What is this used for?
- Also sometimes, the input source control (in the mixer) is reset to zero by some program, and I have to open the mixer and set it back to maximum
- And when using mplayer, it always adjusts the output source control to maximum, although I have reduced it before.

I really hoped that the sound managing would be much better in Fedora 12, but it is not. Maybe there are ways to improve the sound managing? Or a code that can be updated? Or a different code that just lets you use all the sound-producing applications like in Windows, where you can adjust the volume of multiple sound-producing applications (firefox, skype, mplayer, ...)?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: New SSD Disappointing Boot Time

Jun 4, 2011

I've just replaced my SATA boot drive /dev/sda1 with a 65Gb SSD (Kingston SSDnow V-100, latest version) but I find the much-hyped speed advantage almost negligible. I used to have boot times in openSUSE (fresh install of 11.4, measuring from GRUB menu to startup guitar chord) of around 50 seconds, and the SSD drive is only a little faster at about 40 seconds. I was expecting something more like half the previous boot speed.Haven't done any tinkering yet except for the noatime setting in /etc/fstab.

Fedora Hardware :: How To Disable System Sound FC15

Jul 7, 2011

I tried all possible solutions for disabling the worst sound ever (BEEP!). I have this problem only when the login screen appears and after I clicked on my account's icon to write my password and login. I tried to disable it (alert sound) from 'sound' in 'system settings' by muting it or even changing the sound to the other options and nothing happened. Then I search for this problem and found a solution that remove the module by executing

Code:
rmmod pcspkr

but I get an error because Module pcspkr does not exist in /proc/modules
so I checked in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and it has the following line under sound drivers

Code:
# sound drivers
blacklist snd-pcsp

As I understand, that is the new name of pcspkr and it is blacklisted - how is it still able to play this terrible BBBEEEEPPPP sound at login?

Fedora Hardware :: Xfi Titanium Sound - Use 5.1 Analog Audio System

Jan 26, 2011

I installed a fresh copy of Fedora 14 a few days ago. The default drivers for this device worked OK but I read on some forums that OSSV4 had improved performance/capabilities. I came across this thread on the forums which I followed. (incloded removing pulse audio) Since then I have visited almost every forum/site I can find to try to resolve my issue. I have reinstalled pulseaudio and editied almost all of the conf files I could find relating to the xfi cards.

I was worried that I may have changed a config file that I shouldn't have. I removed all of the pulse audio apps using: su -c "yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio padevchooser pavumeter paprefs pavucontrol" and also removed the config backups so that on a new install they would be replaced. I will post any information needed to resolve this issue, my goal is preferably not to use pulseaudio and successfully be able to use my 5.1 analog audio system I am sure that the system is able to see the card, but loading the driver / sound utilities is not working.

System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2

Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

I'm using a HP 7100 laptop and have tried installing the latest versions of Suse, Mandriva, as well as Slakware and have repeatedly been faced with two problems: .1. No Sound: Research via the web suggests that the lack of sound MAY BE due to the particular HP laptop model but there is a doubt here. Sound does work with the Winow$ 7 software but it does not work with any of the above noted Linux softwares. Are any of you familiar with this? .2. KPPP: Are any of you using KPPP with the latest version of Fedora, using KDE4? If so, how did you get it to work?

Fedora Hardware :: F13 - No Sound From VIA VTS1708S Sound Card?

Jun 12, 2010

My PC has the ASUS P7H55-M SI motherboard with the audio chipset VIA VT1708S. Under Fedora 13 (64-bit) I have no sound although the audio chipset seems to be properly recognised and supported by the OS.

I used the alsmixer application and I set the volume for all channels, including PCM to their maximum value but still I get no sound. When the OS boots I hear a "click" sound coming from the audio chipset when it is initialised by the kernel but then the sound stops and I hear nothing.

Note that I do not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 but I have the same issue with openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7. My guess is that F13 and openSUSE 11.3 having newer kernel/alsa software versions exhibit this problem due to some bug introduced to the code.

Here is some extra information:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound At All On System / What To Get That?

Jan 21, 2010

I just recently installed ubuntu (two days ago). Everything is working as expected, except the sound. For one reason or another I cant get any sound at all. So I searched around a little on my computer and noticed that sound devices were not enabled for this computer. So I turned it on and still got nothing. Then I went through the comprehensive guide to fix sound and still nothing. Although Alsa did not have my exact audio sound card (HDA ATI and Intel) it did have the generic one, so I tried that. Nothing. I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to get my sound cards to work. Im posting them up here.

Ubuntu :: Sound System Not Responding After Updating

Sep 17, 2010

I just updated ubuntu a few minutes ago, and now my sound system is not responding. I checked up updates, installed the updates then it told me I had to restart (no big deal, that happens with every other update), so I did. And when my computer booted back up, I noticed my volume icon looked different, so I went to un-mute it, and there was no option to un-mute it. I clicked sound preferences to try and get an idea of what the problem was, and a window appeared that said "waiting for sound system to respond". I've been waiting quite a while now, and it has not responded. My sound was working fine before I updated. Here is a screen shot of the window that appears when I try to enter sound preferences:

Software :: How To Set And Store Sound System Settings?

The C200 webcam is connected but not use for sound. When she starts the computer, she is not able to use Skype: the sound is not captured. She is barely able to find KMixer, but when she does, there are 2 input controls shown:- Internal Audio Analog Stereo- Logitech C200 Analog MonoNothing more, no controls, no flags, no way to add any more controls, not even through settings or whatever.

<rant mode>What else did you expect in KDE4. This desktop is famous for oversimplification of settings, making sure that whatever you want o change is not possible thru the GUI. But gets controlled thru KDE anyway in the way you didn't intend.</rant mode>Anyway, when I open alsamixer, not less than 6 capture controls are available:

- Front Mic Boost (level)
- Mic Boost (level)
- Capture (flag + level)
