Software :: How To Set And Store Sound System Settings?
Apr 9, 2011
This computer runs KDE4.4, Debian Squeeze, used by my wife who is a complete computer illiterate. Sound is provided by a HDA Intel card with controller with Realtec ALC888 chip. The C200 webcam is connected but not use for sound. When she starts the computer, she is not able to use Skype: the sound is not captured. She is barely able to find KMixer, but when she does, there are 2 input controls shown:- Internal Audio Analog Stereo- Logitech C200 Analog MonoNothing more, no controls, no flags, no way to add any more controls, not even through settings or whatever.
<rant mode>What else did you expect in KDE4. This desktop is famous for oversimplification of settings, making sure that whatever you want o change is not possible thru the GUI. But gets controlled thru KDE anyway in the way you didn't intend.</rant mode>Anyway, when I open alsamixer, not less than 6 capture controls are available:
- Front Mic Boost (level)
- Mic Boost (level)
- Capture (flag + level)

Did you play too much with compiz and after-a-while you realize that certain functions are not working anymore?
Well, just follow the steps below:
Quote:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then,
Quote:
Restart your PC / lappy

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

I have no sound, is it possible to restore the default sound drivers/settings in 10.04?It was work well before except for one issue, I couldn't get mic in for Rosetta Stone using wine. I have followed so many howto's to try and get Rosetta Stone working and then my sound working again.I think this is my main problem I upgraded alsa to "alsa-driver-1.0.23". I could easily be wrong about that assumption though.I have a Dell XPS M1210Ubuntu 10.04 64bitI think this is my sound card, "lspci -v | less"00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)Subsystem: Dell Device 01d7Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11 Memory at efffc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel modules: snd-hda-intelBut I don't think it is being recognized,

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

I have my company's CA root.crt certificate and I would like to import into openSUSE 11.2 so every application could trust this authority. Is there any instruction for this procedure?
You know, something like you can do in Windows: just click certificate and there is a button "Install certificate"
Where is system certificate store in openSUSE?

I have got 2 disks available and would like to create 3 main partitions: one for file system (maverick), one for home folder and one for linux swap.
I read many howtos and now I feel more confused!
I would like to obtain the more efficient solution in order of speed (performance): as far as I can understand (not so far) .. it seems that the best choice is:
Quote:
disk 1: [beginning] ubuntu | home | others [end]
disk 2: [beginning] swap | others [end]
My situation now is, according to guides I read before:
Quote:
disk 1: [beginning] ubuntu | others [end]
disk 2: [beginning] home | others | swap [end]
now .. before moving all my staff ..
I thought to have understood that ubuntu use swap only for hibernation / suspend activities, and therefore it's recommendable to put the system at the beginning of one disk, and the home folder at the beginning of a second disk in order to have quickly two disk reading / writing on the right position without moving too much and spend time.
But now I'm confused because it seems that ubuntu DOES use swap for normal activity (and so it's better to put it) at the beginning of a second disk.
I always saw my swap next to zero during my activities .. is ubuntu using swap like windows with pagefile.sys?

10.10 x64. This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences. Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.
To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script. My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?

I am running a dedicated audio PC (Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel Atom 525) with a Juli@ sound card. I had everything set up and working great up until I accidentally pulled the sound card out of its slot while the computer was running. After that, the computer no longer recognized the Juli@ card.
I managed to fix the basic problem by following the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide- deleting and reinstalling ALSA is what did the trick. The only problem remaining is that the computer no longer remembers the output settings in the Sound Preferences dialog. The setting stays for as long as the computer is on, but as soon as I turn it off and reboot it, the sound output setting reverts back to the internal audio. I tried 'sudo alsactl store 1', but this does not work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Using Dell Inspiron 1564. In windows 7 and other distros like ubuntu, openSUSE sound was perfect. However the sound here is pretty low. Not sure if there's some configuration I am missing. I ran alsaconf, maxed out the bars in alsamixer and did a alsactl store. But the sound is still low.
Code:

I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)

New Ubuntu installation with a big problem: no sound.
OS: Ubuntu 10.4.1
Hardware: HP Pavilion Elite e9150t (64 bit)
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

My system (Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome Desktop) keeps 'forgetting' my sound settings. every day I have to go into sound preferences and select a different hardware device setting and then change it back to the right one in order for it to work. For instance my sound goes out of my onboard intel based sound via optical to my amp and so the hardware setting for this is IEC598 output + analog stereo input But everytime I boot their is no sound (and hence no light coming through the optical cable) so then I'll change it to Analog surround and the light comes out so then I can change it back to the 1st setting and it works again. Hope that makes sense, I have had this problem and also my video settings have been 'forgotten' and samba also won't work ever since about 4 days ago when the system updated, everything was working fine before that (i have run update manager since and everything is up to date)

Since I installed the system-wide equalizer I've been having some problems with my sound system. The problem is it has changed some system settings (visible in gconf) and after I uninstall it, I can't change any sound settings, except the volume in a given application, but the system-wide volume doesn't work, even the tray icon shows three dashes next to the little speaker and the sound settings won't start. I'd like to revert the settings to the original after removing the equalizer, as at this moment I can't change any settings even with the equalizer enabled. Is there any way to reset the sound settings
(I suppose it must be in gconf, but I don't know what the values should be. Currently the musicaudiosink settings are: audioresample ! audioamplify amplification=0 ! pulsesinkv)
Those are the settings that definitely changed after installing the equalizer, but they obviously won't change back after uninstalling it.

I have a Debian Sid x86_64 installation on my laptop. I used to use skype a lot when I was on ArchLinux in chrooted 32bit environment. Nowdays, I tried running skype straight on the 64bit environment, when I finally got it running, I couldn't get into sound settings, it froze right when I clicked the Sound options... So I decided to make the 32 bit environment, so I used debootstrap and schroot and now I have fully functional 32bit chrooted system. It does the same thing all over again! it drives me crazy... I should probably tell you, I use pulseaudio. This makes it a little hard to like the distro for me... I used to be an ArchLinux user for quite few years, but I didn't want to solve so many things every day, so I went with debian

Not sure if others have noticed this. When I go into sound settings, click the output tab, select the sound device I want to edit and change the bass levels etc, close the window and go back in all the settings are reset to default and no changes are saved.
If I leave the window open and make the changes they are reflected in VLC for example, but if I close the window it again resets to defaults and my Bass is back at Maximum....
Is this a BUG I should report or is there something I can download to get this configured elsewhere or to fix this issue? I seem to recall something similar in Fedora 14 that was fixed, but I cant remember how I did it now
